Well, I'm only half-way through, slow reading for even me, and I have to say I'm not loving it like I did The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. If I had to rate it right now, it would probably be a 3. It does seem a bit better right now, so maybe the rating will improve. I see you gave it a 4. Any thoughts on it?

Kathy, I'm sorry to hear this O'Farrell book is not grabbing you. Is it still a three for you?

message 654: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked it, Lee. I would still say that The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox was my favorite, but this was a good one in my opinion.

The memory loss stuff is fascinating to me, Barb. I felt pretty grabbed by that whole thing. I don't want to add any type of spoiler though, so I won't comment on my feelings about how it wrapped up.

Oh my, Lee and Christine, no longer a three! The last half, probably a little before that, took off like a rocket. I'm still having trouble deciding on a rating, though. This book made me mad, glad, happy, sad, frustrated, anxious, and I'm sure more. Any book that does that is a great read, right? But, in view of the fact that the first third or so of the book went rather slow may keep it from getting a five. And, of course, I'm still mad at the author some of the events of the novel. LOL!

Oh, Lee, be sure and have a hankie handy!

Amelia, I read quite a bit of speculative fiction but have never tried any of L.E. Modesitt's work. Does he write traditional fantasy? Are you enjoying the series?

I am starting Girl in Translation Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok , which was my UPS attack book. It looks like it may be a comfort read. I'll let you know.

Gaijinmama | 18 comments I'm two-thirds of the way through my 5th re-read ofOutlander and as always, I'm loving it. It's amazing how fast 850 pages can go when you're enjoying it this much!
And BTW Katri, I think it's so cool that you can speak six languages. I only speak English (being American and all...) and Japanese since I've lived here for twenty years and my husband and kids are Japanese citizens. And I still have Japanese people complimenting me on being able to write my own address (rolls eyes)! I guess some people just don't make the effort to learn, even if they live in a foreign country.

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "On Mystic Lake" by Kristin Hannah last night. I am now going to read "Between Sisters" by Kristin Hannah.

message 670: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am reading Mornings in Jenin and it is getting me mader and mader. Very one-sided and unbelievable. Everything that has ever happened to the Palestinians has happened in this one family. The last straw is that the son is now working directly under Yasser Arafat....... There is also a kidnapping that is totally unbelievable. I am trying very hard to like this book. I am so far not suceeding.

That does not sound promising; I hate one-sided books, especially when they deal with controversial problems and situations.

Mary | 245 comments I am reading After You'd Gone, Maggie O'Farrell's debut novel.

message 673: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Thursday Next #3. I think I will call it quits here. Amusing, but repetitive and too long.

Will now read Absent in the Spring by Mary Westmacott, aka Agatha Christie. I learned that Christie wrote under a pseudonym very recently. I hope it's good.

I read by Westmacott years ago and enjoyed it. Totally different from her mysteries.

Is that happening again? There was a problem with it all of yesterday. I would suggest letting GR staff know. Then, empty your cache and restart your browser. That's what I had to do yesterday, I guess their system is still not fixed.

message 678: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I finished The Unit last night. Not a comfort read but I loved it, even though it devastated me.

I think I'm starting Inside the Gas Chambers: Eight Months in the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz today.

But a friend of mine has a copy of This World We Live In which my library STILL DOESN'T HAVE and I'll get it when she's done. Whatever I'm reading, I'll probably drop and read it. I have a few books out from the library or will during the week, and a bunch of picture books too. But I have a busy weekend (at home) so not as much time to read as I'd hoped.

message 685: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd like to see how many stars you give it.

I try to write a line or two when I finish a book, but I don't read as many books as you do. :)

I know I should write more reviews but sometimes I'm just itching to get to the next one. I guess a line or two is better than nothing.

That's what I think, too. I like to go back and read why I gave a book the rating I did.

It's starting off really good. I'm anxious to get back to it.

message 695: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm putting down another currently reading book because a friend brought over her library copy (library in the county next to mine - I'm going to get one of their library cards asap!) of This World We Live In so I'm starting that. I loved the first two books in the trilogy but many readers don't seem to like this one, so I'm hoping I'll like it but I'll have to see.

Interesting so far. I was almost expecting Miss Marple to show up in the first few pages.

Absent in the Spring is the description, using flashbacks, of a woman who is slowly coming to grips with herself and how she controlled her family and her inability to deal with reality. Very well done, and not what I expected at all.

message 698: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am reading The French Blue which is about the discovery by Tavernier of the Hope Diamond, originally called the French Blue. He traveled to Persia and India six times during the 1600s. He sold it to the Sun King, France's Louis XIV. The book is about his voyages, his love affairs and more. The first chapter draws you in immediately - marvelous storytelling! Wonderful map with all the old names of cities. Thoroughly enjoying myself!

message 699: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds really good Chrissie. I think I'll have to read it as well!

Chrissie Hayes, I actually recieved it from the author. I am really, really lucky. Check out Lauren's review.
