Do you know which one(s) you're interested in, Chrissie?
I ned to get to bed. It's almost 3. Neighbors noisy starting at 10:05 (noise ordinances start at 10, ha!) and though they're still moving around up there maybe it's gotten quiet enough to get some sleep. Need to call the mediation people asap, or???

I think that there are some books that just are meant to be read in small dosages, and I think that can be especially true with heavy, detailed biographies. I was forced to do this when I was reading Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings (I did give it five stars, but it took me almost a year to read the book, and because I had finished the book just before I joined GR, I have never actually written a review because to actually write a review, I would have to reread the book, and it would likely take months again, and L.M. Montgomery's life story is heavy reading indeed). And I am also going to be reading The Complete Journals of L.M. Montgomery: The PEI Years, 1889-1900 in small, easy to take sections (and for the same reasons as stated above).

You need to contact your landlord or maybe even the police. Also, maybe consider wearing earplugs in bed (I know it's kind of gross, but maybe that would help, and maybe it would even help with finding some quiet time for reading).

Gundula, I think Lisa's landlord is pretty useless :(

Good luck with this, Lisa. And it would not hurt to keep calling the landlord every time they are being noisy (if he gets enough complaints and constantly, he might actually do something more). And if they are preventing you from sleeping and reading, then I think you should consider calling the police (because you are being prevented from enjoying your apartment, from being able to sleep etc. etc.).

I think so too, and I also think that Lisa just needs to contact the landlord again and again if the noise issues don't get better.

What a bummer, but then, she might think of calling the police (of course, she also does not want herself to be labeled a problem tenant, that could also cause problems).

Good luck Lisa. My son has had that same type of trouble where he lives. He consistantly complained to the Landlord and even called the police. Note: Landlords do NOT like the police involved. After enough complaints, it got better. It's so sad people have to bee so inconsiderate of others. Good luck.

Next week I'm going to contact my neighborhood's neighbor mediation group. Every neighborhood in my city has one. I've never used them before but I want to get the process started, and, if I do end up calling the police, I can tell them I'm trying that route.
The biggest problem is that since I've talked to them twice and the landlord's office has talked to them once, they've quieted down a bit, and they're maybe not quite noisy enough for me to call the police (they were before!!!) but they're still too noisy for me to sleep, or read. Grrrrr.

Here's a picture from the play: Carney, Thaxter, Ashley and an actress names June Harding who, as far as I've been able to discover, hasnt done anything else...

Looks like she did flower there for awhile. Wonder what she's up to now.

Starting: The Dark Side of Love

Thanks, Chrissie. I hope so, too. I have a lousy track record with memoirs. :(

Diane, Fanny Stevenson: A Romance of Destiny is very good, but not as good as the author's Between Love and Honor. You will have fun irregardless of which book you choose.

Looking at the reviews too - very high marks! And I know NOTHING about her or RLS.

Now, I'm about to start

I must immediately read another by this author so I have chosen Zoli

I just started

How interesting - I know the song "Long Lankin", and never thought to see if anyone wrote about it. I'll have to check it out.

Ditto!!! :-)

But if I was not adding books, I would also be unhappy, sigh!!

Oh, I'm just joking. I do like it. It does get overwhelming though. So many books!!!

I know of what you post, lol.

I will start Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, about children growing up in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district of the US. It is non-fiction. When I read two books at the same time they have to be completely different. This is an audiobook.
And I just finished: Zoli

I had trouble with this in the beginning - due to my own inability to not concentrate on historical details and just let myself listen and enjoy the story. I have given it four stars. I gave Colum McCann's Let the Great World Spin five stars. This author can really, really write, but you cannot demand that you understand everything as you read. By the end you do understand.

Gundula, I thought it was terrible. I gave up after more than 200 pages. Shouldn't 200+ pages be enough to engage one in a book?
I hope I will like Storming Heaven. I really loved the author's Saints and Villains. Really, do read this if it might interest you!
