I've read The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel, Jane, and enjoyed it, too.

I so love The Hound of the Baskervilles, Gundula! I try to read it every few years. I'm getting a warm, fuzzy feeling just thinking about it.

A warm, fuzzy feeling about a devilish hound? More like deliciously creepy goosebumps, I hope.

The whole foggy moor, massive manors with the fireplaces lit, English people popping in and out of the manor and Sherlock Holmes and Watson sleuthing away--all give me the warm fuzzies. The hound gives me a deliciously creepy goosebump feel.

LOL! Me, too, Lauren.

Loved the Hobbit, Simran! I don't understand why I haven't gone on and read the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I can see that, definitely.

I'm also reading Susanna Kearsley's The Winter Sea. I like it well enough, although I don't know enough about history of Jacobite rebellion in Scotland to be completely blown away.

Kim, I've been interested in the Jacobite history ever since reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. The history of the period where the Stuart kings were exiled to France with the Scottish (and Irish) connection really appeals to me.

Yes, we were going to do that, weren't we? Gee, I'm not sure when a good time would be. I just received my birthday box of books from Amazon, so I will be busy for a bit with those books. I do want to read LOTR though.
The buddy-read of The Fellowship of the Ring begins March 1. I'll post the discussion thread next week. :)

Not my kind of read, but it's always exciting to get a signed copy. The limited edition cover is a bonus! Enjoy!

I'm going to start the BBC dramatization of The Lord of the Rings which stars Ian Holm as Frodo. I'm listening to this for the buddy read.

Too bad; this one's on my tbr list. Well, I have plenty to read as it is....

However, the plot itself it pretty well done, although I hate one of the "love interests", he's pretty horrible to almost everyone, including the lead, but he's supposed to be a love interest?
Hard to get excited about the love interest if you can't stand him!
A bad reading can put you off a book, so I'll keep it on the ever-growing list.

I read that ages ago and it brings back fond memories. You MUST be enjoying it! Right?

So far im enjoying it but I almost like the movie a little bit more. But I haven't seen the movie in a long time, so I plan on watching it after I finish the book. It was a book club pick for my live book club.

A book and a movie can both be good in their own way. They never give you the same impression and I wonder if it isn't the first that is always the best.
I s something wrong with GR? I am getting no emailed messages or the list with books my friends are reading!
I am struggling to find time to "read" two books, one an audiobook and another paper. The first is Ivan Doig's Dancing at the Rascal Fair and the latter Fanny Stevenson: A Romance of Destiny. They both take place at the end of the 1800s. The first has words that are so lovely. A thoroughly comforting read. The second is astounding. This woman is utterly amazing. The things she does!!! She is not yet married to Robert Louis Stevenson. She is amazing in her own right. A miner's wife, a feminist, a traveler, a student of art. In 1875 she traveled alone with her three children to Antwerp, Belgium. She was penniless, but FED UP with her philandering husband. Twice she traveled from Indiana to NY to the Panama isthmus to California to meet her husband.....who missed her. Then on to Nevada - alone. No easy trip in the 1860s. So am I exaggerating when I say she is amazing?!
I have a hard time choosing which book to read. I really do not like reading two at the same time. I do not confuse them; listening and reading are two completely different experiences, but I feel split.

Chrissie, there is something wrong with the update emails. Most of us have not had any for more than two weeks. Staff is working on the issue, but it will supposedly take some time to fix. And the whole site will supposedly be down for major maintenance Wednesday evening around 6:00 p.m. pacific time (I think that will be around 3:00 a.m. in your neck of the woods).
The more I read about Fanny Stevenson (from you, thank you), the more I want to read that book (she truly does sound amazing). Thanks for mentioning her to me :-) (and a big hug from me, of course)

I hope you are sleeping then as well :-) (and I really do miss the updates).

So do I. I would rather wait if that meant a fix that actually worked.

Ha! Well, that comes off my list for sure. I just got her newest one as a gift and I am not sure if I am wanting to read it or not.

It is good, but not marvelous. She has lots of marital problems. When she finally marries Robert Louis Stevenson the problems are not over. I don't think I really like her so much, but she had a very tough life. Now she is married to Robert Louis Stevenson, but he is SO sick. It is quite a sad situation, but I do not just have pity because the people act so selfishly. Messy, messy relationships. It is made clear from the beginning of the book that she will be married three times. I have read about 2/3 of the book.
She lived in Paris when Impressionism was beginning. That was interesting. In addition her relationship with her own daughter id NOT ordinary. So there are many issues to consider.
