I have liked a few from both, but this was just a poorly executed book, in addition to failing as a mystery and as fanfic.

I'll check my list, and your shelves, too. But, try to get them from the library, because it's always a game of chance how different people will react to fanfic.
Jeannette wrote: "I'll check my list, and your shelves, too. But, try to get them from the library, because it's always a game of chance how different people will react to fanfic."Thanks, and there's no rush, I have a lot of "to-read" books at the moment.
Jeannette wrote: "No, don't bother. It was awful, seriously. I finished it last night and will post a review today. Kim already posted a 1-star review, and I will be doing the same."Jeanette,
I totally concur. Death Comes to Pemberley was a complete disappointment. I was so excited and now disenchanted. I loved P D James. The syntax of the narration was close to Austin's but the subtleness of her humor was lost. Many of the characters from P&P appear but there seemed something lacked in characterization. The twist at the end was stupid.
Mary, the whole book was quite a mess. None of us can figure out just what happened here.
Something good from the experience. I borrowed it from the library.

I chat with a several people on goodreads who are in the same boat with you. At least you're on holiday right now! :) I'm just heading upstairs to read, and hopefully sleep until 7.
Have a good day!

Putting behind me the horror which was Death Comes to Pemberley, I have just finished Geraldine Brooks's March and started All That I Am by Anna Funder. I'm also starting the January buddy read a little early and listening to an audiobook of The Count of Monte Cristo, although I don't think I'll be doing much listening while I'm on holidays.
Kim, did you download The Count of Monte Cristo or purchase physical CDs? If you downloaded, do you recall from where? Cost? Thanks!
Kim wrote: "Putting behind me the horror which was Death Comes to Pemberley, I have just finished Geraldine Brooks's March and started All That I Am..."I keep hearing so many mixed reviews..looks like this will be a library book if I so decide to read it.

Thanks!"Krista, I downloaded it from a free French language audiobook site, http://www.audiocite.net, because I want to listen to it in French. In English it is available from audible.com at various prices depending on the edition and whether or not you're an Audible subscriber. It is also available for free from librivox.org. It is VERY long and took forever to download, so keep that in mind if you decide to get it in audiobook format!

I had this one as required reading in college, Simran.

It's a little book so I may be able to finish it today if I find some quiet time. I was attracted to it when I saw that it won the Man Booker prize. I'll let you know.

I'm starting
for the Around the World In 52 Books challenge in another group. I have an obsession with South Africa so I'm really looking forward to this one.

Hi! I'm new here. I really like comfort reads too, they just help you to relax and get lost in them so easily. I'm reading Little Women right now.
Gabriella wrote: "Hi! I'm new here. I really like comfort reads too, they just help you to relax and get lost in them so easily. I'm reading Little Women right now."Hi Gabriella. Welcome to the group! Have you read Little Women before or is this the first time you've read it? I love that book and I've read it several times over the years.
Welcome, Gabriella! I, too, loved "Little Women" and saw the film (the one starring June Allyson (sp.?) for the upteenth time just a couple of weeks ago. My youngest daughter is named Beth. I'm reading "The Greatest Knight," it's time for a little historical fiction in my life!
Hi Gabriella, and well done for jumping right in! This has to be one of my favourite groups on GR, except for the effect on my TBR list.I'm currently reading Lily of the Nile, which I'm finding an easy read. On audiobook I have A Guide to the Birds of East Africa, which I'm enjoying very much. The reader, Bill Wallis, does a brilliant job.
Hiya Gabriella! Glad to have you here this is a wonderful group (Though I warn you your TBR list may get very large now that you're a member) :D I've never read Little Women before but it's my sister's favourite book to read :)
Oh, you guys are amateurs. The size of my to-read list (which dwarfs most) + my age + my reading speed & time to read = impossible. I can't stop though, and it's the fault of Goodreads' members, particularly those who are my GR friends and those who participate in this and other groups.

I finished it. I am not sure what the ending really meant. I may need to reread it. Definitely read it, Kathy, because it is an interesting story. And then tell me what happened so I can be sure that I got it right, haha!

Hi, to all the people who greeted me. Lisa, I read Little Women in grade 7, but I think it must've been a shorter version because I don't remember it being this long. Maybe it only had part 1 in it. I really look forward to all the books I'm gonna see in here. Krista of the Many Sparkles and Shimmies, I saw you in The Next Best Book Club.
Gabriella, I'm glad you're getting to read the full version now. I hope you enjoy it. I have the same edition I first read when I was 8, an illustrated edition, but I think it's complete.
Gabriella wrote: "Hi, to all the people who greeted me. Lisa, I read Little Women in grade 7, but I think it must've been a shorter version because I don't remember it being this long. The next part - that is, the part in which the girls got married - I knew as Good Wives. It seems that the second section was originally published separately, but the two parts of the book are now virtually always published together.
I recently re-read Little Women for the first time in about forty years, which was a very interesting experience and I've just finished reading Geraldine Brooks' March, which is very interesting for readers who know Little Women well (although not at all a comfort read!).
I've just finished Anna Funder's All That I Am, which was interesting and absorbing (although not at all comforting). Deciding to stay in the same time time and place, I've started After Midnight by Irmgard Keun. I wish that I could read it in German, although I understand that the translation is excellent.
Gabriella - Delighted to join with you in more than one active group. I've picked up quite a few GR groups and find this one to by my favorite of all. I feel most connected with others here, likely because of the daily chat thread. That being said, I do still enjoy each of the other groups in which I participate. :o)

Will do. Have you read Arthur & George by Barnes? I loved it.
Finished the second in the Nikki Heat books, Naked Heat. I will probably finish up what's out in the series with the third one, Heat Rises. I've read them on my Kindle. They're fun reads!
Jeannette wrote: "I am reading Rules of Civility. It isn't what I expected, and it is very good so far."I've wondered about this one for a while, Jeannette.
A GR friend recommended it. I'm really enjoying it, and hope to finish it before the weekend. I'll write a review.
Good luck writing your bestseller! ;)

Kathy,
That was my first book by Barnes.

I have the first word of the title, "The." LOL! Look forward to your review of Rules of Civility.
Today I'll start A Red Herring Without Mustard. It's a perfect comfort read book to bridge the way from 2011 to 2012. And, I'm also (slowly) reading 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die. I don't always like/agree with the "must" and "best" books, but this one is cool because you actually get to see each painting, even if it's not original, full size, or in a museum, but just in the pages of a book.
Lisa wrote: "Today I'll start A Red Herring Without Mustard. "
I really really need to start the series! I have the first two waiting for me.

I am reading an Everyman's Pocket Library book of Christmas stories by all the short story writers that I've not read enough of: Checkov, Tolstoy, Trollope, etc.

C., They're so much fun!!! I hope you'll also enjoy them.

Loved this book! I just wrote my little review, but I have to say that you should read this if you like non-fiction.

I remember seeing this book and wanting to read it, but I forgot about it. Thanks for posting about it, so I can now add it to my Amazon wish list.
