But the only reason i have not passed my license yet is because of parallel parking, sigh.

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments I'm listening to the audiobook of North and South narrated by Juliet Stevenson. It is wonderful. Juliet Stevenson is a fabulous narrator and I love the book. It's so Victorian - all those words, melodrama and sentimentality. I'm not always in the mood for that kind of thing, but I am at the moment.

And Gundula, don't feel bad about parallel parking. You'll get there eventually. I'm pretty good at it, because when I got my license I lived in a suburb where parking was at an absolute premium, so I had to learn to park in a space no bigger than my car. I live in that sort of suburb again now. However, my husband grew up in a country town where parallel parking (we call in reverse parking) didn't exist. Forty years after getting his license he is still not that great at it, but he manages.

Kim, I am actually better at parallel parking than at backing into a parking spot, that is like a book with seven seals (at least with parallel parking, I sometimes get it right), but reversing is a real ...

message 5154: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Gundula, don't be depressed about the parallel parking. You will get it. Practice makes perfect..... but some things need more practice than others .

It was wonderful to read it again. I got so much more out of it. My daughter is really enjoying it too.

Just to clarify: I think The Phantom of the Opera is a very good book. It just has too many French names in the very beginning, and I was sleepy. I always snooze on our drive to Oklahoma.

Yes, the auto-park feature made me nervous. It even decided the spot we picked wasn't the right one, and parked us a bit further up. It did do a good job.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kim wrote: "But the only reason i have not passed my license yet is because of parallel parking, sigh. "

Grrrr. How frustrating, and how stupid. If parking is an issue, people I know just avoid having to do it, but otherwise drive fine.

I've probably read it 100 times since I was 12. Every time, I get something new from it. The last time I loved Jem more than I ever had before.

I don't know how it happened, but the above post should be attributed to CeeAnne. She's reading To Kill a Mockingbird with her daughter.

Thanks, Jeannette. I think it was the page change??? Hurrah! We're over 5,400 posts.

CeeAnne, What a wonderful, perfect book to read with a daughter!

message 5162: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Jem too! He has such a kind soul.

Even I am confused about these posts, Jeannette, haha!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Just 50 pages in CeeAnne, but I think it's going to be good. I wasn't so sure when I started it and still not sure it's going to measure up to Santos' first two novels. We'll see. I hope to get some quality reading time in tomorrow on it.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments CeeAnne, Marisa de los Santos has done it again. I have about a fourth or less more to read, and her ability to create interesting characters has sucked me right in. I really didn't think I was going to care for this book, but Falling Together has grabbed me and not let go. I will hopefully finish it today.

message 5176: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 112 comments Kathy, delighted to hear you're enjoying Marisa de los Santos's next book. I loved her first two but, based on the description, didn't think I'd enjoy Falling Together. With your positive feedback, looks like this one is being added to me list. :o)

Kimberly The way she talks to him reminds me of how I talk to my pets. She wrote it really nicely.

Maude | 479 comments Kimberly, I read Wesley the Owl on Chrissie's recommendation and totally fell in love with him. I think you will, too.

message 5187: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I finished it at 7 this morning :) I loved it.

message 5188: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I didn't know one thing about barn owls until I read this book which was so interesting. I have to admit I cried buckets at the end.

message 5189: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I had a tear or two but thankfully I was on a bus. I lost one of my gerbils last week so I didn't want to add to that by crying about the ending and her.

message 5190: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Maude, do you remember that book about the parrot that talked and was so smart? He was in the news..... There is a book about him too, but it is not as good.

message 5191: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Chrissie I think it's Alex & Me How a Scientist and a Parrot Discovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence--and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process by Irene M. Pepperberg .

message 5192: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm barely having any time to read but I just started V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton. I'm very excited. I always enjoy her books. They're great comfort reads for me.

Darkpool | 222 comments Halfway through Geist Geist (Book of the Order, #1) by Philippa Ballantine by Philippa Ballantine, and enjoying it very much. Has great characters, and an interesting setting. Nearly finished The Black Ice by Michael Connelly, and I'm now totally addicted to Harry Bosch. I'm hoping to listen to the whole series on audiobook, so far enjoying narrator Dick Hill very much. He's good at the variety of accents required, and his female voices don't sound too forced or wrong.
