Sarah | 13814 comments Yay! Thank you all!
Sister Suvi are friends of mine from Canada and that song is definitely dangerous to get stuck in your head. I like that it's a rock band fronted by ukelele.

Gus - The Old Ceremony are from NC and play all over the south a lot and have a GREAT live show.

Most of the Nicole Atkins album Neptune City is quite awesome. I saw her solo a few weeks ago and it wasn't awesome (though her voice was), but I think she needs the swell of a band behind her.

Sarah, I didn't know the Old Ceremony is from North Carolina. I'll have to keep my eye out for them when they come back my way.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Sarah Pi wrote: "Is Bleeding Diamonds good?"

It's phenomenal, Sarah Pi. I've had that one on my playlist for a couple of years. I'd only heard The Way It is... but Bleeding Diamonds is my favorite.

Now it can be told. That's Tinted Windows with Taylor Hanson (of "Mmmm-Bop" infamy) fronting the guy from Smashing Pumpkins on guitar and the one-man wrecking machine Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick on drums.

Say what you will, but I sure wish I was collecting the royalty checks for "Mmmm-Bop."

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments My review of Heidi's "Sensitivity & Sensory Indulgences" shebang.

And she's not kidding! These songs almost hurt to listen to, with their lyrics of love and heartache. Fortunately, they were leavened with some happy songs too, or I'd be sobbing into my pillow. :)

My standouts:
1. Looking Out – Brandi Carlile. Amazing voice, so heartfelt.
3. Yummy, Yummy Yummy – Julie London. Um, yeah. So sensual, but I can’t help but snort at the lyrics.
4. Easy Silence – Dixie Chicks. Wonderful lyrics, this made me a little teary.
5. Crickets Sing for Anamaria – Astrud Gilberto. I love her voice! This one makes me dance around in my office chair. :)
* 11. Space Oddity – Natalie Merchant. I LOVE this!!! I want Natalie to cover ALL of Bowie’s catalog now.
12. How Much It Hurts – Just Off Turner. Yes.
14. Can I Get a Witness – Marvin Gaye. Another bounce in my chair song, love the brass, the beat, and the joy here.
16. Round and Round – Bob Schneider. This one just sweeps me along with its bounciness.
* 18. Come in Closer – Blue October. Love the intensity.
* 20. Go Outside – Cults. A perfect song for a sunny summer day. Yay!

I must admit, I found the cover art a little creepy. Very Picasso, Heidi. :)

message 558: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually I love the song MMM Bop. It's infectious and unapologetically upbeat.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Gus' Shebang - Favorites, Oddities, Covers, Remixes, Live Cuts, and other miscellany that appeal to me and probably only me

Scary cover art, Gus, but I LOVED this shebang. Luuuuurved it. Want to marry it kind of love it. :)

Stand outs:
** 1. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - Fire. Woo! "Fire, I'll take you to burn!" Love the over the top arrangement, the psychedelic organ, the brass, the crazy cackles - oh, the drama! Whee!!!

* 2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Rockers to Swallow. Awesome driving beat, awesome girl power "hey"s, I want to jump around to this one waving my fist in the air. And drive too fast. :)

3. The Count Five - Psychotic Reaction. Love the harmonica, the bluesy feel, the acceleration.

4. LCD Soundsystem - Drunk Girls. Fun!

** 5. William Shatner - Common People. I almost have this one memorized now, it's been on such constant rotation. Shatner's presentation, the lyrics, the beat, the singing, the guitar... there is no bad here.

* 6. She & Him - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want. This is my new theme song. ;)

* 9. The Modern Lovers - I'm Straight. Yeah, what's with Hippie Johnny? Why can't he take it straight, if he's so deep? Love the adenoidal voice, love the earnestness mixed with the laid-back beat.

* 10. The BPA (featuring Iggy Pop) - He's Frank - Slight Return. Awesome beat, awesome voice, I want to dance to this one while singing along. What DID happen to the cat? Yikes!

12. Mohammed Rafi - Jaan Pehechaan Ho. I'm doing my best to sing along with this one, too. I shudder to think what I must sound like to a Hindi speaker...

14. Bat for Lashes - Daniel. Gorgeous. This one takes me away.

15. Cut Chemist - Spoon. Weird and cool, this is mesmerizing. Love the flow.

16. Dinah Washington - Is You or Is You Ain't My Baby? (Rae & Christian Remix). Oh, man, what a great pair up! Dinah's vocals with this fat and sassy instrumentation. Perfect!

* 17. Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lighting. Ooohoooo! Love the Wolf. The perfect music for a hot summer night.

* Bonus Track - The Kleptones - 1800 War of Confusion. Hee! I'm singing along to this one, too, um, because I remember when "War of Confusion" came out the first time. Want more Sledgehammer! :)

Awesome, awesome, awesome...
* Five stars
** Infinite stars

Jackie writes the most awesome, comprehensive reviews. It makes shebanging totally worth it.

message 565: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments The reason I like doing shebangs with you guys is that people actually listen and report back. It's always sad when you give someone a mix you worked really hard to make and then you never hear a word about whether they liked it. I'm guilty of that myself, sometimes.

message 566: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreed, Sarah. I got royally pissed at a couple of friends last winter whom I sent some extra copies of the Winter Shebang (mine was the "New York" themed mix) because they asked for it. And they didn't bother to even let me know if they got it, despite me asking repeatedly.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Oh, heck, yeah, I love hearing what people think about my shebangs. Which is why I try to give what I hope to get, that way.

I also love all the new music I get, that I would NEVER find on my own. Like the Sister Suvi "Orange Bike" song on Sarah Pi's CD. I was dancing around to Zen's CD last night (there were some rockers mixed in with the techno), and today I'm listening to Clark's. Thanks to you guys, I am not quite as hopelessly out of touch with the current, and past, music scene.

Uh, what's with the crazy clown music, Clark?!

message 568: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yeah, glad you mentioned Orange Bike I've been muttering "I am the hottest motherfucker in this room, look at my new orange bike" A LOT. My wife thinks I'm insane.

Well, she already thinks I'm insane.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Yeah, I can't play "Orange Bike" at work, Gus. Because I sing along. :)

Shock Therapy, the slightly-tetched brainchild of the very troubled and now very dead Greg "Itchy" McCormick, a kid from my neighborhood who OD'd on alcohol back in 2008 at age 44.

Even WE didn't understand him.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I see.

I'm very glad the rest of the CD is NOT clown music, Clark. :)

Speaking of this...I have recently been listening to the mix you made me when you sent me the South African soap this spring. It is awesome, and I wish I were as cool as others to be able to review it for you.

Sarah | 13814 comments But you sent me a nice note at the time, which was enough acknowledgement for me :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Clark’s shebang – Detroit, Where the Weak Are Killed and Eaten

Clark’s CD had a great beat that just didn’t quit, and it’s the perfect Friday night at the bar soundtrack. Fun rockers, Clark!

My standouts:
1. Loppo, the Children’s Happy Clown – Shock Therapy. Shudders… this is EXTREMELY disturbing, Clark.
2. You Tell Me Lies – Freddy Lynxx and the Jet Boys. Love the horns, the lively sound, I must say, the singer doesn’t sound too upset about getting lied to.
5. Without Love – Tinted Windows. Boppy, perfect driving music for a summer day, with the windows rolled down.
8. Never Meant To – The Hoolapoppers. Great bass line, touching lyrics.
*14. Agony – The Muffs. Nice to hear some girls! Love the drumming and the tough girl singing.
15. Goodbye Mr. Nice Guy – Bazooka Jones. Hahahahahahaha!!! Sad, but true.
* 17. Sick of Drugs – The Wildhearts. Perfect rocker with everything, great beat, awesome lyrics, catchy chorus.
*19. Working Girl – The Strawberry Zotz. Love the 60s sound to this, with the British accents and the electric piano.
21. Scratch My Back – Motor City Rockers. Down and dirty, yeah!

*Five stars
Cool cover art too, Clark! And, great title. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Misha’s CD: Every New Heartbreak Becomes an Old Scar: Songs of Love, Pain, & Resilience from Washington.

This is one emotionally powerful playlist, with songs that had me weeping, and raging, and longing for love. And rocking out, too. :)

My standouts:

1. The Story – Brandi Carlile. This woman’s voice is incredible, and this song makes me ache for love.
2. Torn Blue Foam Couch – Grand Archives. Love the gorgeous ethereal sound of this one. I have no clue what they’re singing, but I don’t care.
4. I Will Possess Your Heart – Death Cab for Cutie. Love this mesmerizing beat, and minor key melody. Dreamy…
5. Almost Lover – A Fine Frenzy. Ouch ouch ouch, oh, this one puts a lump in my throat.
*6. Sympathy – Sleater-Kinney. After my poor sensibilities were shredded and I was almost in tears from the last song, this is EXACTLY what I needed – messy, loud DEFIANCE from the singer, and a hard rocking guitar. Yes!!!
*9. Meet Me on the Equinox – Death Cab for Cutie. This one was hauntingly beautiful, and the lyrics just hurt. As lovely as this is, I’m not sure I can listen to it very often.
* 13. This Dark and Twisty Road – Abney Park. Love the Latin beat, the romantic sound.
*16. Times Like These – Foo Fighters. I’ve always liked this one, this is just an awesome soaring rocker. This is a good song for lifting spirits – I like how you’ve structured this playlist, Misha.
17. My Song – Brandi Carlile. She’s just got it, doesn’t she?

* five stars

I liked the mix of styles, and the arc of the playlist from sorrow to anger to hopefulness, to independent strength. I bow to Misha’s skill. Perfect cover art, too! Awesome!

Sarah | 13814 comments Misha's Shebang:
First off: what a great and ambitious theme!

The Story - I love this song and the cathartic oomph when it gets going. Her voice is amazing, and I love the way she lets it break.

Torn Blue Foam Couch - I like the boy harmonies and the slow build.

Just Breathe - Eddie Vedder's strange voice makes this song. Words that wouldn't normally rhyme do when he sings them with that little lift at the end of the words.

I Will Possess Your Heart - I get Death Cab & the Postal Service confused. Death Cab is the one I like better. It's a long intro for my taste, but a memorable song once it gets started.

Almost Lover - great concept for a song, and neat chorus.

Sympathy - Love love love the S-K action. Another slow build!

Anti-Pleasure Dissertation - I like the song well enough. Kathleen Hanna's voice sometimes wears on me, but I'm ok with it here.

Crazy On You - A classic! Soaring vocals, harmonized lead guitars. Love it.

Meet Me on the Equinox - Catchy & memorable.

Clark Gable - So the Postal Service is the Ben Gibbard band with the more electronic sound. In the Death Cab songs his mellowness is contrasted by the guitars, but in Postal Service the laidback voice and the drumtrack & samples clash for me.

Bandages - Pretty & poignant.

Taping Over Rain - I can't remember it right now, but I think I dug it.

The Dark & Twisty Road - Am I supposed to sing that title to "The Long & WInding Road?" I love the rhythm and the low voice underneath the melody in the verse.

Burning of the Midnight Lamp - As discussed in the LZ/Hendrix thread, Hendrix doesn't really move me, even though I can appreciate him technically. That said, I really like this song, particularly the intro riff that repeats.

Turnaround - I had never heard this before - Nirvana covers Devo. I don't really like Devo, but I like this version well enough.

Times Like These - I somehow missed the boat completely on Foo Fighters. I know they're HUGE, but I barely know any of their songs. I think I dismissed them as too commercial, but I'm not sure that's a fair assessment. They're damn catchy songs, with epic feel.

My Song - Good song, but when the CD wraps around again to The Story, I realize how much more I like that song. I don't find this one to be as catchy or as good a use of her voice, but I think this one will grow on me.

Great work, Misha!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Zen’s shebang: Shebangs One Out

Woo, lots of techno here, not something I’m that familiar with. Lots of fun! Zen, you didn’t say who the artists were! Yes, I can look them up, but I’m lazy. :)
This music made me want to dance, and a lot of it was great for working along to. All the shebangs have been so different from each other, I'm enjoying the variety.

1. People Everyday – Mellow intro to the mix, I like the beat. This is a good song to work to.
* 3. Business Time – Flight of the Conchords. I love these guys! Hee!
4. Lifeforms (Path 1) – Um, wow! Am I tripping? I feel like I’m on a field trip, in the reptile house and aquarium.
9. Only This Moment – I like the female singer, with her cute British accent.
* 10. #1 Crush – Garbage. Trippy, dark, and awesome. Love Shirley Manson’s voice.
11. U Don’t Know Me. Outta my way, I’m getting on the dance floor!
13. Antidepressant 044 – Still dancing, and scrrrrrrrreaming like this. :)
* 14. Good Life – I really like the whistling melody and the tambourine. A good song to drive to on a sunny day.
17. Galvanize – I like the Middle Eastern sound to this one.

Cute picture of a onesie, Zen!
* =five stars

Zen (zentea) | 515 comments Thank you! I posted the band names and reason for including each song in the liner notes. Somewhere in this thread. I can't seem to find it with my small Droid screen. ...They are next to Heidi's liner notes. Couldn't get my program to print bands and songs so I gave up.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Aaah! I never reviewed Janet's shebang! She's disappeared, lately, but still!
I loved all the rock out tunes on hers, too.
So, here it is, Foot Tapping.

Stand outs:
1. Gone - The Black Crowes. Love the driving beat, the bassline, the rock god singing. This one channels Led Zeppelin, and I like it. :)
*2. Hate to See You Go - Moreland & Arbuckle. Funky, bluesy rock with that wailing harmonica. Half Allman Brothers, half ZZ Top, all good.
3. Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket. This is a good one to drive to, it pulls you along with that rhythm and wash of sound.
4. Mean Woman Blue - Roy Orbison. Gotta love Roy! He's got that voice, I love how the instrumentation and the beat is so understated, leaving Roy's voice front and center. Classic.
5. Nicotine and Gravy - Beck. Love the crazy lyrics, and the funky beat. I love most of Midnight Vultures, despite the hideous album cover. Beck's a musical genius.
*7. Our Swords - Band of Horses. I love how the bass provides the driving rhythm, the wistful sound of the lyrics, and the minor key melody. Wonderful
* 11. Sex Bomb - Spinnerette. NSFW and AWESOME! Sirens and gritty female rocking out vocals and that bass has me dancing around the room like a total dork, hair flying, arms everywhere. :)
12. Sink Hole - The Drive By Truckers. Dark lyrics, great minor key melody, this one is Southern Gothic creepiness. Love it.
(some confusion over song order as listed on the playlist, I'm putting them down the way I hear them)
14. No One Loves Me & Neither Do I - Them Crooked Vultures. Love the cowbell. Pure hard rock, it's all about the groove and the beat.
15. Kiss the Bottle - Lucero. A song to drink to, and to regret lost loves. This lead singer could sing the phone book and make me cry.

Very good stuff, Janet, wherever you are!
* = five stars

Sarah | 13814 comments I haven't had a chance to listen to CDs lately, so I'm still trying to catch up on spring before I start on summer.
Heidi's Sensitivity & SEnsory Indulgences Playlist:
Heidi, I always love your old school country songs, since it's music that I enjoy but don't have a lot of. The Hank and Willie songs were both fun. Unfortunately, "Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning" cuts off in the middle and stops my car's CD player. It's a strange glitch.
I love Heat Wave & Can I Get A Witness - those songs never get old.
I love the Dolly/Emmylou/Linda Trio song annd the Dixie Chicks song I love Natalie Merchant's version of Space Oddity - that whole album is great.

The Bright Eyes song was really cool, as was "How Much It Hurts". I walked around singing "Crickets Sing for Anamaria" for a week without knowing the words.

The only real miss for me is Harry Hippie. I didn't like the name, and the song felt kinda precious and self-satisfied and overwrought, an odd combination. But everything else was really fun! Thanks, Heidi!

message 591: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Thank you so much, Sarah. Right now, despite the fact that it's really unrelated... this little nicety just made my afternoon. I've been having a tough week and every bit of encouragement and validation seems to help.

I contemplated leaving off the "Last Thing I Needed" song because of that catch/glitch... and decided at the last minute to add it back to the mix.

I'm very glad to know you liked it. :)

message 592: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Gus’s Favorites, oDdities, etc.:
First off, great liner notes & a really enjoyable CD as a whole. I listened to it twice. Once before reading the liner notes, once after. There were a few I enjoyed more the second time around, but there's nothing I'd skip.
Favorite: I adore the Shatner/Jackson/Folds version of Common People more than I can possible say.
Close to favorites:
Rockers to Swallow – Evil guitars. Good stuff.
Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone. I can’t understand anything through the thick Scottish accent, but I love the melody and the guitarline that follows it and the crocodilerockian falsettos, and I’ve been walking around humming it for a while.
Psychotic Reaction - Fun.
Smokestack Lightning – Yowza
1800 War of Confusion – Fun with samples! I got Sledgehammer, War, and Land of Confusion. What am I missing?
Other notes:
Is the Black Joe Lewis song supposed to be a reaction to the Beatles song “Oh Darling”?
I thought you had reversed song and artist for #15 and it was a Spoon song I hadn’t heard. That was disappointing.
I still can’t get into Bat For Lashes. I think it’s my hatred for her cover of “I’m On Fire”. I can’t abide “Hey little boy is your mommy home?”. Not the same thing.

message 593: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Still working on clearing out the spring discs...still have to listen to Zen's, but here's Janet's.
Sorry for the brief review, Janet, but it's a fun mix. Most of it has that really enjoyable roots-rock feel that goes great with a nice drive. The switchup for "Sex Bomb" was a little unexpected, but I dug the song. Tegan-and-Sara-esque.
I haven't heard the Black Crowes since their second album, but I still like Chris Robinson's voice.
Loved the MMJ and Orbison songs, the Stones, Ike & Tina, Brass in Pocket, and the Lucero song. I haven't heard a lot of them, but I've liked what I've heard.
The only track I might skip the second time around is the Beck song "Nicotine & Gravy", which didn't really move me and also made me feel like my car was making funny noises.

Thanks, Janet!
