I share your opinion on poor Apple's moniker. If I were her, I'd legally change my name as soon as I was old enough.
I would just like to point out that my shebang did not include any songs from Drive-By Truckers or Lucero. That will never happen again.
Gretchen wrote: "I would just like to point out that my shebang did not include any songs from Drive-By Truckers or Lucero. That will never happen again."WHY!!?! I love both!
But Janet was kind enough to fill that void for us, Gretchen.
It's a miracle Janet and I didn't overlap any songs. If we did the same theme I can't imagine that happening. I get a lot of my music from her.
Admit it, Gretchen: you and Janet are the same person.
Oh alright. You caught me. I wanted to be able to submit 2 shebangs so I created a sock puppet. I blackmailed Jackie not to tell anyone.
(seriously, though. I would have made a much more interesting sock-puppet who actually posted in other threads and had a more convincing avatar.)
Gretchen wrote: "Me too! You mean why weren't they on my spring shebang? they just didn't fit."Oh, I read your post wrong. I thought you said you would NEVER put them on your shebangs ever again... Completely misread - see??
Gretchen wrote: "(seriously, though. I would have made a much more interesting sock-puppet who actually posted in other threads and had a more convincing avatar.)"or you made a less interesting sock-puppet so you could use that when someone confronted you about it.

Are you saying Janet isn't interesting?

I've been listening to Gretchen's shebang the last couple of days, and I'm really enjoying the variety, from reggae to rock to bluegrass. Well, okay, I don't like bluegrass, personally, but that's just me. :)
Stand outs:
1. Airborne Toxic Event - Wishing Well. I like how this one builds in intensity. It's a good intro song.
2. Patty Griffin - Heavenly Day. Oh, yes, Patty, I know exactly what you mean. So pretty, this song makes me a little teary.
3. Mumford & Sons - Roll Away Your Stone. This one sweeps me up with its energy and powerful lyrics.
*4. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - Crimson and Clover. Irresistable. Awesome.
*5. Dan Auerbach - I Want Some More. Yeah baby!
6. Blackbird - CSN. Disconcerting, and a little too careful, but hey, it's Blackbird. So pretty.
8. Matishyahu - On Nature. Love the bassline, I have trouble sitting still listening to this one, and I like the ecological message.
9. Yael Naim - New Soul. Adorable! Yes, I've felt like I've been making every possible mistake a lot lately, too.
*11. M.I.A. - Paper Planes. Scarily awesome.
* Five stars from me.
Great mix, Gretchen! And I love the artwork, so pretty! I want those shoes. :)
And thanks to Sarah Pi and Clark for their awesome reviews of my shebang. You really can't go wrong with the Kinks, can you? :)

Is that like when my roommate's dog pees because she gets so excited that I'm picking her up?
Jackie "the Librarian"You really can't go wrong with the Kinks, can you? :)"
I've yet to hear a Kinks album I didn't love. I was going to add something on one of my shebangs from "Schoolboys in Disgrace" or "Sleepwalker" and then completely blanked out when pulled together the track lists.

Zen! Business Time. heheh. I'm all dancing to that song in the car and then I have to giggle because my windows are down and people can probably hear the lyrics. "And then you sort out the recycling. That's not part of the foreplay but it's very important."And what's all this stuff in the early tracks and then again later? Electronica, House, Dance? I'm so clueless. What are we calling this genre? I don't listen to that kind of music, whatever it is, EVER. But I'm enjoying it. It makes me want to do drugs.
Cat Stevens--Father & Son! Really?!? Do you want me to cry my eyes out? Good God that song gets me right here.
Thanks for the journey.
Wait, Jackie! You put both of the songs with the children's choruses on stand-out! I thought that bugged you.

Some Techno, some Ambient, some Electro House, some Electronica,... here this may help (or intimidate) you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...
Glad you enjoy it! Now go pop some Tylenol! ;)
Sally wrote: "Yeah, Zen's shebang reminded me of my glory days. ♥"What?! Your glory days have only just begun!
Gretchen wrote: "Wait, Jackie! You put both of the songs with the children's choruses on stand-out! I thought that bugged you."Huh, really? I hadn't noticed. Let me think about this...
Okay, got it. They weren't cutesy choruses, I guess, Gretchen. Those are the ones that bug me, the ones with tinkly high piano bits, you know the ones I mean.
If they're singing about mugging people, I'm totally fine with it. :)
Zen's mix reminded me of when I used to take acid and Ecstasy on an almost weekly basis. I think I had a contact high just listening to the Crystal Method again.
Clark's shebang:I'd only ever heard one of these songs before. I use the word "fun" a lot because I can't catch most of the lyrics and it doesn't matter. The whole mix has a good feel, just my taste for a post-work turn it up loud drive.
1. Loppo, the Children's Happy Clown - Creepy as all get out.
2. You Tell Me Lies - New York Dolls-ish fun. More Dollsish than the Dolls song that comes along later.
3. Sweet Thing - Kinda catchy.
4. Hello Mr. Daniels - Countryish fun.
*5. Without Love - Love it!
6. Full Time Fool - Can't remember this one right now, but I think it had a really good hook.
8. Little Punky Hood - Rockabilly fun.
9. Billy Rubin - Was this the one that ripped off My Generation? I think so. I like My Generation, so I liked the song.
10. Pretty Dress - OK. Not my favorite on here, but fine.
11. Throwin' Rocks at the Moon - Good.
12. Vagabond MOon - OK.
13. How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live - Good stuff.
*14.Agony - Awesome. Great yowl.
15. Goodbye Mr. Nice Guy - poppy fun.
16. Live It Up - the 80s production nearly killed me. Have to skip.
17. Sick of Drugs - ok.
18. Cherry Baby - Too much hairspray but catchy.
19. Working Girl - ok.
*20. Shout Bama Lama -Awesome voice.
21. Scratch My Back - Got a good classic sound.
22. Better Than You - Is this one of the new songs? Good stuff.
23. Let Me Do Your Laundry - A sweet and touching song about domestic help.
24. I Was a Kamikaze Pilot - Fun.
Gretchen wrote: "Sarah Pi! I love your shebang. I put most of those songs on my IPod so I can always listen to them."Yay! I think you and I have some pretty compatible musical taste. Except for Jack Johnson ;)
Agree with Gretchen; I've uploaded about 9 songs from Sarah Pi's mix onto my iPod.
I've got a playlist called "Shebangs" where I've put all my favorite songs from every mix CD swap, even from the MiniAm days.

Gus wrote: "Agree with Gretchen; I've uploaded about 9 songs from Sarah Pi's mix onto my iPod...."
Hooray! Which ones, Gus? I can't tell from your review since you mentioned more of the stuff you already liked than the new stuff. I like to know for future reference.
I'm not asking Gretchen the same question only because she said "most of", though I'd love to hear what got skipped too.
Apparently I take this VERY seriously.
The only one I know got skipped off the top of my head was something about purple. There were only two or three others that weren't my cuppa.
Gus wrote: "Zen's mix reminded me of when I used to take acid and Ecstasy on an almost weekly basis. I think I had a contact high just listening to the Crystal Method again."So I'm Your Pusher? LOL!
Gretchen wrote: "The only one I know got skipped off the top of my head was something about purple. There were only two or three others that weren't my cuppa."Gotcha. Gogol Bordello does not appear to go down well in this crowd. I know Gus said that wasn't his favorite either.
Zen, yep. I may need another fix from you soon.
Sarah, if you must know, the songs from your mix on my iPod currently are:
- Four Leaf Clover (Old 97's)
- Papers in Order (The Old Ceremony)
- New Orange Bike (Sister Suvi)
- Borneo (Firewater; there's also another Firewater song from your previous mix on my iPod as well)
- A New England (Billy Bragg)
- New York New York (Ryan Adams)
- Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Nina Simone)
- The Way it Is (Nicole Atkins)
- The Whole Shebang (Grant Lee Buffalo)

A New England (Billy Bragg) and the Michelle Schocked/Wilco (first track) are my faves from your mix, Sarah Pi. I was cursing you last night when I had Sister Suvi firmly stuck on a loop in my head, though.
"I am the hottest motherfucker in this room. Look at my new bike! Look at my new bike!"
Yeah, I don't need to hear the wearing purple song again, either. Once was good, Sarah Pi.Okay, I listened to your mix on repeat yesterday, and I love the variety. And I love your cover art, in color and EVERYTHING! Wow!
My standouts:
2. Four Leaf Clover - the Old 97s. Love the dirty garage band sound, the train-like beat, and the mournful yet somehow upbeat singing.
*3. Corvette - Golden Fog. Perfect little polished rock song, great song to drive to. I'm already singing along to this one.
*6. New Orange Bike - Sister Suvi. AWESOME! Love the mesmerizing start moving into lyrical insanity. I have to restrain myself from singing along at work, though. SO NSFW.
7. Borneo - Firewater. A fun mix of novelty song and toe-tapper.
9. One Perfect Stranger - Nathan Larson. A nice piece of pop, reminds me of a lot of Squeeze's stuff.
10. New York, New York - Ryan Adams. More pop goodness.
13. Over It - The Borrowers. Great break up song! This would be fun to sing to after a drink or two.
14. Wave of Mutilation - The Pixies. This song should be played AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE. Awesome guitar, awesome fuzzy sound, great rock beat.
17. Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Nina Simone. This one sends shivers along my skin.
*19. The Way It Is - Nicole Atkins. The chimes, the slow dark beat, the sultry singing, the lyrics, the gradual build to the heartfelt declaration of love, oh my god, I LOVE this, Sarah Pi! I can see singing this with all kinds of gestures in front of the mirror... sigh
Sarah Pi, thank you. Great shebang!
* means five stars
