I was just thinking about this. Well, the what to name it part. I was thinking something like Spring Shebang - or Time to Shebang It Again. Maybe Shebangs, Shebangs!
RA, you're funny: I don't mind not organizing is like an algebra equation. I have to cross out the negatives to see what you really mean.
I mind organizing, I don't mind organizing, I mind not organizing, I don't mind not organizing. *spins*

I'm thinking it would be cool if we each did something completely different, like spring/summer/fall/winter or happy/sad/angry/calm/joy or ... morning/afternoon/evening/middle of the night (doh! already done!)

No, no. Nobody is assigning themes.
I was just hoping for complete diversity in the mixes this time - sometimes they seem to overlap. But I'm probably, totally bowing out on this one seeing as how I'll be pushing a human through my loins round bout time for mailing these puppies.

I'll participate but does the sound of guitars, drums, amps, and microphones kicked down a few flights of stairs qualify as a "theme"?

"New ____"
You could go with New York, or new year, or songs that are newly on your radar, or new songs by old favorites, or any one of a million things, but there is still a common thread.

New ____
Old ____
Quiet ____
Loud _____
With an option for a person to make her/his own theme, of course, right?
I already have a theme in mind. I'm going guitar-free this mix. Nothing with guitars.

HELL YEAH IT DOES!!!

Yes...say ten people are in the exchange, YC. You send the organizer 9 copies of your mix CD (with cover art, playlist, etc.) and a self-addressed stamped envelope with some postage on it. Then the organizer makes sure everyone gets everyone else's CDs, etc. and sends them back.
Did I say that right? Anyone have anything to add?
Even though most here will hate anything I come up with, I'm in.
But I can almost guarantee it will be filled with stuff you've never heard before.
Except for maybe KD and Gus...

I hate that kind of sentiment.
You all will hate my musical taste because it is completely above/beyond you...
You've never heard of any of the bands I listen to because I'm just that much cooler.
Well, except for these two dudes. They're super cool, like me, so they might know some of the super obscure bands that I like.
Whatcha sayin', Clark? You'll not listen to anyone else's mixes because they'll sound like radio scraps to you?

That wasn't how I meant it. I help moderate over at Rateyourmusic.com and was involved in several exchanges over there. My mixes were universally met with the sound of crickets chirping.
Cool? Hardly. I think I bought two albums during the 90's - "Definitely Maybe" by Oasis and "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" by Social Distortion. I haven't progressed beyond, oh, 1988. Anything I buy is either a compilation or rereleased albums from the 70's or 80's appended with bonus material. Or throwbacks to the 70's or 80's. Stuck in the past...hold all calls.
As for radio scraps, please bear in mind I grew up in the 70's, a time when we figured music couldn't get any worse. So much for prescience...

I think some of my tastes are obscure, but when I make a mix for others, I try to ask "what music can I turn them on to that they might actually seek out or play again in the future?" It's ok to be obscure so you're not just giving them stuff they already have, but I don't see the point of wasting ten CDs if I don't think anyone will actually like the songs on the mix.
Clark, you've put up tons of awesome looking albums and playlists. New York Dolls & Bowie & Rancid & Katrina & the Waves, and it sounds like you have lots of obscure B sides and stuff.
But whatever...

Guilty as charged of trying to push my tastes on others and trying to convince them my past was better than theirs. Call me "hopeless," but there's still something about hooks and verse-chorus-verse that punches all the neurons, obscure or not.
"Obscure" being a relative term, of course.

Thank you. I panic without structure. :)
Ah, that makes sense Clark. You're being humble. Well, we all feel that way (I presume) when we submit 18 of our nearest and dearest and then wait for feedback.
Please disregard my snarkiness, I seem to be more and more evil as time goes on.
