SOLVED!: A book about baseball all written in letters [s]

I read this book around 2000 and it was published around that time. It was written in the form of letters from a young boy to a famous baseball player. The baseball player ends up writing back to the boy and they form a friendship. In the end the baseball player goes to war and is killed and it's very sad. It was a wonderful book and I'd love to find the name of it. I've googled it to no avail, hunted on Amazon and had no luck.

Yay! Glad that's it. :) Incidentally (forgive me for going into lecture mode), the term for a story told in letters is "epistolary tale" or (more usually) "epistolary novel." So I Googled "epistolary baseball" and there were several pages that talked about this book. :) (Just in case you ever find yourself in this situation again. But either way, happy re-reading!)
