Cheyenne | 16 comments In the left ear yes. We didn't find out until I started school, and it didn't get worse until the three surgeries attempting to repair my eardrum when I was 8 actually damaged it worse.

I haven't been raised in a Deaf family, which is why I never learned sign and why I went through surgeries to "fix" me. The more I learn about the Deaf Culture, the more I realize my Deaf beliefs. Though I'm still learning a lot, I do identify as Deaf now. I used to be embarrassed about my hearing and I didn't tell anyone, even my teachers, but now I'm proud of who I am.

Cheyenne | 16 comments If you weren't born deaf Shana, is your family hearing?

message 53: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 16 comments I just read your comments about your mother, Shana. That makes me very sad. I agree with you and Michael, there's no reason for you to speak. It's your choice not to and your mother should respect that. It's horrible that she won't learn to sign! I hope she changes her mind.

My mother didn't used to be very supportive of my being hard of hearing either, but now that she is starting to go deaf herself she's very accepting and has even been showing interest in learning some signs. I'm proud of her. I hope your mother starts showing more of an interest as well.

Cheyenne | 16 comments So half of your family is Deaf then. I wonder why your mom would be with a Deaf man but then be upset that you're Deaf. Sounds like you're in a complicated situation, but it's good that you're happy.

Cheyenne | 16 comments Oh, I see. That's really sad about your mom. Maybe one day she'll change, but it sounds like you've got some good support from your dad's side of the family anyway.

Cheyenne | 16 comments Because I grew up in a hearing family so I wasn't exposed to Deaf Culture or sign language until recently. My godsister (the mother of my deaf godniece) has taught me a lot, and my sister in law took a sign language class in college and taught me most of what I know. I also have an ASL dictionary, so I've learned from that as well.

Shana Harris | 36 comments Cheyenne, Oh ok What your sister name Are you keep up signing and Do you sign to your Dad and Mom. Where you get your Deaf from.I got my Deaf from my Dad family..Dont stop signing Friend.

message 66: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 16 comments My godsister's name is Jamie and my sister-in-law's name is Catherine.

My mom doesn't know sign, but she wants to learn. I sign to my niece, some of my siblings, several of my friends, and some of my teachers. I started signing to my dog too, I want her to respond to signs instead of speaking.

I'm Deaf because I had tubes in my ears when I was a toddler and they stayed in too long and left a hole. Doctors tried to patch the hole several times and ended up just making my hearing worse. It's because of scar tissue and the hole, not because of something to do with the nerve.

message 67: by Shana (new)

Michael Thal (goodreadscommichael_thal) | 23 comments Losing one's hearing is an emotional tsunami. I should know. I lost my hearing 20 years ago. To help me work through the turmoil, I wrote Goodbye Tchaikovsky. I think everyone here can relate. Here's the link:http://tinyurl.com/bh95ht7
