~Just wondering what everyone uses for bookmarks?
~Do you have a specific style you prefer if so what is it?
~Where do you buy them?

Cyn Mistress Kitty (beachlover) I use the small, skinny post-its that people use to show where to sign a document. I like these because they come in many colors and I try to color coordinate them with the cover of the book.(I'm anal retentive) I like that they are easy to stick on and take off. You can get them at any office supply or even Walmart.

message 3: by KellyJo (new)

KellyJo | 16 comments I always grab them when I go to the book store.. they have free ones at the check out. I have ten different colors. I just get one when i need it..

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments A friend sent me a book thong for Christmas and I love it! Mine is on a length of burgundy colored ribbon, with beautiful beading on one end and a dragonfly charm on the other. This one is made so the ribbon is doubled over, one length lays on the spine of the book and the other length is inside the book. You can allow the inside length to be your mark, or you can take one of the ends and fold it over so it marks the page for you.

The one she gave me fits all sizes of books so it's been my bookthong ever since I got it.

Maybe I'll have my daughter take a picture of it and post it here.

KarenH | 121 comments I use a bookmark I got in Hawaii. It's made out of balsa wood and shaped like a surfboard, complete with fins to keep it in place and a leash on the end with (what else?) puka shells.

Cheryl (ghemomma) | 900 comments Dhestiny and Karen- sounds pretty! pictures would be nice!

I use a note card that has a blue and white toile print all over it, I'm obsessed with toile- it is in just about every room in my house!

message 7: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Toile is gorgeous! I spent a small fortune on enough length of toile so my daughter would make a duvet cover and drapes for my bedroom. I even bought the sewing machine for her... I never got my duvet or drapes. :(

That is indeed a sad story! :(

I need to find an official bookmark with toile on it, it makes me happy! My kitchen has red/white toile, my bedroom has blue/white toile comforter, bathroom has blue/white toile curtains and I have a lot of pottery/knick/knacks with toile print.

ok, suppose I should answer my own question huh?

I love bookmarks! I an currently using one that is magnetic, it clip on the page adn the magnets hold it in place so even if the book is dropped etc, its stays. It have a big "H" on it and has all these words that start with the letter "H"...ie, happy, humor etc.

I like all thinks Victorian so I am always on the look-out for Victroain looking bookmarks, and florals, love florals.

I could some really pretty ones ar a dollar general store a few years back but they no longer have them, which bums me out.

Our local bookstore carries some that you can put your own photos in, but I have yet to get one of them.

OMG Daniel how can you do that to the pages it hurts me to think it (LOL) I have Edward Cullen always while I read in bookmarks ***sigh*****

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments Good subject! I use almost anything...my friends make fun of me, and one of them bought me a really nice one with my initials - but i don't use it. I hate it when they fall out...and they always do.

I like the sticky notes idea...I've used that one on occasion.

Lisarenee | 392 comments Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "I love to collect bookmarks. Sadly, I don't use them very much. I'm one of those evil people who dogear the pages (ducking tomatoes)."

*GASP* Danielle, I don't know if we can be friends any more. Just kidding! :)

Cynthia, I've got an Edward bookmark too. :)

Okay, I use just about anything handy as a bookmark. (Maybe that's worse then dog earring the pages?) Lost my library card once that way. Oops! My favorite bookmarks, however, as I mentioned somewhere else are sticky/post-it notes. I like them because if I drop my book they stay in place. Also, I hate marking in my book so I would never fold a page or write in one so by tearing off a strip of a post-it I can mark where a word is I'd later like to look up. I'm way too busy enjoying the story to look them up while I'm reading. I've tried the thong book mark and find the pages get damaged while I'm trying to adjust the placement, therefore, I don't like them.

Cyn Mistress Kitty (beachlover) This is why I like my Kindle. You can look up a word right then and there and you can bookmark a page. The draw back is that you don't have an actual book to hold and keep. I get about half of my books on Kindle so it helps cut down somewhat on the hundreds of books. Storage was becoming an issue.

message 18: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz I have lots of different kinds of bookmarks. I don't like cutesy animals, flowers or hearts though. I think my favourites are the magnetized ones. I don't particularly like metal bookmarks because they can rip the pages. I'm always buying bookmarks when I see something I like especially beach scenes or original looking ones :)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I also have a gorgeous thank you note a dear friend wrote a note to me on, and I use that occassionally, but I want to frame it so I need to stop using it so it doesn't get ruined.

message 20: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments That's ok, Danielle! I love you anyway. And while others may scorn you, I thank you - it's people like you who keep the used book prices lower because they are classified as 'well used.' I bet I save .50cents when books are dog earred. HA!

Hahahaha! That is so great! This is why we need you Dhestiny- not only do you make me laugh but you always have such good reasoning behind things!

Keep dog-earring them books, Danielle, I'm saving me some money!!

Danielle The Book Huntress *Pluto is a Planet!* (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Ah, thanks, Dhestiny, and Cheryl. I tend take fairly good care of my books, despite the dogearing. I'm kind of possessive, so the ones that I rate 3 star or above don't leave my possession. They look pretty gently used, except for the ones I bought that were well-used or the ones I got a long time ago.

message 24: by Julianna (last edited Feb 18, 2010 04:19PM) (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 380 comments I always use a bookmark. My daughter kept stealing (and loosing) mine, so I bought a few at the school book fair that I now hide in my desk where she can't find them.:-) I have a couple with kitties and puppies, one that says, "Reading Is the Ultimate Superpower", and one that has strawberries dripping with chocolate (yum!). I also have one with a teddy bear and a pink tassle that I've had for years, and I recently bought a really nice Twilight one that hasn't been used yet. It's a big one that doesn't fit my mass market PBs very well, so I'm saving it for my trade and HCs. I usually pick my bookmark to either match my book or my mood.;-)

message 25: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I've decided to make a trip to the craft store for ribbon and charms to make more book thongs. The one I have, as I said, is burgundy and has a dragonfly charm and victorian looking beading on one end, and more beautiful victorian looking beading on the other end.

Cyn Mistress Kitty (beachlover) My cousin gave me a great one that has a picture of a woman with a scowl and pointing saying Does your mother know you're reading this trash?
I have to laugh. Actually, my mother would say that.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 469 comments Back when I was much younger I did do some dog-earring but not now. I will grab whatever I can find to keep my place and if nothing is available I will try to memorize the page number until I do. But I do have bookmarks I've gotten from the library or that were given to me that I try to use.

message 28: by Holly (new)

Holly (velvetsun) | 144 comments I actually use a couple of bookmarks that I got free from the library. I've had some nice ones in the past, and I usually end up either losing them. :P

message 31: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I got mine when I purchased a leather cover for my Kindle. Even though I have the Kindle, I still have TONS of books on my TBR.

This site has some cool stuff and the bookmark I got is quite strong. If you journal, they have some nice ones.

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments I used to make my own. I'd take a picture I'd like (usually of some delicious man) put it over a small piece of strong cardboard and then take packing tape and 'laminate' it. I also did that with minature pictures of my favorite book covers.

I use magnetic bookmarks lately. They are wonderful... you never loose your place. I usually get them at bookstores. Actually that is the only place I have ever seen them. I have thought about making my own magnetic bookmarks, but haven't yet.

Tip from an old boyfriend of mind (medievil history scholar). He always just turned down the corner of the page he was reading- hopefully not of the ancient texts!) and that's mostly what I do these days. The husband hates this technique- he's very precious about books. I'd be happy just to put them facedown open so breaking the spines and everyone else I know really, really hates that!

EDIT- looks like we are at one on this Danielle!

message 42: by MashJ (last edited Aug 02, 2010 12:38PM) (new)

MashJ | 733 comments Actually- serious point here. WHen printing was first developed books were incredibly valuable. These days they are more like consumables and yet our reverence seems to have continued towards books in a way it hasn't towards some other aspects of life. Obviously my reverence has had a bypass but I'm referring to the general population! I love books but mine tend to be somewhat lived in.

message 43: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I've heard it said that a book isn't really "owned" unless it's had page corners folded over, notes all over the pages and the spine well cracked.

***shudders***

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 630 comments When I reserve books in the library they put a bookmark thingy in the book with your name on it so I use that, I have a supply of them as I always lose them!

Ditto and I'll add a cringe for good measure. I know what they say about something being well-loved if it's worn, but I love my books enough not to abuse them that way.;-)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I like book thongs, too. A friend sent me a gorgeous one and I use that almost exclusively, but I also found these awesome magnet ones.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 630 comments I don't bother buying nice bookmarks anymore as I always always lose them! But I see these really nice ones, but they will just end up lost in thr black hole where all my other book marks, odd socks and left earrings go!

message 50: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments LOL Suzanne!!! The nice thing about the magnetic ones is that they stay stuck in the book, so they don't fall out.

Now, that said, I'm missing four of them because when I finished a book, I sat the magnet down somewhere and lost it. LOL
