Katelyn | 14 comments In Voyager; after Claires carrage ride. Mr. Wallace asks Claire "Might I beg the pleasure of accompaning you to your destination? You will surely require some assistance in the removal of you luggage" To which Claire responce is; "Er...Thank you, but I...er, I'm leaving my luggage in charge of the landlord. My..my....My husbands servant will come fetch it later."
Did she even have luggage? Or did she actually leave it there? And then what did happen to it?
Surely, she would have came with more clothes, or atleast she would have bought another dress when she arrived.
I guess my question kind of corasponds to another that was asked about where Claires money went. Did she spend it on the carrage ride or did she loose it when her dress was mended?

Carolyn F. I don't think she had any luggage, just what was on her.

I listened to Voyager on audiobook recently and she does offer money to Fergus when she goes to Lallybrock (sp?), so she must have still had the money on her.

EvaS (evikes) | 345 comments I’m quite sure she had no luggage but told the man that because it would have been odd otherwise. Didn't she have to borrow a dress from one of the girls at the brothel while they mended hers? I literally thing she came with the clothes on her back.

Regina (reginar) Yes, I agree Carolyn and Eva.

Lori (lahood) | 217 comments She never had any luggage, just what was sewn into her pockets.
As for what happened to her money, the dress she was wearing was left at the brothel and she was provided with a new gown as per Jamie's request(page 274). For some reason, I too thought that her dress was supposed to be mended, but there is no mention of repairs at all. I think that the money was forgotten amidst all of the excitement.

message 7: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. That's right, in plastic wrap. And needles with tablets in one of her pockets which she brought to Lallybrock (sp?).

Regina (reginar) And penicillin -- liquid in the shots.

Judith | 26 comments If, I recall correctly, Claire had sewn special pockets in her coat and dress skirt in order to safeguard the money, penicillin, etc. She did not have luggage. Why waste money on luggage--that is today's world. She needed an excuse regarding luggage for the nosy coach passenger, so she lied to him. (Wouldn't you lie to a nosy, pushy, fellow passenger on the bus, train, or plane?) Money was used for coach trip to Edinburgh and odds and ends required during the following days--a penny here, a penny there (food, wine, tips, clothes, shoes, etc.).

There was no explanation about the money, meds, etc. during the brothel episode but use your imagination. Just because it was not written in the book does not mean it did not get done. Lots of things happen behind the scenes (unwritten) but we really don't miss them unless we need them. Afterall the books are long with all the important things that happen. For example, you did not even know about the penicillin and needles until Jamie got shot and Claire had to save him. Important things happen when they are needed. Thats what stories are about. No time to sweat the small stuff. And, as much as we wish it were real life--especially Jamie, it is just a work of fiction.

Sorry about being so brutal in my response but the the fantasy versus reality that threads through these discussions always make me smile.
