ok, I think I am getting a little OOC with this stuff!

I found this - http://2010mobyawards.wordpress.com/ - and RSVP'd to it.

Its the 1st annual Book Trailer Award Ceremony. It's formal dress, red carpet-ish, and will have some celebrity announcers, though they haven't said who yet.

It's May 20th (Thursday) at 7pm in NYC.

Whoo Fricken Hoo people! I made sure that book bloggers are considered part of the "media" and the person who emailed me back said we are welcome!!!

I know I always ask, but is anyone interested in attending this?

What's the best way for me to outline my days?
I tryed looking at the sight today to get an idea, and it made my head hurt! How do I know what booths will have what authors on what time and at what time??

I need help!

Lisa, did you pay extra for the lunch and drinks with the authors?

Yeah I paid about $20 for the the lunch and drinks-not bad i thought
You definitely need to set aside about an hour and go through the BEA site to find everything but it is well worth your time.
We set a side two days for the conference.

Lori - they dont really set it up in the best way. Here is what i do: Go here http://www.bookexpoamerica.com/en/Aut...

and go to the link that says "Look who's signing". Ignore their whole search/find functionality. Its useless. Instead, download the two PDFs that are "Autographing Area by Day" and "In Booth Autographing by Day".

Once i do that, i print them out, take a highlighter and get comfy. you can see the times, authors and book descriptions all together. Once i have poured through both lists, I make myself a master document that lists which booths and which tables i want to hit. I have done this for the past 3 shows and it has really helped me to know where to be when. SOmetimes you cant hit all the stops, but at least you know where to try.

Does that help? You definitely have to do soem homework to get the most out of this show in my opinion. but it is SO WORTH IT.

Also, during the 'down times' you will want to walk around the booths. THere are hundreds of stacks of books that are from authors not listed here - they just arent being signed.

Ok, I just saved the PDFs to my pc, and will print them out at work tomorrow. Thanks for the tip! I would have been at that all week :)

For those of you who are going, maybe we can meet up someplace in the morning? What days are you attending?

I will be going Wednesday and Thursday, and then will also be there for the Book Blogging Conference Friday. The Blogging pass is not for Tuesday right? Or is it? Did I ask this already?

message 59: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I will be in NYC Tues-Saturday. I want to plan out some sort of Happy Hour after the Javits closes for the day. I'm wondering how popular the YA authors will be, plenty of the ones I'm interested in are signing at the same time. Booooo.

Ooohh... I got an rsvp to the book bloggers convention get together two nights before the actual event. Anyone else?

message 64: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Hi Lori - I think I am going to get to the convention on Wed around 8:45 - would love to meet up then. Am still trying to figure out a way to get all the books I want home. At previous shows, I have had a car to fill up and then drive home. But now that I live in the city, I don't have a car anymore and one suitcase just isnt going to do it. I am trying to avoid to taxi trips to my apartment because I will miss too much of the show!

You should definitely park your car nearby. Then you can fill it up throughout the day. It will be much easier for you!

Im just terrified to drive deep into the city. The Javits Center has it's own parking garage, right?

I would totally be up for a meet! I was planning on getting there early Wednesday, to give myself time to drive around and find the place, and a place to park. So I will be leaving my house around 4am (Its a two hour drive, and I want to beat the traffic) - so if all goes well, I will be there sometime after 6am.

PM me so we can exchange cell phone #'s, if you like.

oh my gosh. 4 am!! you are gonna be tired - but it will be worth it! There isnt really a convention center garage - but there are garages nearby. there is one on 38th between 11th and 10th and there is a lot directly across the street. if you get there that early, you'll have no problem getting a spot. And you are lucky that Javits is JUST through the tunnel, so you wont have to drive through much of manhattan.

I think I am actually going to get a zip car for a few hours to transport books home. Still debating about that.

I'll send you a PM with personal info!

message 67: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10633 comments Mod
Got your PM, what is a Zip car?

message 68: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments zip car is a car share program. Used mostly in big cities for people that dont have cars (like me) you can get a car for an hour or two. they are parked all over the city, so they are really convenient.

Ok, so I was really nervous about driving into the city, and it turns out driving into the city wasnt that hard! That could be because I didnt actually drive once I got out of the Lincoln Tunnel... tee hee. I parked at Port Authority, and walked the 8 blocks to the convention center.

I got there early, and since i'm "press" i got to walk through the expo as the booths were being set up. I couldnt take any books, but I could peek around. One of the maintenance men joked with me the 6th time I walked by him -- " you must have seen the place twice over by now"... I told him I was trying to get the lay of the land before all the mayhem ensued.

Once the people were let in, it was chaos!
Shoving and pushing.. oh my god!

Then things calmed down and it wasn't that bad. Authors signed at the publishing booths for 1/2 hours at a time, and other were signing at an author autograph area that was mobbed all day long.

I managed to snag 45 books. I was able to get 10 signed. 3 books (two with signatures) are for my youngest. 15 are YA novels (that I hope I like, and will also be sharing with my oldest - well, the non-girlie ones, at least). The rest are mine all mine!

I havent downloaded my pics yet, but would you like to see which books I got?
Head over the splurge section to see em... Im putting them up now.

I was supposed to stay to attend the HarperCollins Blogger Celebration tonite, but I was basically dead on my feet by 4pm (their event didnt start until 7pm) and I still had a 2 hour drive home, so I chose not to stay. I may not even go back tomorrow, its going to be the same set up as today, just with different authors and different free books. It kills me to say I wont go back, but you have no idea how much I HURT from all the walking and from carrying those damn books around!

I met Bridgit from TNBBC! She and I spent about an hour and 1/2 together in the morning. She was very organized, and I learned alot from following her around. Then we split up and did our own things - I cant wait to see what kinda day she had!!!

I also met Erica from HarperCollins. She's been suppling me with galleys for my blog! She is sooo cute and bubbly. We talked for about 20 minutes, and would you believe that I forgot to ask to have our picture taken together! Dangit!

I also met JONATHAN LETHEM briefly, as he was there signing this chapbook kinda thing he wrote. they dont let you take set up shots (no time, since each author only signs for 30 minutes), but I did get a photo of him signing a book....

and I met Justin Taylor, an author I recently read. But I didnt get his signature. When I met him, he wasnt even set up yet.

I met the people at GrayWolf Press, but the girl that I know through my blog, Marisa, was not there. The others knew me by name, since apparently Marisa loves me (yes, Im getting a big head!)

All in all, a very awesome, overwhelming, kickass day!

And I handed out a bunch of my cards, and got a couple in return.

Phew!

Marisa Atkinson (totesmarisa) | 28 comments It's true! I do!

I'm glad you've had such a great time at BEA so far. And I know your feet are aching, but you should definitely go again tomorrow. After all, it only comes around once a year! :)

Also, 45 galleys?! No wonder you're exhausted. What did you have signed?

message 75: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Gearing up for day 2! Am exhausted, but got a decent haul yesterday. 72 books in total so far. Its definitely a smaller show than in year's past. Damn you economy! Will post a full list when I get home tonight.

Boy do my feet ache!

Ok.

I have a confession to make.

I ended up returning to the BEA. I woke up, did some housework, got the kids on the bus, and talked myself into going back.

I got there around 1pm, and made it to the BBC pre-met too!

Do you wanna hear about it? I won't go too far into detail. I promise!

I ended up pulling about 20 books, 5 of which are signed. Not bad for a 1/2 day. Bridgit and I bumped into each other again. She said she was kicking the BEA's ass with the amount of books she was getting! Way to go, Bridgit!!

At 4pm, we had the pre-met for the Book Blogging Convention. I met quite a few cool people. I saw Erica from Harpercollins again, and I met more Harpercollins employees. (Swoons)

I met two really cool new authors - Teddy Wayne (author of Kapitol) and Justin Kramon (author of Finney). I had a blast talking with them and being plain ole goofey.

I also met a few awesome bloggers - Heather from the Lost Challenge blog, and Rachel from Home Between Pages. They were both lovely!!!

I left feeling so happy that I decided to listen to my evil brain taunting me to go back. Although, my neck, shoulders, and feet are worse for the wear. Ouch!

Tomorrow, Its back to the city one more time for the BBC.... I am going to be sad when this is all over and I have to go back to regular life.

Bridgit | 475 comments Whew! It was a great two days, but an exhausting 2 days. I brought home a dizzying 180+ books - dizzying and backbreaking. There are too many to list individually, but I am very happy with my take. One trend i noticed: Zombies. Good lord. Practically one in five books are about zombies now!

Will post photos of the books in the splurge folder.

It was great hanging out with Lori! She rocks!

So the Book Blogger Convention has come and gone, and I am forced to go back to life as usual. (sigh)

I had such a great time!!! I spent alot of time with Rachael - she is here with us on goodreads, and also blogs at http://homebetweenpages.wordpress.com . She is so friendly and struggles with the same issues I do when it comes to blogging.

I also met Avis, who won one of the copies of The Map of True Places - the book we will be featuring here as a group discussion in June. She blogs at http://shereadsandreads.blogspot.com . It was really cool meeting her.

The Convention itself was so well put together, informative, and interesting. We even got these awesome swag bags filled with goodies!!

I really enjoyed myself and hope they do it again next year.

I will be blogging about it in more detail once I recoup and digest it all!
