My favorite character was Pi, or Ki, I can't remember Tobin's squire name. He was really the only character I warmed up to. He was a funny and lively character. I suffered with him at the end and I can't wait for Tobin to give him lands and glory.Of the supporting characters, I favor Tharin. Probably because he started out like Ki (or Pi).
My favorite had to be Ki, because he was, throughout, the only character who did not lie, did not betray a friendship, and who stayed true to his better nature.Lhel second, because she did the same, in accord with her beliefs, which were presented to adhere to a different set of values.
Elena wrote: "I wouldn't say Ki was the only one that didn't lie. I think Tharin was very truthful and loyal."True - as I thought about this, I realize I overlooked Tharin because his character wasn't given the dimensional presence devoted to Ki. He never stepped out of stereotype enough to leave as much of an impression on me. His fury at Rhius's manipulation didn't burn up the page, but that's an entirely personal impression.
I have pretty high expectations, admittedly - for a supporting role, a right hand man to a king's brother (betrayed) that did carry a vivid role (from a technical stance) might have overtaken the story.
This book had the simplicity of a YA in that respect.
For me, Lhel was the most intriguing character in the book. She had dimension, power, mystery, and compassion. She was willing to suffer to undo or ameliorate the indignity done to the dead twin's spirit. She's independent, and yet has needs. The magic she knows, has given herself to, is described with a richness not given to wizard magic. I so felt for her when she said to Arkoniel, "I thought you were for me." I see that I've switched from past to present tense in my writing of her, expressing subconsciously the bond her character has made on my imagination.
