Dawn | 47 comments Has anyone listened to the I, Claudius or Claudius the God abridgements? I thumbed through AudioFile today and noticed them. I loved the books and wasn't aware they were available on tape. If Derek Jacobi is the narrator, I should have no problem, but how is the abridgement? Is it one of those choppy ones or something where you don't notice parts are gone?

Hi, Dawn.

I haven't listened to either, but I did see an unabridged version of I, Claudius from Blackstone audiobooks. It is 16 hours long and is narrated by Frederick Davidson. Although I love a British accent, I don't particularly care for his voice, but some people love him. Blackstone has this one for sale right now - I saw it online for only $9.99. The Derek Jacobi version (I've seen RAVE reviews for this) is abridged and is 5 hours long. The publisher is CSA Word - a British publisher, but it's available in cd from various online sources. Good luck! Let us know if one of them turns out to be a gem!

Dawn | 47 comments Thanks! I found the Frederick Davidson one online, but so far haven't found samples to see if I like it or not. I'll keep you posted on how they are -- the Derek Jacobi sounds interesting too.

Don Mitchell | 12 comments Audible.com has 3 versions each with different narrators. They allow you to listen to a short sample of each of their recordings. (They add an edition with Nelson Runger as narrator in addition to the 2 you mention.)

Dawn | 47 comments Hi Don,
I took your advice and listened to the samples on Audible.com. Thanks! I didn't know that samples were available so that's definitely going to be useful. I think I like the Nelson Runger unabridged and Derek Jacobi abridgements the best. Now I should get them on sale.

Don Mitchell | 12 comments The Nelson Runger is on sale for $4.95 @ Audible until the 23rd.

Dawn | 47 comments Thanks! Where are you seeing the $4.95 sale? When I look it up, it shows up for $7.49...That would be great to get.

Don Mitchell | 12 comments The top of the page should have an advertisement banner for the $4.95 sale which lists hundreds of recording on sale incl that one. The link I have is
http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/temp...

The direct link for the book is
http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/prod...

you may need to delete the BV_UseBVCookie=Yes& arg.

Dawn | 47 comments Also, is there a way to buy it outright for that price? Something I was reading about Ipods on their site says that's $7.49 a month, and I want to buy the CDs outright, not pay for a rental program. Is the sale price only for "per month" or does it order the CDs? I haven't used Audible.com before.

Don Mitchell | 12 comments I don't pay a monthly subscription and just buy as I go, but I do have a "membership". Not sure if that affects it. Sorry.

Dawn | 47 comments Hmmm...that is interesting when I followed your link http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/templat...
it does have the $4.95 banner pop up...where my page didn't. I'll have to browse and see why. You might be right about the membership, but good to know I can buy without a subscription. Does it cost anything to become a member?

Jill Green | 4 comments I bought the Nelson Runger version from Audible last year. It is very well done and such an entertaining listen.
