to leave orange juice on the counter?
I forgot to put it away last night and it sat out from 10 pm - 5 am. I just drank some anyway.

Would you have?

message 2: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You know what Kevin's going to think when he sees this title.

I wonder about the orange juice thing as well, though. Yes, I would have had some. I do that kind of thing all the time.

message 3: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It would be fine.

In related news,
vanilla protien powder in a glass of OJ tastes like an Orange Julius.

Also,
Someone once told me not to buy/drink the kind of orange juice with calcium added. Why is that? What's wrong with it? Is this a pregnancy thing, or a general bad-idea-jeans thing?

message 7: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yeah? what's up with that?

message 8: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Have you heard that too?

message 9: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I don't like orange juice with pulp in it. Orange juice with pulp is gross.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I love pulp! I'll take yours, RA.

message 11: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments passes the chewy orange juice to Jackie

I used to hate it too, and I would even get out the strainer if my mom bought the "wrong" kind.

But now I've grown to love it, and even consider "extra pulp" to be a treat.

message 13: by Félix (last edited Feb 02, 2010 05:52PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Lots of pulp for me, too. Tropicana preferred. Except in my tequila sunrises. They take no pulp juice only.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It's orangier! :)

Félix (habitseven) Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "It's orangier! :)"

I agree.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I thought the acid in orange juice helped with calcium absorption.
I've heard that you shouldn't drink grapefruit juice if you're on medication, but that's different.

message 17: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i will be in FL thur morning and will drink some gross pulpy OJ in honor of you all. bluh

Also, you might not care but I'll tell you anyway, normally a non-human growing Sal loathes citrus fruit. Can't stand the stuff. Makes the belly ache and the mouth break out in sores.

Pregnant Sal can't get enough citrus. OJ, grapefruit, clementines, lemonade, you name it, I crave it.

message 19: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments that is an easier craving to satisfy than teriyaki chicken at 2am

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That's a hungry baby you're growing there, Sally.

I'd like to make a shout out for clementines, while they're being discussed. Love those! :)

message 21: by Lori (new)

Lori Eeeeeeeew! Pulp, hate pulp!

I grew up on Tropicana but now I'm brand loyal to Minute Maid. Except lately I've been buying organic from Costc0 for a great price!

Sally, where did you hear that? I've told my doctor that I get some of my calcium from OJ and she didn't seem to have a problem with that.

Also, I think bad OJ starts to vinegary and putrid. I've had OJ weeks past the expiration date and it tasted fine.

Wait. Isn't magnesium base? Cause you're supposed to take that with Calcium. Plus Vit D. And K2 which helps the calcium get to your bones instead of just your blood.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
That last part, Lori, that's what my sister (I think it was her) was getting at. She said the vitamin C inhibits the calcium, somewhere, yadda, science talk, I glazed over.

But I'm glad your doc had no problem with it. I'm comforted by that.

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Hate the pulp.

In Italy I had blood orange juice. It really does look like a glass full of blood. Not very appealing visually thopugh it tasted OK.

message 24: by Lori (new)

Lori Hey Sally, I got curious and found this:

Calcium must dissolve in your stomach before it can be absorbed in your intestines and then used by your body. A USP symbol on the label of a calcium supplement means that is it will dissolve in your stomach. If your supplement does not have a USP symbol, you can easily test it to find out if it will dissolve. Simply put the supplement into a glass of clear vinegar. This creates an acidic environment much like that of your stomach. Stir the solution occasionally. If the calcium supplement disintegrates within 30 minutes, it should dissolve in your stomach, too. If the supplement does not completely dissolve, choose an alternative calcium supplement. Be sure to discard the calcium/vinegar solution after the test.

Why did they specifically instruct us to discard the calcium/vinegar solution?

At any rate, it sounds like the calcium dissolves in the OJ, which means it can be absorbed better in your body.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Lori, Mary Kevin and I are right, of course! Please save us the non-chewy orange juice. And Catalina, you can sit at our lunch table, even though you haven't fully committed yet.

I like protein powder, the chocolate kind you get from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. I just had some tonight. I mix it with yogurt. But if you don't have enough yogurt and you just taste the powder part your mouth gets dry and you have to drink a lot of water.

message 32: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments remember the original protein powders? they were first introduced to the masses by joe weider of muscle & fitness fame. the original was mega mass 2000. that stood for 2000 calories per serving. seriously. and you could make it more if you mixed it with some ice cream with your milk. seriously. this was one suggestion. they now have mega mass 4000, which is....you guessed it. 4000 calories per serving.

wow, is this a great indicator of selfishness and gluttony? the intention was to get even bigger and stronger than you currently were. one tub of this feeds a village for days.

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I like less pulp, which is actually a specific kind nowadays. Boy, makes you feel a bit spoiled when they are willing to take just some of the pulp out for you.

OJ, tequila, diet mt dew and a splash of cherry juice. YUM! I call it the Sherrie Special. :)

message 45: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments extra pulpy for me. even though i saw a documentary about orange juice, and i think i know where the pulp comes from.

Félix (habitseven) janine wrote: "extra pulpy for me. even though i saw a documentary about orange juice, and i think i know where the pulp comes from."

Okay now you gotta share that.

message 47: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments well, they throw all the oranges in big machines, on the other side juice comes out, what's left of the oranges is the pulp. at least, that's what i think. so pulp is basically waste, but there's always a way to sell it to someone instead of throwing it out or feeding it to pigs.

message 48: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Big machines impress me a lot more than they should, janine. Does that mean something?
