SJ (sjcanread) Hello there! I've been browsing this group for a few weeks now, but thought I should finally join up and make myself known.

I'm from the UK, and as the little blurb says on my profile I have decided this year to rediscover my love books. A month in and I'm pleased with the progress, and thoroughly enjoying the time I've made to get some reading done.

I don't really have a favourite genre just yet, I'm still discovering my niche. But I tend to like more real life stories as opposed to fantasy type novels. I have to confess I started this months Group Read (The Help) last week. I acquired it from the local library, and thought I better get cracking since it is a pretty weighty book. It has been a great read so far, and I shall share more in the relevant threads once they are up.

Like most people here I imagine, I hope to share some recommendations and enter into some healthy discussion to further enhance my rediscovered fondness for reading.

Kamee (kameem) | 13 comments Hi, welcome.

I haven't been around Goodreads for that long either, though I am enjoying myself browsing books and interacting with people.
Like you, I also haven't found my niche quite yet. I'm mostly open to anything.
I'm not sure if you'd like this book, it's called The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. It was amazing and I loved it, just a suggestion.

We here at TNBBC LOVE to recommend and discuss our favorite books. I know the group threads can be a bit overwhelming - we have SOOO MANY of them! - but please dont let that stop you... everyone here is super friendly and dying to get to know you!

F1Wild Welcome James! What part of the UK? My husband's from there and we lived for several years...and wish we could go back for at least the British GP this summer. I miss the F1 coverage AND the snooker!

SJ (sjcanread) Thanks for the welcome all.

Kamee, Thanks for the recommendation. I shall investigate further but I did notice it won Goodreads Choice Award for Chick Lit. I'm not sure how well I would get on with chick lit, given I'm well not a chick. But maybe I should be brave and give this one a try.

F1Wild, I've lived in a few places in the UK, but currently residing in Cornwall. I'm an big F1 fan too, although not Snooker. You might have noticed I've very recently read Jenson Button's latest book, although I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a big fan of his.

F1Wild James - I'm sure you know the testing began at Valencia this week - I can't wait for the season to start officially. I have serious doubts about USF1, though. :-(((
Although I was happy to see Button win the WDC, I'm certainly not enough of a fan to read his book (not until he's as old as Murray Walker putting out a "career" bio.
Your driver/team?

I was a huge Paul Hunter fan & was totally gutted when he passed away. Now it's hard to find any snooker info here in the USA.

BTW, any racing books to recommend?

message 8: by SJ (new)

SJ (sjcanread) F1Wild, Yep I've been keeping an eye on the testing. More interested in the new liveries than the times right now, but it seems the Ferraris are setting the pace. I've never really had a driver or a team, but do like to cheer on the Brits. This season looks like a cracker in waiting with Alonso at Ferrari, Shumi back, and the the previous two world champions at McLaren. I have heard USF1 are struggling, but I hope they make it onto the grid, I think F1 needs a US presence.

No racing books to recommend I'm afraid. I only follow F1 to be honest. I do have a Alex Zanardi book kicking around somewhere I think, but I've never felt compelled to read it.

F1Wild Alonso is my guy (now that JV is retired), but I read that the 2nd place BMW Saubers were running with lighter fuel loads (60 as opposed to 80 kilos). I would love to cheer for the USF1 team, but I fear they won't even make it to the grid. Plus, Bernie (the little knob, that he is) is backing the Serbian team, Stefan GP, to race. They have no formal entry, but will be testing in Portugal and are sending equipment to Bahrain.

I had met Zanardi quite a few times and really liked him (although he never stopped talking!). He really is a hero, coming back, like he did from on of the most horrific racing accidents ever.

Bhumi | 524 comments Welcome, welcome! You'll love it in this group. We're full of friendly recommedations and lively discussions.

Do you have any recommendations for us?

SJ (sjcanread) F1Wild, Oh No! And there was me thinking we could get along. I'm not a fan of Alonso. His behaviour when Lewis emerged irked me, and I'm not convinced he didn't know anything about the Piquet incident. In all seriousness I don't mind the chap at all, and he is blindingly quick. But you need a villian to boo when you're watching sport sometimes, and Alonso is mine. Sorry.

Bhumi, Thanks for the welcome. I don't have any recommendations as yet. I've only began getting back into books this year, so have only read a handful so far. I'll be sure to let people know when I find a cracker though. I've just finished reading The Help (one of the group reads for this month) and that would probably be my favourite so far.

No need to apologize - Schumi's my go to villian to boo!! I followed Villeneuve to F1 and ever since '97 Jerez Schumacher's been on my H8 list. He was the best driver - at one time, but not any longer. I began following Alonso and after JV left he was my driver. I cheer for the best driver (and was he was able to do with that dog last year was brilliant) and the one who is not afraid to speak his mind. The politics of the sport has been too overblown. It almost seems like Bernie, Max (Spanky), et al. enjoyed keeping F1 in the spotlight by always having a scandal going.
I'd prefer to get back to the sport of open-wheel racing!
