Arlette: To be honest I don’t where the idea to write Behind The Columns came from. Stories just seem to pop into my head when I least expect it. And once they start to form in my head, it’s only a matter of time before I am compelled to write them down. The story takes place in New Orleans in 1846. It is about a young girl, Désirée Bordeaux who is orphaned at a very young age, so she is left to her grandfather who is a heavy drinker and gambler. Also he is not the best grandparent and wants to get Désirée married off so he won’t have to take care of her anymore. Two men are interested in Désirée. One is a very evil, cruel man, Philippi Jaunet who not only lusts after Desiree’s plantation, but also after Désirée.
The other is a handsome, wealthy New Yorker, Lance Van Buren. The only problem is Désirée is in love with another who breaks her heart when he marries someone else. Désirée is terrified to learn her plantation will be put on the auction block to pay her grandfather’s debts. Both Philippi and Lance bid on the plantation. The question is who will out bid the other?
Q 2. Is this your first book?
Arlette: No, this is my second book. My first book A World Of His Own-In The Land Of The Creoles is also set in New Orleans. It’s totally different than this one. In my first book the time is 1809, and the story is about a young man.
Q 3. Why do you think readers will enjoy this book?
Arlette: Well, I hope readers will enjoy this book because it is about a city so many people know little about. As in my first book, the reader will learn more about New Orleans, and its’ history. Also since the story moves up to New York for a short while the reader will learn a few things about that part of the country. Especially about the Patroon System.
Q 4. Are you working on anything else?
Arlette: Yes, I’m writing my fifth book (third about New Orleans). This one is much more difficult because I’m going back to the early to mid seventeen hundreds. As a result I have to do a great deal of research. I had to do a great deal of research with my first Book, but it wasn’t as difficult because it is set at a later date, and I was able to learn a lot from the many books I got from my home town which of course is New Orleans. I’ve also written two books that take place in England around 1814.
Q 5. Where can readers learn more about your book?
Arlette: The book is posted on www.Amazon.com and also on www.barnesandnoble.com. Readers can also go to my personal web site www.arlettegaffrey.com/ and not only learn about the book but also about me. Since this book only came out in early January 2010 there are no reviews but one at this time. But quite a few people have already read it and told me how much they enjoyed it. So hopefully they’ll put their thoughts on Amazon or barnesandnoble.
