Our Vanishing Silent Spaces/Where Do You Go For Quiet?

That's one thing I like about my bike rides - I get out into the rural areas and away from cars. I can hear crickets, and birds, and the wind, and the loudest thing out there is the sound of my pedaling.
here is a weird answer (c'mon sally, you are waiting to jump on this statement) i ride my motorcycle on back roads when i want quiet
Don't hate me, but I never really have a problem finding quiet. I can go into the den in our house in the winter, or most times into the yard in the summer. I have a chair hammock that I use outside. I take a book and a cold drink and I'm good for an hour or two.
That's one of the great things about having a dog that loves to walk in the woods as much as I do, I've found all these wonderfully hidden spots in Seattle and the surrounding area.
That all depends on what you consider "quiet." For me, some place like a babbling brook or a meadow tucked away somewhere isn't "quiet" because I'm actually distracted by noiselessness.
On the other hand, when I'm at the gym, just me and my iPod, I can get lost in the music, my workout and my thoughts.
I can't enjoy "quiet" time without some kind of background noise or music. My wife often tells me she's amazed that I can get lost in a book or a crossword puzzle while laying on the couch, while the TV is on full blast. I can tune out distractions.

Ah, for me the sound of a babbling brook is heaven. And I can't stand background noise or music when I want quiet time with my book! We're opposites, Gus.
I go outside. Seriously. I live in a small town in Oklahoma. Late at night, it's even pretty quiet smack in the middle of town. I do love driving the back roads, though.
I take the old dog and go to the YMCA woods near my house. Usually I am the only person there. This can be a little creepy sometimes, but it's blissfully quiet.
Yeah, I'd go to the Medieval Room at the MET, Bun. And I was going to say the cloisters too, god I loved that place so much. Riverside Park was pretty empty most times too.
There's a corner on the 5th of the campus library that is really quiet...especially on the weekends. since, who does homework on a Saturday. But in the afternoon, the sun comes right in those windows, and it is so pleasant.
OMG, I have quiet places all over! I spent the ENTIRE day yesterday in the house with the dogs, hanging out between the kitchen, the yard, and the living room and den/office area. No music. No tv (we don't have any around here). No movies on the laptop. No radio. Just the sound of the air and the sleet/snow falling. It was sooo nice! :) When my neighbor stopped by to bring me a chicken sandwich (because I gave him some soup and cookies... all made from scratch!), he commented that it was so peaceful around here and he wished he could do the same at his place, but his tv's always on. I told him it's easier than you'd think it would be.
im still a kid so my quiet is found away from talking people soooooo bike rides and my room+book+snack=peace and quiet
I just get out of the house and go for walks for quiet. For me quiet isn't so much the lack of sound/noise (I already don't listen to much on the stereo when I'm home alone because I prefer just to hear my thoughts) but the lack of distractions. So no, Kevin, I don't think your answer is weird. It's more about being solo sometimes, I think.
Be careful of those voices in your head Sally :-).
i went skating again and it was very very quiet on the 10 km route on the gigantic icy snowy lake. only the real fanatics were there. a good opportunity to clear my head.

The Temple of Dendur in its atrium, the Chinese Garden Court, the Frank Lloyd Wright Room, the Greek and Roman statuary wing, all very spacious and quiet."I missed this post! Bun! You just named all of my favorite places in the Met, in order of preference.

What do you think? Where do you go for quiet?
Not my office, today, man. Way too busy.
