Jess | 3721 comments This is actually really depressing lol. I was in BN the other day, looking for a book to read. As some of you may know, my lovely library patrons have been hoarding all the books I've been wanting to read! So I've been going a little stir crazy.

Anyway, I get to the romance section, and then fantasy/sci fi... and realize I've read so many of them. I'm talking, whole shelves, I've read.

I'm starting to wonder, what I will do when I've run out of books!! Anyone else have something happen like that? And then you realize the only books are left are the books you don't want to read. :( It's very scary lol.

message 2: by Amelia (new)

Amelia | 1011 comments YES! Just the other day when I was in B+N. I was lurking around in the Sci-Fi/ Fantasy Romance section and realized...... I've read or have most of these.... WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!? MORE BOOKS NEED TO COME OUT NOW! lol

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow. I'm actually kinda jealous. I have a list of over 800 books I want to read and it keeps growing.

message 4: by Amelia (new)

Amelia | 1011 comments See I have a HUGE list but my B+N doesn't have most of it on it's shelves so walking through the store I can basically point out entire shelves that I've dominated. lol

message 5: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I can feel your pain Jess. I have a book club and we meet in the cafe at B&N. After we finish talking about the books we go out in the store and everyone brings back 1 or 2 books, then we read the covers out loud and vote what the next months book will be. I have a hard time coming up with a book as I walk by all the shelves going "Read that, and that, and that..." You can see where I am heading with this. It is slightly depressing.

message 6: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments OO that's exactly what happens to me!!! I mean, it was really sad, in the romance section, there were ENTIRE columns of shelves I've read. I just think, write faster people, write faster!!!

And then I find myself so desperate for something to read, I'll pick up a random book, and sometimes it's good and sometimes it's terrible.

It's even funnier when my bf is with me, and he picks up books to try and help me find something and I usually say "read it" lol... and then he asks what I haven't read. ::sigh::

message 7: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments It is funny when people in the book club bring back books and I find most of the time half of them I have read and can say what I think of them.

message 8: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I can also go in B&N and do practically whole shelves of "read that and that and that.....", but I'm definitely in no danger of running out of books to read! I have them all over the house and since I like lots of different genres, boredom is not a problem!

message 9: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL. Not me. For every UF/PNR book I read, there's another released.

No, thank God! although just catching up with TBR pile would be great

message 11: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) Our library has this great search feature, where you can see all the books that have been ordered, and reserve them BEFORE THEY EVEN COME OUT! I was so geeked about that. Life is good ;)

Jess | 3721 comments Marisella wrote: "Our library has this great search feature, where you can see all the books that have been ordered, and reserve them BEFORE THEY EVEN COME OUT! I was so geeked about that. Life is good ;)"

I wish my library did that. We have an online system, but you can't reserve a book until they have it. and by the time you get on there, if it's a really popular book, there's already a wait list.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Jess that is exactly how I feel but hubby thinks I`ll never stop finding them,I wish I could use libraries then he`d be happier with the CC bill

message 14: by Starling (new)

Starling | 176 comments This was happening to me until I started here at Goodreads. Now I've got a notebook filled with authors and titles of older books I've never read for the library, and a stack of books on my shelves that I'm not getting to because that notebook keeps getting more and more filled.

I'll admit that going to the bookstore wasn't working for me even before both the used bookstore and the local small (in the mall) Waldenbooks closed down within a week of one another. I'd either buy a book I already had, or couldn't find anything to buy at all even at 30% off.

message 15: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I'm happy to say that I don't worry about not having anything to read. I have over 1400 books in my one bedroom apartment! I read a great variety of things (though nothing non-fiction) and have plenty to choose from. I will admit that it is depressing to shop at Borders and find I own or have read damn near everything worth reading in my favorite categories - romance and paranormal.

message 16: by Betelgeuze (new)

Betelgeuze | 158 comments A familiar problem. I've read a lot of UF and it is becoming hard to find new series/novels that sound interesting. I'm currently looking for UF with male protagonists. The UF genre appears to be dominated by females, both writers and characters.

I'm not as interested in PNR as i am in UF, but sometimes i do read it. The problem i have with PNR is that there is almost no PNR that features same sex relationships.

message 17: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) I've read quite a few with male/male relationships, but almost none with lesbian relationships. I just finished Vampire Thrall: A Novel which was pretty incredible, as well as some ebooks Victorious Star, Lost Star, Obedience Training, Fallen Star. the vampire books by Michael Schiefelbein are verrrry good.

message 18: by Narnies (new)

Narnies I had a problem finding books until I discovered ebooks O_o Holy moses now I've got millions to choose from! Granted there are still some particular authors out there that need to write faster but still. I hate that feeling of "Omgwhatamigonnareadnow!!!!?" I even thought about trying to write my own book for a while to fill in the gap...but that was a bit too optimistic for moi :D

message 19: by Narnies (new)

Narnies P.s - Ebooks make you poor.

message 20: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I am not sure I have run out of books to read as much as I get tired of the genre and it feels like all the books have the same plot. I guess I get burned out or something.

Anyway I definitely agree with Ariana reading e-books helps I have discovered some interesting ones. Plus I am also trying to mix it up a little.

message 21: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah_anne) | 253 comments I guess I was feeling like that before I discovered Goodreads. Now, my to-read list is never ending. I have a few bookstores that I frequent on my lunch break, a few I visit on weekends, and a couple that are close enough if I feel like book shopping near home.

Lately, I've been taking advantage of the fact that most of those stores will allow me to call ahead and request specific books. Then, they magically appear in the bookstore closest to me and earmarked with my name! LOVE it!

Also, a favorite way to find new authors/series is to look up an author websites. They will have links to others writers that they like or that use the same publisher.

Oh, and when someone gives a bad review to a book I loved/liked, I will look up other books that they hated!! :)

Debbie The Book Vixen (goodreadscomdebbiethebookvixen) My shelves are stocked locked and ready to read. Christmas was good to me last year :-) That doesn't mean when I walk into a bookstore I come out empty handed, It seems to be Happening When I go To Wal Mart too, I may need professional help soon :-)

I also can get burned out from a genre. I got a little sick of the uf and pnr areas a few months ago and moved on to contemporary romance, and now i'm back to pnr.

I get tired of UF books a lot faster than others though. I feel like sometimes when you read them back to back every story begins to sound the same.

Right now I'm looking out for YA books in this genre, to try and supplement my lists so I don't burn out so quick.

message 24: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Jess, have you tried any Juliet Marillier books? She writes both adult and YA books, it's kind of like reading a fairy tale/folk story that you've never heard of before.

message 25: by Jess (last edited Feb 09, 2010 05:57PM) (new)

Jess | 3721 comments No I haven't heard of her, but I just added Daughter of the Forest lol!

Thanks Ariana!

message 26: by new_user (new)

new_user Marillier is awesome. :)

message 27: by Narnies (new)

Narnies No problem,Sevenwaters Trilogy were the first books of hers I read. Let me know what you think of them :)

This is one of the reasons I like to mix up my genres. A little science fiction, some romance, some urban fantasy(don't care for pnr these days), a mystery or two (mostly historical mysteries these days, but mix up the periods) and maybe even a historical novel if I can find one that isn't actually a romance novel. I prefer my historical romances to NOT be about real people.

Contemporary novels are a pretty rare thing for me. Even being here on Goodreads I rarely end up reading one except for the occasional mystery set in the current era. I recognized when I was in high school that I preferred to read books that were about something.

message 29: by Jess (last edited Feb 16, 2010 12:48PM) (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Today I realized that another problem I seem to be having is reading books that are actually good. There are more and more books coming out for this genre. As it's becoming more popular authors are either being asked to write books that fit in this genre, or authors are trying to become more popular so they choose to write about something paranormal. Bookshelves are being flooded with PNR/UF and it's hard to wade through the bad ones to find the good ones.

I find that some of the ingenuity and creativeness is being sucked out of the genre and more and more books are sounding the same. Some of them are even becoming repetitious, bordering on plagiarism IMO. Thankfully, there's goodreads to weed out the sucky books, but that's increasingly becoming annoying to me.

Sometimes I'll pick up a book and just think, haven't I read this one? That happened to me today, hence my rant. Okay. Rant over :)

I have to ask now because I am curious, what book was it that you felt like you had already read?

message 31: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Jess, I can kind of relate to what you're talking about. It's usually the same sort of storyline anyway.

message 32: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments The book that I'm reading right now is Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass . It's not a bad book, but it's very reminiscent of Red Kiss (Gods of Midnight, #2) by Deidre Knight . There's an ancient knife and a warrior that comes with it, and now they have to save the world. blah blah.

message 33: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Sounds like they might be good ones to skip.

message 34: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments lol. I didn't mean it to seem they were bad, I enjoyed Red Kiss, and I guess this one isn't bad. But it's getting harder and harder to find unique books.

I guess that's why when I find a really good series that's different I get all hyped up lol.

Speaking of unique, I have Doubleblind here waiting :)

message 35: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Read it!!!

What's it about??? *possible tbr books????*

message 36: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Jess I think you will love this book, it is very heavy on Vel.

Ariana, the book that Jess is talking about, Doubleblind, I think that it is a series that you would like, the first one is Grimspace. These are fun books that are very different from what is out there.

OMG I LOVED IT!!! VEL!! He's my favorite, and I want to know who his human lover that we've met is. I'm dying to know LOL.

message 40: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Dammit. Now I feel like I'm missing out. You're all a bad influence on my wallet!

It's a great series, I suggest trying it!!

I know, I am hoping there will be more about him in the next book. I love how he is quietly there and the friendship with Sirantha really seems genuine.

message 43: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I mix up what I read, too, tho from time to time I'll get on one kick and read several of the same types all in a row. I read a lot of mysteries, UF, YA, the occasional PNR, contemporary fiction and I love pop-culture bios.

message 44: by Anna (last edited Feb 17, 2010 09:37AM) (new)

Anna (stregamari) I just cleared 5 boxes of books out of my bedroom, and still have one full bookshelf in there, as well as books in my closet and drawers! I haven't read most of them, I've just spent the past few years (well, 20) buying books at auctions and library sales, online and at thrift stores. We also have a full bookshelf in each room, kitchen and dining room also, and our florida room is 3 walls of full bookshelves. Houston, I think I have a problems!

message 45: by Bekah (new)

Bekah Denton (bekah_) | 7 comments Im unlucky and lucky that i have a never ending list of tbr books. I just brought 13 on amazon. Ive also been into bookstores and found they only had the , not so good books , in stock. I do have to thank goodreads for helping sort through the sea of novels for the good ones, however ive found that sometimes peoples reviews are totally conflicting with what i thought of the book. I brought sunshine by robin mckinley, on account of the fact that it had received many positive reviews. I then read the book and found it to be extremely poor and i literally found myself thinking was i reading the same thing as them.

message 46: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) Sunshine had a good idea, but it fell flat. It didn't keep me interested.

My 3 bookshelves are full and I've started adding to my kindle. We're going to remodle my basement so that I can make it into a library. I just have to make sure I keep it moisture free. I'll be in heaven once that's done.
I feel like a book a day is making me run out of things to read. I'm glad I have 2 jobs or else I'd be at 3-4 books a day. I'd say that it's sad, but it's better than watching TV.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Since I got my Kindle, no, I don't feel like Ive run out of books. Quite the opposite, in fact, the number of books I have waiting for me now is quite daunting.
