BlueSky No ... were you talking about the audio? I completely missed that ... I gave the book ago. From my library. Unstamped. LOL

message 202: by BlueSky (new)

BlueSky Ahhh ... now I understand! I meant the author's voice, as in the way Mellina chose to tell the story :)

While we are talking about YA, have you read Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder or The Society of S (Ethical Vampire, #1) by Susan Hubbard ?

message 203: by BlueSky (new)

BlueSky Very well written YA fiction :) There are three books in the Study series and three in the Ethical Vampire (Society of S) series ... the third one should be out soon. The vampire tales are quite different from anything I have read before, which was rather refreshing!!

Carmel, the cover artwork is indeed beautiful and in my opinion they match the beautiful stories!! :)

I notice you all mentioning wonderful & great novelists, but tell me who is your favorite poet, these masters of the writen word who condense the same emotion & power of a novel into a short group of stanzas.

Is it Murray, Shapcott, Straun, Beveridge, Dawe, Malouf etc. or traditionalists like Paterson, Lawson, Mackella, Gordon, Gilmore, Kendall etc.

Australian poetry is so admired & read worldwide, yet is still a 'bridesmaid', I know I sound bias, but then, I am a poet.(-:

message 206: by [deleted user] (new)

Awwww!!..thanks Carmel, though I don't think I am in the same league as this lot. (-:

message 207: by [deleted user] (new)

If I knew exactly when my new book 'Out of Australia' would be showing up I would suggest to wait until then, I'm estimating late December, the only other thing is to go to your closest A&R & ask for a t/fer from A&R Cairns of 'Rhymes of Times' to the store near you. The books that Cairns A&R have are the only ones left, I can't afford a re-print as yet as I have invested my money into my new book.

I really like Anthony Lawrence - The Darkwood Aquarium he was from our local area and I particularly liked one about the Hawkesbury river area.

Thank you Cathy

I enjoyed "Peace-ness" & "A Sound for Leaving" http://redroomcompany.org/poet/anthon...

I too was involved in a couple of 'redroom' projects, the biggest being...

Andrea (andreakhost) Favourites are hard - but if I take it on sheer numbers, I have rather a lot of Garth Nix books.

message 211: by Chloe (last edited Dec 15, 2010 10:02PM) (new)

Chloe Arnall For me it can be no other than Tim Winton. Not just because he's a fellow West Aussie but also because his Cloudstreet is the one book i studied at high school that i still love. I am ashamed to say that i'm a little behind on his newer stuff but i have seen enough to endorse him as our finest writer.

Thanks Carmel, that was really interesting! Just checked my library, they haven't got 'Land's Edge.. yet, hopefully they will be able to get it in...:)

Maxine (caffeine_chapters) | 21 comments Tim Winton (for Cloudstreet) and I also have a soft spot for Matt Reilly (for his sheer enthusiasm)...... Peter Carey also.

★ Jess | 3071 comments Ive been meaning to read Tim Winton,Garth Nixand Bryce Courtenay for aaaaaaages.

I need to give Matthew Reilly another go, since ive only read (but didnt enjoy) Hell Island. (Which Reilly book would you suggest, Maxine?)

Ive got Tomorrow, When the War Began and The Dead Of Night by John Marsden on my bookshelf, but have not yet read them. Has any one here read them/got something to say about them?

The complete series of 'Tomorrow when the War Began' are so worth reading! My daughter recommended them to me, and she's not really a reader! I loved the whole series!
I also enjoyed Matthew Reilly's early ones, 'Scarecrow', 'Ice Station', 'Area 7', 'Contest', 'Temple'...I have them all. But his last ones I haven't enjoyed as much. 'Hell Island' was only a short story written for the month long book promotion they have in the stores every year, September I think. It's a gov. initiative, and they get authors to write a book just for the promotion, and if you purchase a book in the 'list' you get the special book for free. Does that make sense?
Also love Bryce Courtenay.....

message 219: by Khenan (new)

Khenan Bragador | 140 comments Haha I loved to read Matthew Reilly a few years ago though after a while i got tired of the "but suddenly" at the start of every paragraph :p. Though a friend told me to read it as a screenplay. I imagine it as a Hollywood action blockbuster..makes his books a better read for me ;)
Now onto the actual topic...i feel quite unpatriotic :( very under read on Aussie authors..can only think of Matt Reilly, Bryce Courtnay (just the Power of One)..and thats about it.. Hopefully my bookshelf's are filled with aussie authors and i just don't know it:P

Mandapanda Khenan wrote: "Hopefully my bookshelf's are filled with aussie authors and i just don't know it:P..."

You're more patriotic than you thought Khenan. Kylie Chan, John Flanagan and Catherine Jinks who are all on your bookshelf are Aussie authors!:)

Brian Kavanagh | 10 comments Oz writers I like: Hal Porter, Di Morrissey, Elizabeth Jolly, Meredith Whitford,Tom Keneally,Rosanne Dingli and I'd have to include Fergus Hume for Mystery of a Hansom Cab, Madame Midas, Miss Mephistopheles and Professor Brankle's Secret.

Some very interesting authors there Brian. I hadn't heard of Fergus Hume, Hal Porter or Meredith Whitford so I've added them to our group bookshelf (and updated their bios on Goodreads). I'm interested in knowing more about Fergus Hume's books. He wrote crime fiction in the later 19th century. What's it like? Can you compare it to Agatha Christie or Arthur Conan Doyle?

The tilted cross (Seal Australian fiction) by Hal Porter The right thing by Hal Porter In an Australian country graveyard and other poems by Hal Porter The Watcher on the Cast Iron Balcony (Uqp Paperbacks) by Hal Porter Treason by Meredith Whitford Shakespeare's Will by Meredith Whitford The Mystery of a Hansom Cab by Fergus Hume (1859-1932) Madame Midas by Fergus Hume Death in Malta by Rosanne Dingli Two Short Stories by Rosanne Dingli

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments Keri Arthur would have to be favourite Australian author so far because I have enjoyed all of her books, Rachael Treasure would probably be second followed by Melina Marchetta, Belinda Alexander and I would have to thank Di Morrissey for Barra Creek and The Valley. There are a few others too but they would be my favourites.

message 224: by Harper (new)

Harper | 23 comments Tim Winton. I fall in love with his every word. He captures coastal Australia so beautifully and succinctly and despite growing up on the east coast, I feel like he grew up with me in my backyard. It is hard for me to tone down the superlatives when I comment on his books as for me they are perfect.

message 226: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (goodreadscomjovo) | 262 comments I love Tim Winton(there was a repeat of a great interview with Kerry O'Brien on TV last night), Geraldine Brooks, John Marsden, Isobelle Carmody, Kim Wilkins, Kate Grenville, Kate Morton, Tom Ronan, Ion Idriess, Juliet Marillier...

message 227: by Maxine (new)

Maxine (caffeine_chapters) | 21 comments At the moment it's a toss up between Tim Winton & Peter Carey.

I loved In the Winter Dark and Cloudstreet by Tim Winton, and Theft and The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey.

Could be - I think it was a repeat of an earlier one, prob 730 report? Was on about 630-7 last night. Sorry I can't be more specific - wasn't paying attention till I heard Tim Winton!

message 229: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (goodreadscomjovo) | 262 comments Yes, it's unbelievable. So much devastation and heartbreak, and it's not ending yet.

message 231: by [deleted user] (new)

Mine would have to be Gabrille Lord writer of the Conspiracy 365 series. There is so much action in them that you can't put the book down.

message 232: by SueM (new)

SueM (4tun8) | 16 comments I have a few Aussie authors that make my all time favourite list (not just Aussie authors) and are auto-buys - they are Keri Arthur, Kylie Chan, and Stephanie Laurens. Other authors I have really enjoyed (though perhaps not every single novel) include Trudi Canavan, Kathryn Fox, Matthew Reilly, Anna Campbell, Cecilia Dart-Thornton, Gary Disher, Denise Rosetti, Jennifer Fallon and Sean Williams. I will always look out for new releases by this latter group of authors but I may not always buy them.

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 86 comments Lucy the Good by Marianne Musgrove

Because I write for children, I read children's books, and my favourite Ausiie author so far would have to be Marianne Musgrove. She wrote the funny book, Lucy The Good. It made me laugh and was really well written.

Love Colleen McCullock and Bryce Courtenay too.

Oh, I forgot, and Chistopher Milne.

message 235: by Tyson (new)

Tyson Adams | 54 comments Favourite Aussie authors....... I have to say that I have not stumbled onto many Aussie authors that I like. I'm not sure if it is the predilection of stores to stock the literature and not the genre releases from Aussies or just that I'm blind to author origins. Matthew Reilly, Tara Moss, Bryce Courtenay are very good. My wife likes a few Aussie fantasy authors as well.

Gabriella (belley) I usually don't notice if a book I'm reading is by an Aussie author so I might have liked a book and missed them in this consideration but I do know Posie Graeme-Evans is an Aussie and I absolutely adored her books! She writes really good Historical Romance.

★ Jess | 3071 comments Okay, so its official now: I edited my 'favorite authors list' here on Goodreads, and I have six.
Only one-Markus Zusak-is an aussie.
However, Scott Westerfeld made the cut, and he lives in Australia for half a year, plus hes on this groups bookshelf.
So out of my six favorite authors, one and a half are Australian :)

Tim Winton, Gail Jones, Peter Carey, Juliet Marillier, MK Hume, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Kim Scott, Banjo Patterson, Miles Franklin, Bryce Courtney, Bill Bryson, Glenda Larke, Markus Zusak, Melina Marchetta, etc etc. Just so hard to pick only one.

Mandapanda Laura wrote: "Bill Bryson???? I thought he was born and raised in my home town, Des Moines, Iowa. Yes, he wrote about Australia, but I thought he lived in England and the US, not Aus."

Yes you're right Laura! I think some people just think he's an Aussie because of the book.;)

message 249: by Maja (new)

Maja | 13 comments we like to adopt people who are really great. Russell Crowe & Keith Urban in technical terms are not Aussies, but we've still adopted them. I also think that Scott Westerfeld is part Aussie, just because he has married an Australian woman and spends 6/12 months in Sydney :p

message 250: by Paul (new)

Paul Phillips I probably won't be too popular here but I can't say one Aussie author strikes me enough to say I have a favourite. Used to like Matthew Reilly but he is now stuck in formula, never been able to read Courtenay (although he's not an Aussie anyway) or Peter Carey. Tara Moss (Canadian by birth) started out well but her last book is a sellout and Kathryn Fox doesn't write enough.
PS. I don't think "naturalised" counts someone as being an Aussie author.
