Edna A few weeks ago I thought it would be neat to organize my bookshelf by color. Unfortunately I couldn't fit everything on it.

Ally72 | 92 comments Edna Lyn...Your bookcase is beautiful and that is a neat idea to do it by color!

message 53: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 380 comments Ummmm....well, I have five 5-shelf bookcases that house a lot of my books, both TBR and some hardcover/trade-size that I've already read. That doesn't include my hubby and kid's shelves either. I also have three under-bed boxes in my guest bedroom/office where I'm currently keeping my PB "keepers" and about a dozen more small boxes and crates with TBR books. Yes, I think I'm obsessed.;-) Maybe if I get my "library" area decluttered soon, I'll post pics.

Too Cute Edna Lyn!!!! Thats so funny! I've never thought of doing that.

message 56: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 392 comments I just bought a bookcase a couple of weeks ago and it's full. I was keeping all my books prior to that in rubbermaid containers and didn't realize how many books I'd obtained. My bookcase looks like Rane's, but has one less shelf. Does anyone else search these pictures to see if they can spot the Kleypas books? *chuckle* I love all the pictures.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Gosh, having been home schooling my kids for... 7 years, I have 2 shelves full of text books that I can no longer use. I'm going to just be strong and move them to rubbermaid containers and into the shed until I can bring myself to be rid of them once and for all. *sigh* It's so hard though... it's... admitting that my babies are growing up. :(

Lynsey A (lovesdarcy) | 29 comments Gorgeous bookshelf, Edna Lyn! How creative! I'm too OCD to do something like that since I want all series books together, etc. :-)

Ok! Go to My books at the top..where all your shelves are listed.

On the left hand side under "add shelf" there is a button to click that says import/export. Click it.

Then on the right hand side it will say "export to a csv file" Click that.

Then you can choose to open it or save it, whichever you want. I saved mine to my flash drive.

Then voila! All of your books that are in goodreads will be in excel with ratings, shelves, reviews, and even page numbers..so if you wanna track how many pages you've read in the month of year, it makes it a little easier.

Let me know if you need help!

Now this is closer to what my shelves look like. Stacking as many as I can and trying to keep them in author groups and semi-alphabetical.

message 71: by Ridley (new)

Ridley I wholeheartedly approve of the Castlevania poster.

We have shelves in every room but the kitchen and they're all different. We have cheap particle board ones, slightly better IKEA ones, an oddball one with squirrel shaped boards forming the sides and a gorgeous antique legal bookcase with glass doors and a skeleton key lock. Switching to ebooks was imperative. We've hit critical mass.

Sometime next month, we're going to line the walls of a door-less closet in the office with shallow bookshelves sized for mass-markets and build in a padded seat to create a little reading nook. I'll have to post a picture of that when it's done.

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments So, do you guys allow yourself a book buying budget? Or how do you feed your habit in this economic climate?

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Bekah wrote: "So, do you guys allow yourself a book buying budget? Or how do you feed your habit in this economic climate?"

I started buying at used book stores and Friends of the Library stores. That saves at least 1/2, sometimes much, much more. I got a few books at the library yesterday for .25 cents each.

message 74: by Bekah, Fellow Kleypasaholic (new)

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments I recently rediscovered the used book store in town. It's fantastic, except the disappointment when you can't find that one book you were hoping was there. My library had a bag sale last month. Fill a bag for $5. It was awesome! I think I got 23-25 books - hardbacks as well.

I'm not using my library anymore - I'm sort of upset with them. They've started charging for almost everything. I know lots of libraries do that, but mine hasn't for so long - and now there seems to be a fee for everything. So - I'm sorta boycotting. We'll see how long my pocketbook can withstand it.

message 75: by KellyJo (new)

KellyJo | 16 comments I will not pay full price for a book.. I always use coupons, gift cards, half price books or the thrift store. I try and go to the thrift store on half price day and get books for .25 For me my books are everything to me. I would rather buy a few books then buy make up or a new outfit. its a give or take but they are my pride and joy..

message 76: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I hadn't thought about the thrift stores, thanks, Kelly!

message 77: by KellyJo (new)

KellyJo | 16 comments I always find so many good books there.. i had been looking for one for over a month and it showed up one day and I screamed.. the lady next to me was just laughing. its so much cheaper than borders or BN.

message 78: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. There's a thrift store by me that sells romance books for $.25, so I convince the clerk that most of the books are romance by reading the back cover to her. I have no shame. :)

message 79: by Bekah, Fellow Kleypasaholic (new)

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments Oh man Barnes and Noble. I love that place, but it's outrageous! I love that place - so many books, and comfy chairs and Starbucks! Ugh...but you buy like 3-4 books and you're walking out with a $30-$50 receipt! I can't do that...so I have to stay away from there...I love the atmosphere, but its nearly impossible not to buy anything - even those great coffee mugs! Curse B&N! :-) I can't believe how much paperbacks are now! Soon they're gonna be $10/piece.

On another note, I did get to buy LK's Tempt Me At Twilight for only $4.99 on special at Target. So keep your eyes out for that. When was the last time a paperback was $4.99???

message 80: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments There's a new book by Beverly Kendall called Sinful Surrender and it's at B&N.com for $4.99 paperback. Might be $4.99 in the stores, too, but it's always sold out so I don't know.

Want to know how bad I am? I'm picking up books for .25 then taking them to the used books store for credit because they still give me 25% of the cover price for credit towards other books. *hangs her head in shame*

message 81: by Ridley (new)

Ridley I've switched almost entirely to ebooks and I buy books by the dozen when Fictionwise has their rebate sales on DRM secured books then use my amassed rebate money to buy epubbed authors when those titles are 30-50% off.

I'd say it comes out to about $3-4 average for the mainstream books and $1.50-2.50 for the epubbed ones. It treats me well.

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments Oh, but thats the other obstacle I need to tackle; Getting rid of books. Currently I'm keeping everything, and I need to quit doing that.

message 84: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I just was "talked to" last night by my husband about all the books I keep. If I don't like them, I resell them or turn them in the used book store but he feels I like too many books. I re-read them if I enjoyed them a lot, read a series and have a break in between books, etc. The problem is he's not a reader so he doesn't understand. Poor me :(

message 85: by Bekah, Fellow Kleypasaholic (last edited Jan 29, 2010 01:19PM) (new)

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments Carolyn - I look at this 3 ways:

1) Yes, we probably all do like too many books. I mean if we like them all or nearly all of them, then when in the world are we ever going to find time to reread them all? Of course that works in your husbands defense. Although, I imagine for you as it is for me, just having all those keepers around does your soul good, yes?

2) Surely there must be something he does that is in excess?? Surely?? Find it, use it! DEFEND YOUR RIGHT TO READ AND OWN BOOKS! :-)

3) You could get rid of him and thereby offer yourself more room to store books and present an open space in your home for any LK Hero of your choice.

(EXCEPT GAGE)

I don't care what any of you women say -- he's mine

message 86: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I've started hooking my husband up with books. He's reading The Bronze Horseman right now and recently finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , The Girl Who Played with Fire and the Mortal Instruments series. He's a very slow reader so I can go through several in the time it takes him to go through 1. Plus, he knows I do everything in my power to get them on sale! Even if it means buying damaged from barnesandnoble.com

Anyway, when he is done with TBH, I'm going to give him Outlander to read.

message 87: by Julianna (last edited Jan 29, 2010 03:13PM) (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 380 comments I got my hubby to read the first four Outlander books many years ago. He didn't absolutely love them, but he did like them and thought they were very well-written. I also got him to read one of my erotic romances a few months back, and he actually liked it too. Totally shocked me. He used to be an avid reader, but lately his reading has dropped off and he's become extremely picky about his reading material. I've made it my mission in life to find something new he'll enjoy. I'm currently trying to talk him into trying the BDB. I think I might be wearing him down.:-)

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments oooh, I like it!! Do you have your books double stacked? I like to avoid doing that...but I don't really have a choice.....

I love seeing everyone's bookshelves. It makes me want to start filling my big one up again.

message 90: by [deleted user] (new)

No, they aren't double stacked...there are a few behine onf the bottom(the wallflowers and Hathaways) which I knew I would read again....they ont eh bottom shelf...but the rest are single... I could tripple stack them probably the shelves are so deep.

The matching shelf to this is full of video games of my sons.

message 91: by Bekah, Fellow Kleypasaholic (new)

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments Ok! I dragged my big one up the stairs and have started filling it up. It's so nice to see all of LK's books lined up and looking pretty on one shelf. When I finish filling it, I may post a pic! Goodreads is so good for my soul. I love 'being' around others who love books/reading as much as I.

I feel your pain. I don't think they will ever understand. I do my best to ignore it...and I'm still buying as many books as I can! I've learned the hard way that if you don't, they go out of print and become hard to find or sellers take advantage of it and mark up the prices outrageously. Besides, I've never heard that books or reading them ever hurt anyone.

How much does your Goodwill charge? Mine charges 1/2 the cover price, or $1 each if you buy more than 5.

message 95: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. $1.00 for PB and $2.47(?) an odd amount for HB. Another Goodwill, charges $.50 for PB. I guess they don't have a set amount for all Goodwills.

message 96: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Carolyn, I was surprised by how much they were asking! That's about the same as a regular used book store.

message 97: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 392 comments Carolyn, I go to thrift stores too. Salvation Army is cheaper by us. The ones around here charge $1.00 for paperback and $2.00 for Hardcover. The Goodwill by us charges $1.00 for paperback also, but between $3.00 to $4.00 for Hardbacks. There is another Goodwill, however, around here that throws the books into a bin and charges less for paperbacks. The books are mostly damaged so I don't go there. Seems you need to check the different stores for prices and quality as well as quantity.

I usually stay away from the hardbacks. So. $.50 to $1.00 is pretty reasonable compared to even the used book stores. Will buy some books on Amazon - they have some listed for a penny but then you've got to add in the $3.99 for P&S. I only go here for books I'm having a hard time finding. This is cheaper than the Borders 30% off coupons I get. My favorite though is the yard sale where I ask while pulling books out, "Will you give me a deal if I buy a lot?" and I usually pay about half what they're asking. I hate saying I'll give you half of what you're asking, just asking for a deal usually gets me a better discount. Can you tell I like a bargain?
