This book was so well written with a plot that reminded me of a Christopher Rice novel. I cannot say enough great things about it.
I absolutely loved this book! It keep me on the edge up until the end. I didn't plan on reading it in one sitting, but once I got started I stayed up until three in the morning to finish! The suspense was wicked and the love story awesome! Not your run-of-the-mill romance books, superbly written. This is one of my favorites!!
I liked this book a lot - the plot and characters were all well crafted, and I agree that I enjoyed that it was more of a suspense than a romance. The only thing I didn't like, and I mentioned this in my review, was that while it was clear that Zathyn did his research, it sometimes seemed like he overexplained the psychological aspects. It was always very interesting but sometimes it didn't seem necessary to moving the plot forward. There were a few places where it started to seem more like a research paper than a novel, but overall it was really engaging.
The thing that really took away from the novel for me, was that there were a couple scenes that were nothing but info dumps. Like the one scene where the two cops are sitting outside Pheonix's apartment and it pretty much just tells you everything that just happened with them rather than showing it. =[
I only managed two chapters over breakfast this morning. So far, I'm enjoying it. I like well-written psychological/crime stories and intense relationships, so this should work for me. :)

Yes, he's a very talented writer. I just wish the editing had been a little better. Still, it's a great story so far and I wish I had the time to read it all in one sitting!
His writing style is excellent but there were a couple things he could've changed to make the book better. Overall though he did a great job on the book. I wonder how long it took him to write it.
Wow, The Slayer's Apprentice blew me away! It frustrated me, made me sad, got me mad, and greatly disturbed me. Since I was busy with school assignments, I only had time to read small chunks at a time. Then I finished the remaining 2/3 in sitting. I love psychology and found the details fascinating, but I would have liked the words to be coming from one of the characters in the story, like maybe the psychiatrist? Phoenix was very well drawn, fascinating, and very complex, as were all the other characters. I had mixed feelings about him throughout the story, most of the time disliking his selfish, deceitful, and manipulative personality, then growing to like him as I started to realize there was much more going on that caused him to behave the way he did. His devotion to Echo was in constant conflict with how he behaved towards others. In spite of his behavior, I never wanted to see Phoenix and Echo separated.
Overall, a great story!
I thought the story ended well for Phoenix and Daniel. How do you feel about their chances at a long-term relationship?
I always assume that the couples in the books I read live happily ever after with zero angst or trouble from then on. :)But I don't know, I think Phoenix probably needs some serious counseling if he's going to have any shot at surviving life.
I think Daniel is the perfect partner to support Phoenix through his therapy and issues. I love them together.
I think that Daniel is exactly what Phoenix needs. He needs someone who will love and care for him no matter what and help him through everything.
There's no question Daniel is the perfect partner, and I do believe he has the patience and strength of character to deal with Phoenix' issues. I'm thinking more of Phoenix, though. Would he be able to adjust to having Daniel in his life full time, along with caring for a child? Would he even still want Daniel after he goes through therapy and recovers from his experiences, or would he try to recover his lost childhood?
Yeah, thats could me a problem since he still has family that want to be in his life. He may want to remove himself of all reminders of his problems, which may include Daniel. The one thing that Daniel has going for him is that he is older and may fill in as a trusted father figure and protector as well as a lover. That will be important to Phoenix, he will need to feel safe.
Say all, Your comments got me interested in this book but when I tried to check it out at amazon.com the link was broken and nothing turned up under Slayer's Aprentice.
A search on the author name Zathyn Priest turned up one book but not this one. Anyone know what's going on?
according to Zathyn's goodreads profile, The Slayer's Apprentice will be available in paperback soon but it looks like right now its only available at Torquere Press. http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.ph...

I don't think there's a print copy available.

I loved this book. I think the thing that I liked most about this was even though it had romance in it, it had a lot of mystery too. It was just some super sweet love story and it wasn't one of those cookie cutter plots either. The author wove an amazingly intricate world and created a suspenseful mystery that kept me guessing.
Has anyone else read this? If so, what did/didn't you like about it?
