smetchie | 4034 comments @Sally: did you nix it because of Twilight?

I just don't want anything that will be really mainstream or common. I was a Sara growing up, one of 28 and my sister, Jennifer, was also one of 38 in her class. I'm shooting for original.
Not hard to say/pronounce/spell but original.

message 103: by Knarik (new)

Knarik Hard task, but a happy one!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I have a friend with twin girls named Dora and Amelia. I love those old fashioned names. They're adorable girls, too.
They used to come to my toddler storytimes, and now, they're six and in kindergarten!

message 105: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
So they were named before the Dora the Explorer phenomenon struck?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments No, after. I guess they weren't thinking about her. And I haven't noticed a lot of Doras out there, so maybe it's not an issue.

message 107: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yes, but that poor kid is going to hear the Dora theme song forever on the playground.

D-d-d-d-d dora! D-d-d-d-dora! Dora Dora Dora The Explorer! She's a super cool explorer Dora!

message 108: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Our Ford Explorer was named Dora.

Also, the last of my grandfather's seven sisters is Dora. She's 98. My father got a call last week from her nursing home that he should go down to Florida to see her because she was dying. When he got there, she said she was doing fabulous, false alarm, but nice to see you, you should come around more often. The nursing home said her recovery was absolutely unexpected, but she just must not have felt like going anywhere yet.

I like the name Dora.

There's always Dorothy if you want to avoid the Explorer bit.

message 109: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Dorothy, yeah, but they live close to Kansas, Sarah.

message 110: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Do Coloradoans feel a neighborly kinship with Kansas?
I think of them as such different places...

message 111: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) From what I've seen, eastern CO is the same as KS -- pure prairie.

message 112: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Hmm....maybe Sally should weigh in on whether she identifies as mountain or prairie?

message 113: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Yeah, where I am is more like Dodge City than Aspen, this is true.

message 114: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "I always think of the Salinger story "To Esme, With Love and Squalor.""

Why did it take me this long to connect that story with the Esme Squalor character in the Lemony Snicket books? Those books are too clever for their own good. And THAT Esme walked around calling everyone "cakesniffer", which is a fabulous insult, considering how bad it sounds and how little it actually says.

message 115: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Or Emerald City.

message 116: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I love the name amelia!

message 117: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I do too. It's one of our top contenders.

message 118: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments It was on my short list at one point. It sounds great with your last name! It is unique but not so obscure that no one can spell or pronounce it.

message 119: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11852 comments Gretchen wrote: "I love the name amelia!"

Ah, yes. One of my favorites.

Actually I'm more partial to Amélie. If you haven't seen the film, you should.

message 120: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments One of my students is named Jordy. I'm not sure what that's short for. But it's a cool name, I think.

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

Jordan

message 122: by Knarik (new)

Knarik I have a classmate - Adrine (ad-ree-neh) (a girl). I think it is a very beautiful name.

I'm starting to freak out about this. No solid name choices yet at all. My friend due in June not only has a name, but has announced it to the world.

message 124: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11852 comments Getting older sucks. I can't remember if I already mentioned that our niece had a baby a couple of weeks ago, and named her Evie.

You've still got plenty of time, and you'll figure it out sooner or later. Do you have a book? Do you need a book?

I have two books, but I feel like they're SO unhelpful. One is full of bizarre names we sometimes tell each other to get a guffaw:The Everything Baby Names Book; Everything you need to know to pick the perfect name for your baby , and the other is full of boring and trendy names:From Aaron to Zoe: 15,000 Great Baby Names

I saw a book Zen is reading that is actually a website I use sometimes, but I get VERY overwhelmed.
I'm trying to use my sister as a resource, but she likes much more unusual names than does Sweeter, so I'm stuck in the middle.

message 128: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments What's on the list right now?

message 129: by Lori (new)

Lori It's OK if you wait to see the baby.

Phil | 11852 comments Sarah Pi wrote: "What's on the list right now?"

Milk, eggs, sugar, apples, baby name, sauerkraut, pineapple...

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I think that might happen Lori.

Girls: Hannah, Leah, Anna, and I like but can't get him to see the glory of Esme, Claudia, and Amelia.

Boys: James, Bradley, Zeke

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I'm really rooting for Amelia, as then if it's a girl we can call her Amy or Lia.

message 133: by Lori (new)

Lori Love the name Anna. If I had a girl that was going to be contender. And the sick reason why? Because years ago I watch General Hospital for awhile and loved Finola Hughes who played Anna!

We had some choices, Sally, nothing definite, but I swear Jake was less than 1 second out of the hatch and I knew he was a Jake. I had this image of a young man with this hat cocked over his brow, and believe it or not, a stogie (which I HATE) jammed in his mouth, plus this very mischievous look on this face. And he has definitely lived up to being a Jake! (No his real name is not Jacob.)

message 134: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I like all your boy names, and Hannah and Leah and Anna and Amelia. My twin nieces are Hannah and Maya, I might add.

And remember that whatever name you choose will in a short while be the name that the baby has always had, and all of this angst will be a distant memory.

Unless you choose a name he/she hates, of course. :)

Maybe you should practice to see which ones sound better when you're yelling the full name to tell your kid that you're NOT Kidding.

I've never met an Anna I didn't like. And I like that the name is a palindrome. I just do.

And 4.12, I like how tactfully you tell me which names you don't like as much. :D

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh and Layla. He's rooting for Layla, but I think it's a bit too close to Marla. But it is cute.

message 137: by Lori (new)

Lori Ha I love Sarah's idea of trying out a name when yelling. And a middle name too, because so many parents use the middle name in addition to the first to get across they REALLY mean business!

I'm nothing if not tactful :)
I just think there's potential for a Claudia to be called Clod at school. That's another good test: try to figure out what the mean kids would twist the name into.

I think Layla is a beautiful name, but someone I know named her child Layla Cecilia and gets nothing but grief for having named her daughter after those particular women of song.

My close friend named her baby Annika last summer...I'm trying not to step on toes.

message 140: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments My husband and i chose 4 that we could both live with. We each had a different fave among the 4. Then we assigned a hair color for each name. That way no one had to give in OR feel they had trampled the other's top choice.

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that James is a great name, no prejudice from me.

message 142: by Lori (new)

Lori BTW Hannah and Emma are incredibly popular names. At least around the time Jake was born. Don't know if that makes a difference.

Is Layla the new popular name?

Simon IS a cool name!

message 143: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I'm trying hard to avoid the popular names, Lori. That's why Emma's not on our list. And Hannah is decreasing in popularity, so I consider it.

message 144: by Lori (new)

Lori Ah. So you've looked at the top names of the past few years, right?

I didn't, and only afterwards found out that Jacob is always in the top 5, and most Jacob's become Jake. Altho I'm not sure I would have changed from Jake, we were considering Js because of my maiden name (Jacobson), and Jake was actually my nickname at summer camp for about 6 years!

message 145: by Misty (new)

Misty | 36 comments Have you considered the middle names of family members? I really liked Belle (my grandmother was Eula Belle, but there was no way I was going with Eula). Once we chose the middle name, we chose a name to go with it. Same with our boy name. Several men in my family have the middle name Nelson; I kind of wanted it for a first name, but we decided it sounded to "grown up" for a baby. Once we chose it for a middle name, though, it really limited our first name choices because of the way the name would or would not roll off the tongue.
