Mary JL (maryjl) | 29 comments ? Depends on the the era. I know of no specific itmes lost. However, for example in the great Chicago fire, or a historical novel set during the San Francisco earthquake--which was followed by a fire--many things no doubt disapeared.

NOt every person them kept a complete list fo what they had. Official records were in boxes--not computers--so old records proably could have been lost.

I repeat, I have no specific historical material on any specific records lost--but you might want to read up on the two events, and see if you can find anything.

Ron Are you thinking major, public things like Amelia Earhart? Or art treasures? Or code books? Ships? Planes? Trains?

Old-Barbarossa US based?
Certainly in Europe many art works went AWOL as looting occurred, records burned during bombing etc.

Ralph Gallagher | 13 comments I'm pretty sure a lot of Iraqi art and antiques went missing when the US invaded there but I don't know any specifics.

Jim (tarnmoor) | 19 comments One thing that went lost during World War II -- but was found and restored much later -- was Hungary's Crown of St. Stephen, first Christian King of Hungary. The U.S. took it and stored it in a warehouse -- and proceeded to forget all about it. Finally, someone found it and restored it to the Hungarian people.

Ron Just like the Ark of the Covenant. (See Raiders of the Lost Ark) Which apparently is still lost in that warehouse in Nevada. ;-)

Well, one famous art item that "went missing" and was rather spectacularly found after the collapse of the Soviet Union, in the basement of the Hermitage, I believe - Heinrich Schliemann's Gold of Troy. The Red Army looted it from Berlin in 1945.

Manuel | 1439 comments The lost treasure of Cortez.

La Noche Triste, The Sad Night

Cortez and his army were trying to escape the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. The Spanish had enraged the Aztecs and they decided to try to evacuate the palace complex that had been there home. Cortez and his army loaded up as much treasure as they could carry on their remaining horses and men.

Unfortunately for Cortez, Tenochtitlan was a very large city located in the middle of a lake. Cortez's headquaters were located over a mile from the nearest causway that lead to the mainland. The Aztecs discovered the Spanish escape and a long running battle ensued. The Aztecs managed to cut off large sections of the causeway and many of the overloaded Spanish men and horses drowned in the canals as they tried to escape. That night Cortez lost over 2/3 of his army and all of the treasure.

500 years later when the Mexico City subway was being built, many wonderful objects were found, but the treasure is still missing.
