Nick, it's a hard book to describe without giving away the plot and I think that the surprise of discovering what the hell is actually going on is part of what's great. It's a real mash-up of genres from historical novel to crime novel to sci-fi.

I found the sci-fi sections the most interesting but not cause I'm into sci-fi. The language used was very inventive which I think gave it more realism.

I think that the theme running through all of the sections is freedom, servitude, slavery. Perhaps that's too simplistic.

Of Mice and Men

Strewth. That was quick (for me). However, the book is only 100 pages long so I thought I would sneak it in so that I made it into double figures at least.

This is the second time I've read this. It's a short book but it packs a powerful story. I still find the ending quite shocking.

Oh, well. only 40 more titles to read in the next couple of weeks. :)

Liz, re: the Cloud Atlas. I would recommend not reading anything about the book before you read it. I came to it completely oblivious to what it's about and it was such an experience to have it unfold.

Hello there. Happy Xmas and New Year. I plan to continue to update this thread as a way of tracking what I've read. Maybe I'll get to 50 books in 5 years. That's it, it's my 5 year plan!

Anyway, currently reading Black Swan Green.
