Annette | 30 comments 2. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

I rushed home from work everyday, read during lunch and stayed up way to late because I just had to get back into this book. There are lots of twists and turns and I am still not sure I "got it all". Setterfield is a true story teller.

Laurie (pinkalpacagmailcom) Oh goody! It's on my list to read this year and now I'm even more excited!

Currently reading that one, and it looks like it's a good one.

michelle (mbsings) The Thirteenth Tale is also on my list and I think you just bumped it up in order of importance. Thanks!

Annette | 30 comments I just finished the Book Thief. I didn't want to read it but my book group is reading it this month. I just did not want to read one more book about the Holocaust so I struggled at first. There were times I wanted to put it down. But the story won we over. Obviously there is a lot of ugliness and cruelty here, but there is a sweetness and yes, there is love. One reviewer said it belongs on the same shelf as The Diary of Anne Frank; he may by right.

Annette | 30 comments #7 Julie and Romeo is a cute story and a very quick read.

Ricardo Rocha (linkinn) | 16 comments I want to read the Book Thief too :( but I'm having a problem, cant find the book in Portuguese stores (did go to 7 big ones), I do have an e-book (English), but my eyes start to burn when I'm reading on the pc or on my android.
Did love the beginning of the book, hopefully I did find a on-line store with the Portuguese version of it, maybe at the end of this month I will buy the book.

Annette | 30 comments #11 I Capture The Castle - Amazing!

Annette | 30 comments I loved La's Orchestra Saves the World. Smith has the gift of drawing us gently into the lives of his characters and we learn about courage, loneliness, fear, optimism and kindness. A wonderful story!

Annette | 30 comments Aunt Dimity Digs In - don't bother

Nothing With Strings - (inside book jacket) "For more than a decade,
Bailey White has delivered a story each Thanksgiving to National Public
Radio's listeners."
This is a collection of those stories. There were a few that could be material for a good book.

Annette | 30 comments The Wisdom of Father Dowling
A collection of 15 Father Dowling mystery short stories. It's a nice leisurely read and there are a few surprises. I haven't read any of the full length novels, but will try one or two after this sampling.

Carol Neman | 469 comments Who wrote the Father Dowling mysteries (just so I know where to look for them in the library)?

message 15: by Annette (new)

Annette | 30 comments Ralph McInery is the author.
I haven't read a full length one yet. Let me know how you like them.

Annette | 30 comments The Angel of Grozny...Orphans of a Forgotten War by Asne Seierstad *****

I'm not sure why I was drawn to this book; it's not what I would generally read. Journalist Asne Seierstad, writes in such a way that I sometimes forgot I was reading a true story. I highly recommend it.

From the inside jacket "A compelling, intimate and often heartbreaking portrait of Chechnya today. The Angel of Grozny is a vivid account of a land's violent history and its ongoing battle for freedom".

Annette | 30 comments I have kept many of the books my children read when they were young and decided on A Wrinkle in Time. I am glad I did. The story is an adventure and the characters are quirky and easy to like. Ultimately it's a story about sacrifice and what we are willing to do for those we love.

Annette | 30 comments Author Jim Sheeler won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in feature writing that eventually led to Final Salute. Major Steve Beck is a casualty notification officer whose job it is to do just that...knock on the doors of families that have lost a loved one in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. You will be moved by the tragic stories of these true heroes and touched by the care and love Major Beck gave to their families.

Annette | 30 comments 25. Bite the Moon by Martha Grimes
I really like 3/4 of this book, but I was disappointed with the ending. I just thought she could have gone in a less obvious direction with the ending.

Annette | 30 comments 26. The Tenderness of Wolves
You'll feel cold and exhausted while reading this book set the wilds of Canada in 1867. There are lots of characters and it was hard at first keeping them straight. At first I didn't care for any of them, but towards the end I gained affection for a few.

I give it 3 stars. I just had to find out what happened. In the end, you wonder what will happen next.

Annette | 30 comments #29 Sarah Plain and Tall is the winner of the 1987 Newberry Award. I enjoyed re-reading this sweet love story.
