Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments Hey, everybody. I’m sorry to say that our family isn’t going to New Orleans after all. We had everything planned and then those plans fell apart for two reasons: my Mom’s schooling to get her teaching certificate back and the tight restrictions on our family budget. Although those are good reasons to cancel a vacation, it doesn’t make it sting any less. Oh well. We can find something fun to do here in Port Orchard for Halloween. For the crew of the WSS, it means I’ll be able to compete in next week’s competition after all. This is the second time in a row I’ve had to back out of a vacation after proudly announcing it and I’m sorry to do that to you guys. But it is what it is and we’ll just have to roll with it.

C. J. Scurria (goodreadscomcj_scurria) | 4483 comments Sorry to hear you didn't go.

Well on the look at the good side. Be glad you never ran into Killer Tomatoes because those things are dangerous (that is if you don't have the special "key" that is needed to defeat them)! ;)

-----

I just had a random experience that is kind of funny. I was playing akinator on their site (anyone know what that is?) and I was trying to get the genie to guess Travis Chase from the Travis Chase Trilogy by Patrick Lee. It never did after I answered MANY of its questions but at least something good came out of it. Its first guess on what I was thinking was the main character of the book Stranger in a Strange Land. I found that title interesting and it's now on my To-Read List.
I know that was random but oh well, haha!

message 2463: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments CJ, I don't know if this qualifies as a Fushigi or not, but earlier this week I made reference to the phrase 'stranger in a strange land', not because of Heinlein's book — which has a great beginning but terrible ending imo — but because it originated in The I Ching translated by Baynes and Reich.

Angie Pangan | 4795 comments I don't know if any members of the WSS live in France, but if any of you do, or have family or friends there, my prayers go out to you. Stay safe.

message 2465: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Yes Angie. Indeed.

message 2466: by Angie (new)

Angie Pangan | 4795 comments In my senior literature class, we've been assigned to read a banned book and write a report on it. Before I start looking through our list, does anyone have any recommendations of banned books that they thought were well written?

message 2467: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Angie, how can you read it if it is banned? Or do you mean books that were once banned?

message 2468: by C. J., Cool yet firm like ice (new)

Yes that definitely qualifies, I think! :D

message 2469: by Angie (new)

Angie Pangan | 4795 comments "Banned books" in quotations. So books that others have attempted to censure.

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments Hey, guys. Does anybody here know what happened to our mod Alex? All of her posts have been deleted and she's been marked as a deleted user here on the threads. It's just not the same without her. :(

message 2471: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments She'll be back soon, mate - just some technical issues. I'm sure she'll appreciate that you care :)

message 2472: by Garrison (new)

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments She's an awesome writer and a sweet person. Of course I care. :)

message 2473: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments I was away and came back to see Al has been deleted! And her posts. Ryan, I hope that the technical glitch is fixable and that her posts return. I see another 'A' is posting and am I safe to guess that that is the same 'A'?

Great to be back, but still busy. Maybe busier, in a way. My employer has given me an early retirement package. My last day is Dec 31 and so it is a bit of a rush to get everything decommissioned and set up.

And now to find another job. :-)

Fun times.

message 2474: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Welcome back, Guy. Yes, you're right on all counts. Unfortunately it looks as if the posts are gone forever :(

Ryan | 5334 comments Merry Christmas all you crazy pirates. Thank you for such a magic year of writing, friendship and fun.

Here's to many more of the same. Take care :)

message 2484: by Garrison (new)

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments I echo those sentiments, Ryan. The prompts this group has provided gave me the creative fuel I needed to write 50 short stories for a sci-fi/fantasy/horror anthology that will eventually be published as "Poison Tongue Tales". Thank you all so much for letting me be a part of this awesome group!

message 2485: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Very poor effort, Garrison - I can't believe you missed two whole weeks!!!

Obviously a joke, make. Outstanding effort is what I meant to say. There should be some kind of award for such devotion to craft. Well done.

Enjoy Christmas with your family, I hope it's happy and safe. Thank you for everything you bring to the group, mate - we're lucky to have you.

Merry Christmas pirates! I wish you all the love and joy in the world :)

Wow, Garrison! Your drive to write stories week after week is such an inspiration. I second Ryan's sentiment--we're blessed to have you in this group :)

Deepak (noobhemingway) | 284 comments Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! I don't think I'll be posting this week because I'm in Orlando with my cousin at Universal Studios. Hope everyone gets to share love with friends and family!
Also, if anyone has suggestions for places to visit for a newbie to Orlando, I'm all ears. :D

It's really nice weather but really humid as well. The humidity is not fun.

Thanks Garrison :D
We went on a few of the Harry Potter rides so far. It was pretty awesome! We tried Hogsmeade and I took a couple of pictures, not as good as Alex though :).

message 2497: by Bailey (new)

Bailey Barbour | 139 comments Hello everyone! I know I've been on a long hiatus away from the entire GoodReads website. But I am back, and I'm trying to return to everything on here as quickly as possible! So with this new year comes new writing from me after being gone for so long!

Also, I have question to ask: What would you all say is the best approach to name and language making in a fantasy genre story? That is the largest obstacle for me to figure out right now before I seriously start writing my fantasy trilogy. I take a lot of inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as Christopher Paolini, but I don't want to copy their languages. But I'm a bit stuck on how to create my own, so any advice or tips from any of you would be very helpful!

Thanks you guys, and have a Happy New Year!

~ Bailey

message 2498: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments First, if you want to create an entire language, you need to find a grammar that works. I started by coming up with a tentative grammar system that would change based on the vocabulary I came up with (and whatever I liked later on that sounded awesome!).

If you just want to come up with a few words, the best approach is to look them up in other languages and come up with your own words. There's also a word generator or two out there that can give you random words. I've used them a couple of times, but usually not for the words I put in.

It would help to know more about what you're looking for because you mentioned following two different types of examples: one with entire languages made up and one, from what I remember, only has a vocabulary.

message 2499: by Bailey (new)

Bailey Barbour | 139 comments Well, I'm open to working on creating an entire set of new languages, however, I think realistically all I need is a way to come up with just words that my characters would say. And to create unique names for characters and cities that match with the language I create.

message 2500: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments So a basic grammar is all that's needed. Do certain words end in the same sound? Do all related words stem from the same root? I have several languages in one kingdom, so I have several mixed names. I take inspiration from many different natural languages, usually Japanese, Latin, Russian, Swahili, Aymara, Inuktitut, Icelandic, and Gaelic because they vary so widely. Gives a better idea on how to structure pretty much everything.
