Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments I see. Well, all the same, that kind of stinks.

message 602: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments I call it reading/writing/daydreaming time.

How far to your B&N?

message 603: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Lol. Okay, true.

A few minutes.

Yes, I do. And they did indeed work common sensibly. I have come to the conclusion the MS Word is actually an alien plant designed to reverse any efficiency gains computers add to word processing. I no longer do ANY writing in Word. Everything I write now starts as plain text, and then I use with the Mac's word processer or Google Documents.

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Hey, Guy, Jung on Cracked.com:

The phenomenon is referred to as Synchronicity in the writings of Carl Jung, and "Oh my God, soooo weird" by the high school friend you just ran into at Starbucks.

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments By the way, the website I linked (and have linked repeatedly) is absurdly dumb. It's a crass comedy website.

And sometimes very adult.

message 607: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Edward, did you send the new week's topics to the group? I didn't get mine if you did. And Al said she didn't get hers either.

message 608: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Oh, whoops. I forgot that step.

message 609: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments And ... wait, I screwed that up ... hold on.

message 610: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Okay, I pasted the same link for stories and poems. I'll have to fix that tomorrow (since I can only broadcast once per day).

message 611: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments No problem. Now I'm outta here. I've manage to give my self some kind of cold. So, to bed I go.

message 613: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments Edward wrote: "That and the way it winds through the suburbs."

It doesn't wind through the suburbs, it's only one city! Actually, it starts winding after NSU which is downtown. The further from downtown, the straighter it is.

Our city's name is Norfolk and it's in Virginia, so how do we get a Norfolk State University...?

message 614: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments I’ve been to Norfolk. My brother-in-law used to be stationed at the Navy base there. They lived in a place called Deep Creek.

message 615: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments I've heard of Deep Creek, but I don't know where it is.

message 616: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments I'm a terrible person to watch television with - especially cop shows. They don't make any sense.

Especially this show "Crossing Jordan". There are so many ridiculous things they think cops can do and forensics often swerve over into the weird (instead of the typical unlikely found on television).

message 617: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Feel better soon, Guy!

message 618: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments Deep Creek is near Virginia Beach. One of the loveliest places I’ve ever been isn’t far from Norfolk--except that you have to go through that underwater tunnel. Have they ever widened it?

message 619: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments It goes under Willoughby Bay.

message 620: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Yeah ... the bridge-tunnels are actually a bit common around here. The most famous on the the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which is over a mile long, dips until the water twice, and has a $12 toll.

I don't know about any of them widening; I have no frame of reference.

message 621: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments They've never been widened, they're still two lanes each way.
There are three bridge-tunnels here: HRBT between Norfolk and Hampton/Newport News, MMBT between Portsmouth and Hampton, and the Chesapeake Bay BT between Virginia Beach and Cape Charles. Then there are the Down town Tunnel between Down town Norfolk and Portsmouth and the Midtown Tunnel between Fort Norfolk and Portsmouth.

Yeah, we got a lot. XD

Deep Creek is Chesapeake which is south of Norfolk. I knew I recognised it.

message 622: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments The Downtown Tunnel was "expanded" in the sense that they added a parrallel tunnel and made the traffic flow in one direction for each.

message 623: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments The one I’m thinking about is the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. That’s the route I took to my sister’s from Williamsburg. What happens when there’s a wreck down there?

message 624: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments I think they stop traffic and back tow trucks in from the other direction.

message 625: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments Yes, when there is a crash they usually stop traffic.

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments I'm starting to worry that my genius friend is just a pompous idiot.

message 628: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Why is that, Edward?

message 629: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments We were discussing record-keeping and security measures. He made two painfully obvious errors:

1) He thought two people being involved in writing/checking transcriptions somehow decreased security in secure files.

2) He believed that someone would take too long to spot accidental switches in languages.

The second one shows a complete lack of common sense (unless you know the language extremely well, the foreign words are going to jump out at you), and the first one is either him not thinking things through or just trying to prove himself right regardless of whether he actually is.

message 630: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Huh. I was going to say.... I'm no expert but I can tell when a word isn't English.

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Here's a poor attempt at making fun of the Avengers movie: http://www.cracked.com/article_19841_...

I usually like these things that make fun of movies - even ones I like - but this is actually kind of sad.

message 632: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments I can't concentrate on it...I LOVED the Avengers movie.

message 633: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Hm, well this parody was funnier upon a second read.

message 634: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments The Avengers? *sighs* I still haven't seen it

message 635: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Oh man, you should!

message 636: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments I shoooouuuldd. But I should also get a job :) No money. And can't get a job til after music camp. Could be a long time before I see it. *sigh* It looks good

message 637: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Oh man, I need a job too...

message 638: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Don't we all.

message 639: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments YES! It's such a pain though, isn't it?? I'll probably start job hunting more once my permit is valid.. Bleck.

message 640: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments I'm so lazy. I haven't even started studying for mine yet. People are like, you don't have your permit yet? You aren't driving? And of course, I'm like *need to go study*.

message 641: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments Hahaha. The permit test was pretty easy for me. But I'm still not signed up for driver's training so I still can't drive :( And if you dopn't mind me asking, if you don't have your permit, how old are you? (thinking you're somewhere near my own age)

message 642: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Oh, hey, I have a permit. I think ... I took some test thingy where they asked me about operating those metal monsters that fly, screeching, down those massive roads at obsene speeds. It was all very baffling, but I passed the test ... and have hardly driven since.

message 643: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments NICE! I'm in desperate need of driving... I'd love to grab the keys and get the hell out of the house for a day.. Or a week.

message 644: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Driving is rather ridiculous, in my opinion. If it were feasable, I would walk everywhere.

message 645: by Stephanie (last edited May 26, 2012 09:31PM) (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Oh, I'm almost eighteen. I don't have to take driver's ed so that's a plus; I just need to get my permit and have my dad teach me.

message 646: by Cheyenne (last edited May 27, 2012 06:20AM) (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments That is a plus. I was thinking of waiting another year too. Then I wouldn't have to take driver's ed. But I'm impatient and want everything ready to go so I can move out the second I turn 18. That plan involves getting a job, a car, and a hearing aid. GOD I wish I had a hearing aid. Do you know how hard it is to pull good grades with hearing loss? Very. *shakes head*

message 647: by M (last edited May 27, 2012 07:38AM) (new)

M | 11617 comments You might find out that a hearing aid wouldn’t help much. When you put on headphones and turn the sound up, can you hear the music clearly?

message 648: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) | 2875 comments Why do you want to move out the second you turn eighteen?

message 649: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments Because I live in a household of seven. End of story. LOL

And really M? I think it would help. I have conductive hearing loss in my left ear. You might know what that is (probably do) but I'll explain anyway for those who don't know. Conductive hearing loss means that the nerve is completely intact, but my eardrum is not. If the eardrum was bypassed, I could hear perfectly. My hearing loss is due to the scar tissue from three surgeries. So, to hear I need the volume turned up. I can't hear quiet noises on the left side. Sometimes I miss normal volume speech even. There are many hearing aids that are designed specifically for conductive hearing loss, so I think having one would help quite a bit. And yes M, I DO have one good ear so I can hear music in headphones. I do prefer it loud though because then I can catch everything.

If I didn't have school, I imagine not having a hearing aid would be fine. My family talks loud enough so I can hear them most of the time. But at school, it's not very effective to meet someone and say "Hey, I have hearing loss so you need to speak up." because they forget anyways. And teachers especially are a hassle. I always tell them at the beginning of the year "Do NOT put me on the right side of the classroom. I have hearing loss. My right ear is good, my left bad. I need to be on the LEFT side of the classroom." Half the time they forget. So mostly I want my hearing aid for school. It would so much easier not having to rely on other people. Choir especially is hard. I love it, I could never quit, but it's SO hard. Sometimes I can't hear the notes my instructor gives us, and singing in tune is difficult enough without nearly every alto singing off pitch. *glares*

message 650: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments I go to my hearing doctor every six months for hearing tests. She says that my hearing loss is slowly but steadily be getting worse. Scary thought.
