What are you reading?
Not necessarily - but as Fantasy is my genre of choice, I have a pretty high bar, and in this instance I couldn't give it above a 3.5 stars.
The author relates emotion really well, and definitely gets the reader emotionally involved (in some form or another), and his use of language is lovely (mini apocalypse aside, I wanted to go live -if not in Pendurra itself- in the village there),but I felt he could have done more with the story - there was so much more potential!

And I would have loved to check out Pendurra, it sounded amazing.

Ironically, the books have very little to do with Norse mythology (or armageddon). But they are fun to read.
The characters are quirky, and entertaining, and the plot isn't half bad. There are a couple of spots that are irksome. But for the most part, I found myself either smirking or out-right grinning at some of the stuff. Plus I was pretty impressed with the various research that the author did.
And damn-it! I want my own Aeslin mice!! :D

Am reading the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher and enjoying it, but I do find the fight scenes a bit too detailed in description.

Ooh! I'm hoping to start these this month!
Lauren: I haven' read her Mira Grant books yet. A friend got them for me a while ago - but I just haven't gotten round to actually reading them yet! *sheepish grin*

Still reading Perdido Street Station - Holy Crap! Mieville likes to make you use your brain! :D
In some places he goes into a little too much detail for me - but I'm quite enjoying the metal exercise!
Also started

At the start I had some trouble with visualization - Google helped locate some amazing art that fixed that right up - and I had that "Aah! - I got you." moment.
I'm not even half way through and I've had at least 2 mind blowing moments;
(view spoiler)
It's definitely a very intriguing world. And I believe I haven't even reached the "main theme" yet!
Both Three Parts Dead& Harrison Squared Look quite interesting!
But I musn't get sidetracked!!
So I've added them to my unofficial (offline) Want to Read list. :D
Definitely want to know your thoughts when you finish.

Just finished On Beauty. Felt like I held my breath through the entire book. One of the few books with a sensible end.

Ok, I definitely need a re-read, I can't remember the Theory of Crisis Energy. So many mind-blowing things in that book though.
Both Three Parts Dead and Harrison Squared are great so far. Three Parts Dead has a very interesting take on magic, where it's kind of like a negotiation with the fabric of the universe (or something). As a result, the most highly skilled "magicians" are essentially lawyers. Which might sound lame, but it's really not.
I'm reading Harrison Squared because it's a prequel to We Are All Completely Fine, which was a bit of a letdown at the end, but had such well-written characters that I didn't hesitate to read more. It looks like you can read Harrison Squared as a standalone though.
Hi Everyone, thank you for this great forum. I have been looking for a book club in East London but to no avail :(, therefore Im so grateful for this :)I am currently reading The Last Winter of Dani LancingThe Last Winter of Dani Lancing, and Big BAd Wolf by James Patterson The Big Bad Wolf. I'm battling to stay interested because recently finished Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris Blackberry Wineand with great books comes the feeling of nothing compares..
So I picked this up this morning. Quite excited for it! :D Nice to read something a bit off the beaten path.

Quite enjoyed that one. The ending is pretty sad in a bittersweet way.

Has anyone read Night of Knives by Ian Esslemont? I was told to read this before starting with Eriksons Malazan series but damn it's a hard read. I can barely get through a page before my mind wonders off to important questions like "why does my cat not like sleeping on the cat beds I buy her?"

I'm reading Lasting Damage by Sophie Hannah, my first Sophie Hannah read. The thriller has me on my toes.
I am currently reading Rebel by Joanne Macgregor. I started last year November but also a new job then so I had to stop reading for a while. I was nearing 3/4 but I started over this week. I could remember the story quite well but thought I'd like to restart anyway
Currently Prosecco and Paparazzi by Celia Kennedy. It is probably my first book in a year that's not by a South African author. Just a fun, chick-lit read so far!
I've just finished reading Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb and have started on Royal Assassin today. It has been a while since a actually enjoyed reading an epic fantasy novel. Have a feeling I will be reading a lot of Robin Hobb novels this year lol.
You must really try to read all the books by Robin Hobb in sequence as this will make it so much more enjoyable.
Annemarie wrote: "You must really try to read all the books by Robin Hobb in sequence as this will make it so much more enjoyable."Thanks Annemarie. Plan on reading it in order. nearly done with book number two again.
I don't read enough Afrikaans, but have recently met somebody at work who enjoys reading and she has recommended quite a few new Afrikaans authors to me. The first one that I tried was Plaasmoord which I highly recommend. It reflects the complexity of South African society beautifully - there is never an easy answer.
Revival Attempt...
I've been reading the following series :
I'm currently reading Queen of Fire.
I really enjoy Anthony Ryan's writing style... sadly, right now, one of his characters is really annoying me!
Jane Yellow Rock
I just finished the 8th book - and while these are an easy read - I'm not entirely sure that I want to continue into the next arc of the story...

Yes, it's part of a Harry Potter themed readathon. First you had the O.W.L.S. and this month you sit the N.E.W.T.S. More info here

It's great fun. The O.W.L.S. made me read more books in a month than I managed in years.

Recently finished reading: The Knife of Never Letting Go, Carrie & Allegiant
I am now currently reading the second book in the Chaos Walking series:

I really wanted to be a Metal Charmer but I'm currently in a reading slump and I don't think I can tackle 12 books in 1 month, so I went with a Mazoologist.
I am currently reading the following books:
Technically I haven't started Storm Front yet, but I am going to be soon.
And after I finish Silverthorn I'm either going to read Ancillary Justice or Rivers of London.

I'm going for Librarian (for obvious reasons and because it's so cool). Depending on how the month goes I might add on some more careers.

What! Add more? I wish I could do that... I'm battling to finish my first one, never mind trying to add on a second.

I think I might've been too ambitious. I need 1 more book then I'm done with Librarian. Curse breaker will need 4 more books, and I doubt I'll manage that in a week.

It's a collection of horror stories about dolls, with photographs from the doll collections of the editor and some of the authors. Dolls freak me out, so I thought I'd enjoy this and it's been good so far. The editor said she specifically wanted to avoid the evil-doll trope, as there are already a ton of great evil-doll stories and it's a bit of a cliche now. So it's got some interesting takes on dolls in horror.
