Lauren Smith Lol, it is ridiculous, I'm behind in all of them, nevermind the discussions that each one involves!

I disagree, it isn't ridiculous Lauren :) I always read at least 2 books at once but most often it is 3 or 4 books. I've even read 5 or 6 books at a time. The funny things is people always ask how I keep the stories straight when I read more than 1 book. But these are most often people who follow multiple soaps a day and they don't have any problems keeping those story lines straight.

You make a valid point Barbara in comparing reading many books with watching tv dramas. Im not sure why I find it difficult to read more than 1 book, although at times I have read at most 2 books. I think its not that I cant do it, but with a book I prefer to concentrate on them alot more than with tv. :-)

Maybe it's because I read a lot of different kind of books. I also read a lot of biographies and trust me you can only read so many pages of a biography a day. especially if it's about some long dead person with all these footnotes and reverences to letters and other books.
But it's also because I have a system. My house has two floors and my bedroom is on the second floor and my living room on the first. So I normally have a book next to my bed because I like to read in bed before I go to sleep. I have a book near my couch for when I want to read during the day. I have a book in the bathroom. We have a bathtub and I like to read in the tub and I have a book in my bag. If I go anywhere I take a bus or train (I don't have a driver's license) and I like to read while I'm travelling. I could read just the one book but I always forget to take it with me going from one room to the next so you could say it's because I'm forgetfull and lazy (once in my bed I don't want to go downstairs again to get my book) that I read multiple books at once.

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) Rereading House of Night and am on book four. It does confuse me a little as to why I like them so much as I consider myself to be fairly intelligent. They are badly written, terribly edited (at least at this stage) and Zoey is incredibly hittable. Oh well. One can't help their addictions!

Hmm, good point about the soaps. I don't watch TV anymore, but when I didn't I could always keep track of multiple story lines. However, book story lines aren't always as distinct, or divided into episodes, and sometimes if I get bored or read when I'm sleepy or distracted I have to backtrack a bit to catch up.
Nevertheless, I can usually keep up with plots. My problem at the moment is paying enough attention and keeping track of enough details to take part in discussions/write a review. If I didn't take notes while reading I'd be lost!

Don't most books have chapters that can be seen as episodes?

message 810: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey there Monique... I like House of Night as well, and I also considder myself as rather intelligent. I think we like it because its easy to read, easy to make up the story as we go, just easy all around, its a book you dont have to analise to much to know whats going on. Its like some people like these really trashy steamy romance novels, their fun to read and imagine yourself as a damsal in distress :)

message 811: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) Niecole, you are right. They really are easy and fun to read. And I sort of can't help loving Aphrodite in all her bitchy glory!

Got a book recc for those of you who like YA paranormal romances. Reading Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey. It is set in New Zealand which makes it extra awesome!

message 812: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool, thanks Monique, I'll go check it out

I know, I love reading books where I can just relax and read... I usually read these at work because it gives me a mini break from work.

message 813: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) Yeah I also struggle getting into the more serious books. I fear that I could absolutely become addicted to those Liars books too. The ones they based a tv show on. It seems like the sort of brain candy I love!

message 814: by [deleted user] (new)

I know what you mean... Its like my brain goes wild and says "Oh yeah, another meaningless book that I can mulch up and not think about..." yet it finds it entertaining non the less :)

message 815: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments There are so many things wrong with House of Night, but yet I couldn't stop reading either. I think I read the first 6 books before calling it quits - and only because the 7th wasn't released yet at at the time.

I don't know what's up with me lately. Seems I've been bogged down in two slow reads in the past week. First was The War of the Flowers and now busy with The Mirror of Her Dreams.

I'm halfway so I don't want to throw in the towel, if only something would start happening!

message 818: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) Hey Crusader, seeing as you hated it so much, can I buy I am Number Four from you? ;)

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) Great! I will pick up Wizard tomorrow when I go back to George. I have Wake with me. I will bring both books to the shop and you can check their condition. Apparently having a potentially broken foot in Prince Albert isn't very good. The hospital borders on scary!

Ok. How'd you manage a potentially broken foot? The hospital is a bit iffy when it comes to needing X-rays and stuff. Aside from that they tend to be decent enough.

message 829: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) I dropped a really big book on it. And I just had a frustrating time finding out xrays only happen on tuesdays and they have no crutches in my size. I sat around in pain for three hours! Did get pills though.

Really liking it so far! Easy, light and funny :)

message 835: by Emma (new)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments I started reading unbroken and it had a promising start, but it kind of got boring and maybe im just not in the mood for this type of book at the moment.

Another book that has been on my TBR List for along time now is George R.R Martins A Game of Thrones. I am really enjoying this book and the fact that it is quite long is not putting me off.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

message 836: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm looking forward to HBO's Game of Thrones series. I'm not a very big fan of epic fantasy novels, but series and movies are different. Plus HBO is amazing - if they're behind it I'm sure it will be awesome.

message 837: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I just finished The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin - slow-paced but excellent, very interesting. A beautiful example of how elegant and philosophical the sci fi genre can be.
Much, much better than A Wizard of Earthsea too!

Still making my slow, slow way through Paradise Lost.

Got Dragonage II, so instead of reading I'm playing it way too much. Subsequently my reading rate has dropped into the 100 page/day mark.

I am busy with Airframe though and will hopefully finish that soon.

message 839: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm sorting out stuff for my move, so not much time to read. However, I'm reading Deadlands by Lily Herne, which is very quick and easy. And although I don't like how short the chapters are (2-4 pages most of the time!) I'll admit that its convenient at the moment.

Sonette | 384 comments I'm so glad to see I'm not the only gamer around here! Finished Final Fantasy 13 a while back and the new Lara Croft a month ago. I like exploration games and games that you have to find stuff and solve puzzles or riddles! Believe they are called quest games. Alas! Things have been so hectic at work these last couple of weeks, I have been dropping into bed exhausted at eight every night or staying up working right through until morning! Forgive me guys! Have not been participating a lot, but am on leave from the 9th of April, then I'll be back in full force! Hehe!

Don't worry about being quite. We all go through hectic periods!

message 846: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments I loved it! Took me weeks to finish the final battle and I still haven't managed to best the Big Cactus, those stupid shielded things and the big dinosaur monster, so I'm still playing every now and then! Are you enjoying it?

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Inspired my Niecole, I managed to find two of my eight textbooks and *shamelessly* added them to my list. I fully intent to rate them 1 star each when I'm done with this semester.

message 849: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Why do you intend to rate them 1 star, maybe you like them? And why should it be shameful to add your textbooks? They are books and you are gonna read them or you have read them so why shouldn't they be added.

message 850: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Agreed! I read MANY textbooks!!! And Journals and academic magazines and periodicals... 100's of them! And some of them are actually interesting and I enjoy them!
