Timelord Iain I like to start low and then increase it when I'm approaching completion... let's you feel ahead most of the time, even if you don't end up reaching your ultimate goal...

We're not quite reading the same quantity of books, but I think my goal started at 100 books last year... then I upped it to 156 (3 books a week)... I never quite made it to my ultimate goal of 182 (a book every other day), but I was close... I think I can make it this next year, since I started increasing the speed of my audiobooks a few weeks ago... we'll see...

And Happy New Year everyone!

Happy New Year to you. I read around 170 books last year. It's easier when you are retired (not to mention too old to enjoy much except reading LOL).

message 37254: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I'm only 30, but I listen to books at work... that accounts for about 50-70% of my reading...

Claudia Ayala (claudia_ayala) | 149 comments To me, things were different. In previous years my goal was to read around 100 - 120 books, but in 2016 –with less time to read–, I almost didn’t make it and felt the pressure (from myself) to do it. That year I completed the challenge on December 31, at 7 pm. So, since last year I decided to lower my goals and now I read and re-read happily and without pressures. Last year I only read 85, 35 more than my Reading Challenge.

Reading shouldn't be stressful... I slumped out on UF/PnR last Christmas, and did 30-40 re-reads this year before shifting genres and getting back to reading new stuff...

Goldingurl | 83 comments i have little time to read it seems these days but i guess you are all right in a way it doesn't matter if i set it high or low i should just enjoy my books so maybe i will keep it at 50 if i make it great if i don't i can always blame my crazy busy life for not letting me any down time lol
I haven't ever listened to a book, people have said to give it a try but i haven't found the time to look into it much where as i have over 2000 books on my pc (e-reader ready)

message 37260: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain Audible, Hoopla, and Overdrive are the main tools for audiobooks, I think... Audible for buying books, and the other 2 through your local library (usually)...

Pokelon | 16 comments With 3 kids and a full time job it's hard for me to find time to read. I read about 30 minutes before going to sleep and a bit more if I have some time to myself in holidays and weekends. I set my goal to 52 last year, but missed it with one book.....I think I'm going to set the same goal this year and see where I get this time. :)

Just finished Brave, not sure yet what I'm going to read next. I'll have a look what you all read the past weeks before deciding.

There is only one more out after this so any suggestions as to what to read next? Has anyone read the Sorceress and Gargoyle series by Lisa Blackwood?

message 37269: by Lauren (last edited Jan 08, 2018 08:09AM) (new)

Lauren Barrett (laurenbarrett) | 4 comments I started reading War and Peace, but it is a mammoth of a book and I don't like being interrupted in the middle of a story for too long, so I might put it down until I have more time to read it all at once. Binge-reading is definitely my preferred way to absorb a story, rather than pieced out over weeks. Might start with Crime and Punishment instead, since it's shorter.

Aside from that, I'm itching to find some good paranormal romance to read in the mean time. What appeals to me the most are books where the paranormal elements are somewhat toned down, if anyone has any suggestion on that front. Nothing wrong with books that go heavy on the paranormal, that's fun too, I just have an itch for the more grounded stuff right now. :)

message 37270: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Knight | 58 comments Happy New Year all!

I'm reading Saving Grace by Julie Garwood , historical romance, not really paranormal, and listening to The Winter Folly by Lulu Taylor , which I'd hoped involved ghosts, b/c that's my thing, but so far it seems mostly historical, but enjoying the Gothic setting and the dual timelines.

Angel | 9 comments I'm currently reading Of Beast and Bonds by N.D. Jones
and A Tangled Web by M.L. Sparrow
to name a few.

message 37272: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I read Hex and the City (Nightside, #4) by Simon R. Green Paths Not Taken (Nightside, #5) by Simon R. Green Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris so far this month... probably the most UF and PNR I've read in a short period of time in 4 months...

In the meantime I've been continuing my SF/Fantasy trend this year: Blood Song (Raven's Shadow, #1) by Anthony Ryan Barrayar (Vorkosigan Saga, #7) by Lois McMaster Bujold Child of the Prophecy (Sevenwaters, #3) by Juliet Marillier Victory of Eagles (Temeraire, #5) by Naomi Novik Gardens of the Moon (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1) by Steven Erikson Homeland (Forgotten Realms The Dark Elf Trilogy, #1; Legend of Drizzt, #1) by R.A. Salvatore

Not UF but just finished Illuminae, it was awesome.

message 37277: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I really liked Illuminae's audioplay adaptation... Gemina wasn't bad, either, altho I knew there were some additions that wouldn't translate to audio in the same way... just waiting for Obsidio...

Kells Earl (neongreencoyote) | 1 comments Currently re-reading the Mercy Thompson series and Then maybe reading The Alpha and Omega series again until I find something else that sparks my interest. Been debating with myself of picking up the Kitty Norville Series since I do at least own and have read the first book a few times but its not really my jam :/ I much prefer Mercy and Alpha and Omega but a few hours at the book store might be fruitful :)

message 37289: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis If you loved Mercy, you should try Jane Yellowrock. I was in a total slump when I finished Mercy ... I tried a bunch of stuff that was only okay until I stumbled upon Jane. They have a lot of similarities ... totally bad ass, skinwalking, Native American heroines who love motor vehicles and get mixed up in some crazy situations ... Jane is a little rougher around the edges than Mercy and a bit darker but the action is non-stop. (I dare you to not fall in love with Beast. ♥♥♥) Soulwood, the JY spin-off, is freaking fantastic, too.

Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter Mercy Blade (Jane Yellowrock, #3) by Faith Hunter Raven Cursed (Jane Yellowrock, #4) by Faith Hunter Death's Rival (Jane Yellowrock, #5) by Faith Hunter Blood Trade (Jane Yellowrock, #6) by Faith Hunter Black Arts (Jane Yellowrock, #7) by Faith Hunter Broken Soul (Jane Yellowrock, #8) by Faith Hunter Dark Heir (Jane Yellowrock, #9) by Faith Hunter Shadow Rites (Jane Yellowrock, #10) by Faith Hunter Cold Reign (Jane Yellowrock, #11) by Faith Hunter Dark Queen (Jane Yellowrock, #12) by Faith Hunter

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments I just finished reading Growing Up Godly by Darinne Paciotte. It's a book about the early years of the life of Hera (the Greek Goddess) and her siblings. It's a terrific book. It doesn't show that I'm reading it, or automatically allow a review that posts to here as well as Amazon, so I wanted to mention it. I really loved the uniqueness of the story, and the characters. Even if you have no knowledge of Greek mythology you will love this story. It is highly relatable, and just a great character read.

Celestine Serengeti Valor The Apprentice, Volume 5 (The Twelve Systems Chronicles, #5) by E.G. Manetti . I just finished the fifth book in this series, and they continue to be excellent. These books are as much fantasy as they are sci-fi, with one of the most complex societies I've seen created. Prepare to be immersed in another world. Start with book one, though: The Cartel The Apprentice, Volume 1 (The Twelve Systems Chronicles, #1) by E.G. Manetti .
