Cathy | 4 comments I've read all the Merry Gentry books and the Anita Blake books. If you gave up on Anita Blake because of all the sex, you can give up on Merry Gentry now. Like Anita Blake, the books become more and more about the sex. Both female protagonists remain tough and independent but both seem to have sex every other page, leaving little space for plot development. The stories and characters in the Gentry books are unique. The sex scenes become pretty unique as well but the plots get thinner. I enjoyed the books because of the unusual characters and great sex. I wish the plots had been more involved.

Hey Demetra, this sounds awesome and right up my alley. But I saw that it's the 4th book in a series. Can I read it as a stand-alone?

I watched this kids movie last night that made me feel the same way. the little fairy fell in love with the ugly goblin king and after they kissed he did not turn into a handsome prince. I was so happy I wanted to cheer. I dunno why but I am just glad the non hot person found love."

What's the kids movie? Sounds great! But back to the book, I was laughing out loud at how Brishen H-A-T-E-D the potatoes and the rest of the human food. And I loved that they each found the other person ugly. No insta-love in terms of physicality and I found that so refreshing and engaging. Total yay for the non-traditional-hottie peeps!

HI Natalie, I loved the Merry Gentry series! It was a little hard to read at first especially if you read the Anita Blake series - sex magic. But once I got into the books I fell in love with the characters - hated a few too! I hope you give the first book a chance and like it!

I binged 1-6 in August, and fit in the others between Buddy Reads... I'm a bit of a fast reader, compared to some people... altho not to everyone, as Goodreads can attest...

There were some big changes in book 3-4 that I really liked, and think made the series better... should be interesting to see what you think when you get there...

I usually don't binge these days... if I stick to the same series for too long, the little character ticks start to annoy me, and can ruin my enjoyment... that's why I'm on pause with the series for a little while at the moment... been reading Vorkosigan Saga (Lois McMaster Bujold) and Nightside (Simon R Green) in between Buddy Reads instead...

Yeah. Even if you like/love a series, it's still good to take a break and read other books before going back to the series. Well - that's how it works for me anyway. I generally hate long series, with 5 books being my limit. That may change in the future though. lol

message 37232: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain Don't look at my shelves then... I've read some real long ones... when I like a series enough, I don't want it to end... when I don't, I like being able to jump ship when a plot arc ends...

Secrets in Death (In Death, #45) by J.D. Robb Immortally Yours (Argeneau #26) by Lynsay Sands Dragonsworn (Dark-Hunter, #28) by Sherrilyn Kenyon , etc...

You are the first one I've seen talk about this series. I love it. It is so different than other PNR series. I find it fascinating and can't wait for the next book to come out.

message 37237: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I guess it's technically sci-fi... but it doesn't really feel like it, except for the opening to book 3 maybe...

I've read just about everything Ilona Andrews has published... reading The Edge kinda paid off when some of the characters came to the Gertrude Hunt Inn in book 2...

I prefer to wait until the book is finished... spreading a book out all year isn't for me... and it gets an editing pass (and in the case of book 3 I think they made the relationship stuff a bit more explicit, which they can't do as much online where anyone can read) before publication...
