SSBSMS | 4 comments Can anyone recommend a book or series that does not end in tragedy or a lot of death? It can be a romance, drama, comedy, action, paranormal, fantasy, or all of the above. Most of the books I've stumbled on lately ended with the death of many characters or a depressing ending instead of on a positive or happy note.

Clara I (claraizz) | 12 comments I just finished reading The Gender End by Bella Forrest, which was #7 in the series of the Gender Games Series, and the final book. It was an amazing ending to a great series. Not paranormal romance, but definitely a fantasy type setting - kind of along the lines of Divergent/Maze Runner/Hunger Games sort of thing. Now I'm about to start Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy #1) by Ilona Andrews - my first book by this author, or author team, I should say. I'm excited, I've heard amazing reviews!

message 36965: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Noblett | 37 comments I might try The Gender End. Is it young adult or is there a bit more romance like new adult?

message 36966: by Clara (new)

Clara I (claraizz) | 12 comments Natalie wrote: "I might try The Gender End. Is it young adult or is there a bit more romance like new adult?"

There is a romance in it, but it isn't the driving plot line, its more of almost a sub plot line, where saving the world is the more dominant plot line, but there is a romance there. Don't expect any explicit sex scenes though, the couple of scenes there are, are not very descriptive. Yet I wouldn't classifly it as young adult because there is a lot of fighting and violence. Of course, I'm no expert at where the lines are drawn, and I'm not really sure what in the world "new adult" is! I'm still trying to figure that one out! It is a great series though.

message 36967: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Noblett | 37 comments That sounds great. I'm not into books where there's a sex scene every chapter but as long as it's along side the main plot then it's fine. I was under the impression that new adult was kind of between young adult and adult?? Like 18-21 year olds as the main characters. I will definitely give these books a read as they sound good. Thanks for sharing!

message 36968: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain New Adult is basically college age... 18-24 I guess... and not very graphic... I tend to avoid YA/NA... I'm not a fan of angst and love triangles

Claudia Ayala (claudia_ayala) | 149 comments I finished Red Havoc Rogue (Red Havoc Panthers, #1) by T.S. Joyce and I wasn't impressed. Then, I read Wildfire (Hidden Legacy, #3) by Ilona Andrews : interesting world, good story, attractive characters, a lot of action and romance... Everything I'm looking for.

I, as expected, enjoy this one very much but, also very sad as this will be the last of the series. RIP Elizabeth Peters.
Now, I will move on to a book from my another favorite author. The Silent (Irin Chronicles, #5) by Elizabeth Hunter

Christy (christy_kennedy) | 184 comments Finished up Wildfire (Hidden Legacy, #3) by Ilona Andrews and what a spectacular addition to this brilliant series! It hit the ground running and did not stop. Lots of curveballs. Ending leaves you really hanging so here's to hoping the authors giving us a fourth and fifth book and possibly so on. Now reading The Silent (Irin Chronicles, #5) by Elizabeth Hunter . So far another great book by Elizabeth Hunter.

Timelord Iain I'm sad there is no new Innkeeper Chronicles this year... or have they done any of the shorter stories they talked about and I just missed the memo?...

I've read/listened to some stuff recently... Wildfire (Hidden Legacy, #3) by Ilona Andrews The Restorer (Graveyard Queen, #1) by Amanda Stevens London Falling by Paul Cornell What Angels Fear (Sebastian St. Cyr, #1) by C.S. Harris The Brotherhood of the Wheel by R.S. Belcher Agatha H. and the Voice of the Castle (Girl Genius Novels, #3) by Phil Foglio Armed & Magical (Raine Benares #2) by Lisa Shearin ... enjoyed all of it a lot except maybe Armed & Magical... and that might just be the narrator... tainted by some audiobooks I listened to her narrate before that I didn't like, I think...

Melissa (templemanmelissa) | 2 comments I'm currently on a Helen Hardt / Louise Bay / Anna Zaires kick. The current book is by Helen Hardt "Sophie's Voice" which is the fourth book in Sex and the Season series. I love every single one of them! Romance, sex, love, handsome men and beautiful women. I was at first skeptical because of the time period it takes place in but that adds so much more to it in my opinion!

Andrew (drewgrigaliunas) | 5 comments Hello, everyone. My name is Drew and I am new to this group. I am looking for a new series to read. I am looking for a paranormal series like that of The Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. I am not looking for that much in the way of sex scenes. The series has to be at least 5 novels but it can be more. Also, it cannot be anything like Twilight series. It needs to have a plot.
Any ideas??

Hi Drew! Welcome! Have you tried Ilona Andrews's stuff? They're my uber favorite authors. (Ilona Andrews is the pen name of a husband wife team.) And the Kate Daniels series is one I would definitely recommend. The books are totally so far from Twilight because the books have an actual storyline. LOL ;p

Anyhoo, book one in the Kate Daniels series is Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews .

message 36987: by Timelord Iain (last edited Aug 08, 2017 07:26PM) (new)

Timelord Iain If you're just looking for great Urban Fantasy series with minimal sex, I would concur with the recommendations above and add Seanan McGuire and Anne Bishop...

Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, #1) by Seanan McGuire Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop

When I start trying to think of series similar to other series, it gets harder, because I can usually only think of series that are basically rip-offs of one another... like Black Dagger Brotherhood vs Midnight Breeds and Breeds vs New Species... basically same general plot, but different authors...

Clara I (claraizz) | 12 comments I finally just started reading the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Loving in so far! I'm on the second book. Think it will take awhile to read through this series, it has a lot of books in it, though they are quick to read because they are so good! :)

message 36989: by Timelord Iain (last edited Aug 09, 2017 05:58AM) (new)

Timelord Iain I was a big fan of the series through Acheron... my love of the series started to wain after that... Styxx was great tho...

Did you read Fantasy Lover?... it's not technically a Dark-Hunter novel, but Julian and Grace are brought in near the very beginning of Night Pleasures, so...

Hi Iain,

You know,
I realized after part way through Night Pleasures, that I had obviously missed reading Fantasy Lover. On Amazon they made it confusing - it looked like there were 2 different Book 1's. They had both Fantasy Lover and Night Pleasers marked as Book 1. So I went with the one that sounded like it was more like a Dark Hunter storyline. It was confusing. After the fact I looked on Goodreads and the had Fantasy Lover marked as book one and Night Pleasure Marked as Book 2. Very odd. But everything else is marked as it should be I think. So anyway I think I'm going to go back and read Fantasy Lover before I get too deep into the series. What do you think, is it worth going back to read? Or should I just continue on?

message 36991: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I don't think you miss too much skipping Fantasy Lover... but Julian isn't going anywhere... he pops up from time to time... especially through to Acheron's book when all the books take place in New Orleans still...

But you may as well read it for completeness... the book is more "traditional" romance with less Urban Fantasy elements... Grace's friend summons a sex slave from a magical book... the book is spent trying to find a way to break the curse and free Julian from the book...

And you want to be using this series list for reading in order: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1533...

Everything Sherrilyn Kenyon writes is connected (to her detriment at this point, in my opinion, since now even Sword of Darkness (Lords of Avalon, #1) by Kinley MacGregor Knight of Darkness (Lords of Avalon, #2) by Kinley MacGregor is part of the mythos thanks to Dragonmark (Dark-Hunter, #26; Dragons Rising, #1; Lords of Avalon, #5) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Dragonbane (Dark-Hunter #25; Lords of Avalon, #4; Were-Hunter, #9, Hellchaser, #6) by Sherrilyn Kenyon )... so you have Fantasy Lover then Dark-Hunters, Dream-Hunters, Were-hunters, Hell-Chasers, then Chronicles of Nick starts sprinkling in (even tho this is a prequel series about Nick the Squire, time-travel is involved and his actions are changing the timeline to save the future... so they should be read in publication order technically starting around book 18... whenever Acheron first comments on a change in the timeline from events experienced in The Dream Hunter (Dark-Hunter #10, Dream-Hunter #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon that only he remembers both versions of)... recently Kenyon started Deadmen Walking (Deadman's Cross, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon trilogy connected to Hellchasers... like I said... everything is connected... and it's led to a bit of a convoluted mythology...

I got a bit sick and tired of how complicated it's all become and quit recently... but the series is great at least through Acheron, and even if you stop at some point after that, you should skip ahead and at least read Styxx...

Debbie M | 50 comments HI Lain,
I love the Dark Hunter series but totally understand where you're coming from in your note above. It is a huge universe & complicated. I usually just go with the flow and try not to get hung up on all the history. Do you like her League series? I love that one too!

Thank you for the series list! I think that will be a big help - it was getting confusing, especially since Goodreads and Amazon seem to have some of them numbered differently! Thank you!

message 36998: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain Even that series list isn't entirely to my liking... as many interconnected series as there are, most of them xx.5 books aren't short stories but full length books... Acheron was like the 22nd story I read... Styxx the 33rd...

message 36999: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain Or maybe I'm just misremembering all of a sudden....... the list is proving me wrong... later on tho, listing books in 5 different series is a bit overkill just because the MCs talk to a Were-hunter or Dream-hunter or Hellchaser for a few minutes
