♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) finished Storm Glass (Glass, #1) by Maria V. Snyder wasn't as good as I had been hoping.

I finally started Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo so far not disappointed!

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments I'm just about to start a new series by Alisa Woods (I've been reading her True Alpha series). This is a dragon series. I love dragons, so I'll let ya'll know if this is a good one. I do like her sex scenes. They are hot without dragging on and on.

This series is beyond fantastic! Brilliantly written and one of the best examples of world building and character development I've ever read. There are NO bad books in this series. Exciting, action-packed, enthralling, humor and excellent dialogue. You won't be disappointed.

Christy (christy_kennedy) | 184 comments Could not finish Vampire Fire (Vampire for Hire, #12) by J.R. Rain . Could not connect to the story and well...blech. Which is sad because I've always loved this series, but I feel the author's writing is getting a bit off. Anyway, now reading Wild Embrace (Psy-Changeling, #15.5) by Nalini Singh and this author can do no wrong.

Amac | 39 comments My TBR list is insane right now. But, I managed to finish the following:

Never Tear Us Apart (Never Tear Us Apart, #1) by Monica Murphy Never Let You Go (Never Tear Us Apart, #2) by Monica Murphy I recommend it. It's awkward at times but that's part of the charm of their story.

The Undoing (Call of Crows, #2) by Shelly Laurenston Meh.

Z (Demonica, #11.7) by Larissa Ione It should have been a full book!

The Darkest Torment (Lords of the Underworld, #12) by Gena Showalter Meh. Waiting for Cameo and Gilly's HEA's

The Angels' Share (The Bourbon Kings, #2) by J.R. Ward Meh. It has good ratings but it's okay. Writing is good, as always. But this read like a rinse/repeat of book 1.

Loving Deviant (Cyborg Seduction, #9) by Laurann Dohner Liked it, kinda saccharine but it's a nice change of pace compared to usual mind games/antagonist games we read in the genre. So glad she wrote another in this series. More cyborg characters means more books to come?

Here are the recent 5 star reads that are not PNR but I recommend them

The Player (The Game Maker, #3) by Kresley Cole & Cold-Hearted Rake (The Ravenels, #1) by Lisa Kleypas

Zoe Banks (zoebanks) | 5 comments I just finished Risk, A Mageri World Novel by Dannika Dark. It takes place in the same world as all her other books and includes mages, vampires, and shifters. I love all her books because of the time she puts into creating interesting and slightly broken characters. It's not huge on the world building side, but all her books are consistent and well written. They are about 2-3 flame sex scenes so if you are looking for something smuttier these books won't cut it. But if you are looking for action, smart characters, light romance and consistency in story layout then these are it!

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments I'm reading Victoria Clapton's Avowal. It's the last in the Priestess and the Warrior series. It is such a great series. I love the characters and the story line. It is a completely unique series. I will review further when I finish the book, but I highly recommend this series. One of the best things about this series is the use of language. It is easy to read, but it doesn't "dumb down" the language as many books do. Language is used beautifully to create mental images of the people and places the story is about. Also, although there is some sex and violence, I would be comfortable recommending these books for older teens (say fourteen and up). The scenes are not overly graphic in a way that would be inappropriate for younger readers. I really appreciate that since I want to encourage young people to love books.

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments I finished Avowal. It was great. It wrapped up the series beautifully. I can't recommend this series highly enough. It's fun to have a series that is completely unique. I also have to give the author kudos for mentioning the t.v. series Firefly. I so loved that series and wish it had not been canceled:) There is so many layers of interest in these books. I can guarantee that there will be something of interest for everybody, whether your taste runs to mythology or current pop culture. I look forward to the next book Victoria Clapton publishes.

Goldingurl,
i'm not sure if u decided what to read next, but if i can be of any help with this comment;
i think Fair Game is the way to go for ur next read. i remember that book being a great surprise in the series. Charles and Anna got closer and the plot in that book was super awesome. I read Dead Ever After and was totally disappointed. the plot was weak and i didn't like that ending. Rev it Up i've never read so i can't give any feedback on that one.
i hope these suggestions give u a better idea on what to read next =D

Christy (christy_kennedy) | 184 comments Finished Defy the Dawn (Midnight Breed, #14) by Lara Adrian a few days ago, and was not as impressed with this book as with her previous books in the series. The lead female was irritating and whiny and I felt the book lacked cohesion. Not enough smooth flow for a story. Now I'm reading The Demon King (The Kings, #9) by Heather Killough-Walden . Love this series.

message 36400: by Tory (last edited Sep 21, 2016 03:51PM) (new)

Tory Palmer | 10 comments Working on Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie. I have a rule, that I don't read the genre I'm currently writing in, so right now I'm with Fantasy instead of PNR or Urban Fantasy.

Over all, pretty good, if you like your fantasy grittier than normal. I grew up on J. R. R. Tolkien, the Dragonlance books, and Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, but grew out of them eventually (shocker, I know!). So, it's a nice change of pace from the old Sword & Sorcery I'm used to.

Abercrombie definitely keeps a better pace than someone like George R. R. Martin, mainly because you're dealing with only four or so revolving points-of-view. Rather than having five sets of eyes focused on each skirmish, he keeps it to one. He even glosses over whole, unimportant ones by using letters to superiors. Which is great! Also, you don't have to sit through descriptions of meals, or songs. Which, I guess is your loss if you're into that kind of thing.

Over all, I've been pretty happy with it (read over 125 pages last night), but I do have one big complaint: No strong female characters. I just came off reading several books that all passed the Bechdel test with flying colors, and the fact that I'm reading about five male main characters, and one female main character (who has zero traditional female characteristics), is so irritating that I remember why I put the book down in the first place.

But, of course, I'm glad I DID pick it back up, because it's still a good yarn.
