Gems (zadien) | 134 comments That's something I can't seem to get my head around - I dunno what it is but something about the plot or the blurb put me off.

I'm reading the Hunger Games since the book was in the bookshop and it's been getting a lot of hype.

Yes, "she" is how you pronounce "sidhe". In the books I got from the library, there was a pronunciation guide in the back. there was also one in the back of the Fever series books by Moning Karen Marie--a lot of the same Irish words are in both series. If you read the Fever series--one I had trouble with b/4 I realized there was a guide in the back was "Sinsar Dubh"--it is pronounced like "She-suh Doo". Since that w word is on just about every page, it was nice to know the proper way to say it :-)

Hmm, She-suh Doo is not how I would pronounce it - I mean we don't just delete an N, because N exists in the language. Sin is always Shin and so I would have thought it would be pronounced ShinShar Duv (Only because in Donegal, it's pronounced with a v, Dublin is probably different) but the Sinsar is a very weird pronounciation. Could anyone tell me the meaning of the word since I haven't come across it before.

Gems--I looked at your profile and you are the one from Ireland, so I would think you would be a better judge of the proper way to pronounce Irish words than me--since I was raised a Southern Belle in the USA. :-)

From the way the word was spelled I was pronouncing it "Sin-sar Dub" until I discovered the glossary in the book. Have you read that series?

The Sinsar Dubh is basically an ancient magical book (in the Fever series) written in an ancient language. It is said to hold the deadliest of all magic.

FlibBityFLooB Gems - thank you for your help. I never know what words are fantasy and which are real in these sorts of books :)

Cherra -- the book I have doesn't have a pronunciation guide. I feel cheated! hehe :)

I have the Fever books on my tbr list. I'm sure I'll struggle with those, and it will be a lot of turning to my husband and saying "How would you pronounce that?". I'll look for the guide in the back of those when I start them.

Gems (zadien) | 134 comments Books set in Ireland are generally using Irish words and it's this new fad that everyone's getting into. It's kind of clever but I'm worried about where they're getting their language translated because some words generally don't suit where they're put but then again, I've only been taught Donegal Irish and I know Galway and the rest of Ireland speaks it different.

I haven't read the Fever series yet, I'm waiting for the last book because everyone was saying it was really good but the cliff hangers were awful and so I thought to myself, just wait. If you don't know what you're missing, you can't miss it; so I'm holding out till the fifth book.

Sin é is "that's it" and it's pronounced Shin Eh - so technically, Sin should she Shin and Sar should be Shar... merely because it's too weird to pronounce sar after Shin... Sorry this is bugging me now, lol. Fourteen years of Irish means I'm by no means fluent in the language but I'm really curious now. I think when I get the book, I'll just pronounce the words my way. But Dubh is probably pronounced Doo by the Dubliners, they have that different accent.

However, since you say an Ancient language, that doesn't necessarily mean it's Irish (though Dubh is Black in Irish) so the glossary is probably right. Hmm.

Levi--Personally, I did not like Swoon--I had to force myself to finish it just to see if the ending justified the torture I had to endure while reading it. I gave it 1 star--and I have been pretty generous with my stars. I have just recently started to rate books on a tougher scale. I may actually go back and change some of my older ratings when I was feeling too generous.

Yes Tina, I was too generous b/c I didn't want to totally trash their high rating with a low rating. Sometimes I look at books I have read and how I rated them and think--what was I thinking. I need to go back and make a few adjustments.

message 3310: by Tina (new)

Tina | 130 comments Cherra - I'd read a slow and boring book with an amazing ending. Then rate it according to how I feel after I've read it. Then I was realizing I was giving high stars to books that only had 10-20 pages of good reading.

I ♥ Bookie Nookie (bookienookiereviews.blogspot.com) (ibookienookie) I am currently reading Slave to Sensation--it is pretty good. I was wondering, does anyone know if these books should be read in order or are they stand alone stories that make up the series? Also some of the books (like #4 and #7) seem to be missing from the GR database--they are not even on her author page. I looked up the order on her site and this is what I found:

Psy/Changeling Series

1. Slave to Sensation (September 2006)
2. Visions of Heat (March 2007)
Free short story: The Cannibal Princess
3. Caressed By Ice (September 2007)
4. “Beat of Temptation” in An Enchanted Season (October 2007)*
5. Mine to Possess (February 2008)
6. Hostage to Pleasure (September 2008)
7. “Stroke of Enticement” in The Magical Christmas Cat (October 2008) *
Free short story: A Gift for Kit
8. Branded by Fire (July 2009)
9. Blaze of Memory (November 2009)

Can anyone help?

I love this series, and definitely think they should be read in order. As the series progresses main characters from previous books reappear. Each book builds on the last book. I think they're leading up to some major "something I don't know what it is yet moment". The ones you have starred as books 4 and 7 must be short stories I think. On Amazon, book 4 is listed as Mine to Possess, and 7 is Branded by Fire. I think the others must be short stories or novellas.

message 3313: by Gems (last edited Sep 20, 2009 10:58AM) (new)

Gems (zadien) | 134 comments Yes, they have to be read in order because everything - the plot - is connected and if you read out of order you're spoiled because you'll know who's a bad guy, who's dead etc and that ruins a story I find.

Ok as for Beat of Temptation and Stroke of Enticement - they're not necessary plot wise but I get the anthology's because those stories are just good. But they can be read out of order because I read the first four (beat of temptation isn't really four, Mine to Possess is four and Branded by Fire is seven (the other two are stories that were published between the series, if that makes sense).

I ♥ Bookie Nookie (bookienookiereviews.blogspot.com) (ibookienookie) ok--thanks guys! I was confused because on the authors GR site, there is no 4 or 7 Psy-changling book at all and I thought that was strange. All cleared up now-thanks!

Cherra, I've noticed that the GR site will sometimes list novellas/short stories as part of the series where as others sites don't sometimes throwing the numbering off. I'm glad you like Slave to Sensation so far. I love this series and keep trying to get everybody to read this series.

I actually just re-numbered this series yesterday on here. If you look at the author's site she does list the short stories as being part of the series and they fall in a particular order. Check out the order here. You'll notice that even though Mine to Possess is the 4th full book in the series, the author lists it as #5. Normally I'll list novellas and short stories as being a .5, or in between books, but if the author lists them as an actual number then I'll follow what's on their site - it is their series after all! And if you look at the two books in question, An Enchanted Season and The Magical Christmas Cat, on the pages for the books at the top you can see where they fall in the series.

Another author that does this is Meljean Brook, she includes all her short stories as part of the main story arc. Honestly, I think this makes things easier when they list them on their site like this. Half the time I can't tell where a short story falls or what series it's even a part of.

Hope that clears the numbering up a bit!

Also, I don't know if you're missing it, but an author's GR site only lists the top 10 of their most popular books. If you look just above the books, you should see this:

avg rating: 4.17 | 3,944 ratings | 590 reviews | 26 distinct works | 150 fans

If you click on the link that says 26 distinct works then you'll pull up their whole catalog. I know it's hard to see, the text is so small and it's easy to miss. But you'll see #4 and #7 on that page because the aren't as popular as the other full novels.

Tara | 596 comments I'm currently reading I Only Have Fangs For You by Kathy Love. It's the 3rd book in her Young Brothers series. It's not bad, just light and well, a little predictable. But I just finished the entire Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and I'm waiting for Dark Lover by J.R. Ward to be returned to my library so I can start that series.

I'm so behind on all the good series, because I had strayed from romance novels and all types of fantasy novels for a long time. I just came back to romance last year and sort of fell into PNR. Needless to say, I have a lot of catching up to do, so I am looking for any and all suggestions.

Destined for an Early Grave is the 4th book in the Night Huntress Series. I am such a doofus--I didn't realize it was in paperback and I have been waiting for it from the library this whole time! The bright side is that if I had known that, I would have already read it and would not have the pleasure of the anticipation I have right now!

April & Oliver A Novel is a novel about childhood friends who always had sexual tension they never acted upon. Now they have grown up and gone separate ways. Then a tragedy brings them back together. Oliver is on the road to success and April is on the road to nowhere. Oliver is newly engaged and April is in a totally effed up relationship. There are of course, secrets to uncover and old wounds to open...Will they end up together? I don't know, I am only on page 102.

Desiree, I read the fever series and its one of my favorites. I know what you mean about wanting a tad bit more romance, but its coming, sort of. Well, maybe not romance, but the sexual tension for sure, and something I can't quite put a name on. I hope that makes sense. For me, the ending of each book had me rushing out to buy the next one. I think the action picks up with every book. I believe someone here recommended also reading Moning's Highlander series as the later books answer some of the questions that arise during the Fever series. I haven't read those yet but I plan to. Hope that helps.

Ana (smackdownqueen) | 22 comments Hey!

Does anyone happen to know the author and/or title for an PNR romance which involved a werewolf, a fox, and a vampire. The fox (heroine)shapeshifer is being chased by the Vampire and she is from Tenneessee. It seems that female character has some fae blood as well and the Vamp is interested in tapping into the sweet and powerful blood of the female character (shape shifting fox). The heroine runs into the Alpha werewolf automoble repair shop and seeking the assistance of the were with the would be stalker who happens to the Vampire (which it is always the case with those vampires). The Alpha werewolf steps in and intervenes on the situation regarding the Vamp and the fox. The gist is that were states that heroine (the fox) is his lady and the vamp needs step down and off. The vamp is not buying it and is contempting going a fight with were over the lady. The vamp think twice about the fight and then is impressing that they prove the relationship by some type of committment.

I saw the storyline when I was checking out what to read next on the internet. Now, I can not remember the author, the title, or website that I saw the synopsis. This is a long shot...please help me out if you can.
