What are you reading right now?

To some extent I agree, but most authors put a spin on it. Also, vampires, shifters, demons are one thing, but genetically altered humans is pretty specific. Even then, their traits are exactly the same. She could have changed it up a bit.
If I wrote a book about a teenage couple who met in high school and fell in love, only to find out the guy is a vampire. Not just that he's a vampire but a good one who doesn't hunt humans, instead he and his family only hunt animals. They are also different than most vamps because they can go out in the sun but they sparkle. If I wrote that book but instead of Edward and Bella they had different characters, people would get angry because it's a blatant copy of another book.
That's how close New Species is to Breeds. Almost everything is the same.

I see your point PA but you have to admit...there are an awful lot of copy cats out there for every popular series....don't ya think? And what do they say? Mimicking something is the sincerest form of flattery?

I agree. One of the reason I don't have a problem with fanfiction is for that very reason, and the fact that they credit the author that they are imitating. I think my main issue here is that there are so many similarities she should give credit where credit is due. I think she should have put some form of acknowledgement in for Lora Leigh.
And like I said, I like the book, I just can't help but think about it though.

I hear ya~
I had not read the Breeds series...even thought I bought a few of them...lol I finished NS and started reading Breeds just because I loved NS so much. I like them both.

I think one series about alpha hot genetically changed humans and pages and pages of smut is enough. (Not complaining though!)LOL.

i like Breeds but there are a few duds in the series. My favorite was

I do like the concept a lot. And I think despite what I said above, people who like LL but wish it had less sex in it will like New Species better. There is more story and less sex than in Breeds. She has basically laid out the whole concept in the first book. LL didn't have time in Breeds to get it all out in one book, the characters were way to busy having lots and lots of hot animal sex to lay out the concept.

I read a few of the breeds and honestly I was able to get into NS a lot more then I was the Breeds. I mean I may need to read a few more but I was hooked on NS by the first books... Need to get the rest now lol

It is more than similar Lisa
(view spoiler)

By the way, can someone tell me how you do the hide spoiler thing? I'm a bit tech challenged.

Butting into the conversation here, I hope you guys don't mind... I actually haven't read either one of the series, but your description immediately made me remember several series... The whole humans with animal DNA sounds a lot like the TV show Dark Angel, enhanced smell is used in basically every were/shifter book, same goes for mating, and the biting and penis swelling thing is more or less an animal thing... My point is, it's all been done before. There's hardly anything new, so for me it's the characters that count. If they draw me in, I won't care much if the world building is creative or not.
Oh and I'm pretty sure that if an author would aknowledge that their books are heavily influenced by the works of another author, it would become a copy right matter. No publisher would allow that.

I bought Bared to You on Monday. I have not read yet but will this weekend. I have to finish the Scanguard series first.

PsyChangling is also one of my favorite series. I have not been disappointed. Once I started reading, I had to read them all. Hawk is my favorite but Judd is a close second.

Kiss of Snow was my favorite book last year. I have reread and I still fall in love with Hawke. The chemistry between he and Sienna was so clear from the first time he saw her. The side stories are also wonderful. This author has a way of keeping the stories fresh and new things happening that suck you in. She is a great storyteller.

HOLY SHIT is perfect. I actually had to put it down after..."
You girls are making me really nervous....

And /spoiler after what you want to hide
And add a < before each spoiler and /spoiler then a > at the end of the word spoiler

Wow, you are fast.

Wow, you are fast."
When you have nothing but free time on your hands (Job search mode) and don't watch much TV you can't read a book or two a day lol

Yeah, Abby, I see your point. I just stick with the Breeds because i don't want to start another series with such a similar theme for now.

That is too bad Lisa because you are missing out on a pretty darn good series. I see the similarity but think they are different enough to enjoy both.
I like BDB, but I also like Midnight breed series too...They are very similar as well but different. And I enjoy both.

Totally agree with Lisa. I loved it and gave it 5 stars bc the plot and the characters left me emotionally wretched.

Exactly... Though to be honest I haven't been able to really get into the last few BDB books... I dunno maybe it's the mood I'm in when I go to read them who knows lol... I really don't think there's a series within the same genre that you'll find uniquely different from another...

We should open up a thread in here where we can compare similar series and make lists of what we think are similar I bet there are alot of them.

That's actually a good idea... I read the first book of the DH and it's apparently similar to those of the LOTU in regards to the mythology... Charley davidson could be compared to Alex craft with the whole being able to communicate and see the departed.... It's definitely a good idea though

And in about 5 minutes, I'm going to start reading

Next up is

I loved Shadowflame. What happened that had many people upset was heart wrenching, true. But I felt it was also a brave way for the author to deal with a past love that was as intense as this one had been, rather than the easy out we usually see. How often do you read a book where the old flame returns only to have our hero (or heroine as the case may be) realize that the person they've been mooning over for years is really a jerk and they don't know what they ever saw in them. Or they suddenly realize that what they feel is affection, but no more than friendship. Or they kiss and realize the spark is no longer there? Doesn't that get old? And how realistic is it really? When you've been in an intense relationship with someone for ten years and that relationship ends, against both your wishes, and you never had any closure about it there are going to be a lot of lingering, intense feelings. I was shocked the author went where she did with it, but also commend her for not backing down and giving the characters an easy out. It made for a much more emotional read and now these characters are going to have to work harder for their happily ever after.
I don't think the above is really a spoiler, but if anyone thinks so, let me know and I'll hide it.

Great series! I cried like a baby at the end of book three.

omgosh... just reading the reviews come alive in flames was entertaining enough this morning. Goodness gracious, people are livid about this one. It makes me chuckle into my coffee...

I'm finishing

Too many books to read!! I really want to read First Grave on the Right as well..

Love love LOVE that series!!! Not sure how I'll be able to wait until October for the next one lol

I read one recently where they kept getting interrupted and I was like, "Come on already!" Haha!

Oh! It sounds fun! Kind of like a more personal discussion as opposed to the normal discussion with everyone?

I agree that they are similar. They have one major difference though. NS is 80% story and 20% sex, the breeds are the exact opposite. I also can think of some plot differences that make NS more enjoyable for me to read. At any rate that old saying "there's nothing new under the sun" counts for both here.

I'd enjoy a comparison thread as well. So many are similar in a lot of ways.

I agree with your take there. Especially the first 7 Breeds books, she had a different publisher and it was way more sex. I agree people could like NS better and I can see why, I just think she should have changed it up a bit more.
