To some extent I agree, but most authors put a spin on it. Also, vampires, shifters, demons are one thing, but genetically altered humans is pretty specific. Even then, their traits are exactly the same. She could have changed it up a bit.

If I wrote a book about a teenage couple who met in high school and fell in love, only to find out the guy is a vampire. Not just that he's a vampire but a good one who doesn't hunt humans, instead he and his family only hunt animals. They are also different than most vamps because they can go out in the sun but they sparkle. If I wrote that book but instead of Edward and Bella they had different characters, people would get angry because it's a blatant copy of another book.

That's how close New Species is to Breeds. Almost everything is the same.

I agree. One of the reason I don't have a problem with fanfiction is for that very reason, and the fact that they credit the author that they are imitating. I think my main issue here is that there are so many similarities she should give credit where credit is due. I think she should have put some form of acknowledgement in for Lora Leigh.

And like I said, I like the book, I just can't help but think about it though.

I had not read the Breeds series...even thought I bought a few of them...lol I finished NS and started reading Breeds just because I loved NS so much. I like them both.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 407 comments Lora Leigh's breeds series is one of my "guilty pleasures". That's one of the reasons I haven't started reading the New Species series as a lot of readers have commented on its similarities.

I think one series about alpha hot genetically changed humans and pages and pages of smut is enough. (Not complaining though!)LOL.

i like Breeds but there are a few duds in the series. My favorite was Elizabeth's Wolf (Breeds, #3) by Lora Leigh

I do like the concept a lot. And I think despite what I said above, people who like LL but wish it had less sex in it will like New Species better. There is more story and less sex than in Breeds. She has basically laid out the whole concept in the first book. LL didn't have time in Breeds to get it all out in one book, the characters were way to busy having lots and lots of hot animal sex to lay out the concept.

Butting into the conversation here, I hope you guys don't mind... I actually haven't read either one of the series, but your description immediately made me remember several series... The whole humans with animal DNA sounds a lot like the TV show Dark Angel, enhanced smell is used in basically every were/shifter book, same goes for mating, and the biting and penis swelling thing is more or less an animal thing... My point is, it's all been done before. There's hardly anything new, so for me it's the characters that count. If they draw me in, I won't care much if the world building is creative or not.

Oh and I'm pretty sure that if an author would aknowledge that their books are heavily influenced by the works of another author, it would become a copy right matter. No publisher would allow that.

message 22762: by Abby (new)

Abby | 353 comments See that's exactly my way of thinking... It's all been done before even before the breeds came out I bet... That's why I honestly don't see the point in getting all mad about it... Yea you can have a certain plot or idea but if the characters aren't likable people aren't gonna like them anyways no matter what twist you put on it...

Kiss of Snow was my favorite book last year. I have reread and I still fall in love with Hawke. The chemistry between he and Sienna was so clear from the first time he saw her. I loved Shadowflame. What happened that had many people upset was heart wrenching, true. But I felt it was also a brave way for the author to deal with a past love that was as intense as this one had been, rather than the easy out we usually see. How often do you read a book where the old flame returns only to have our hero (or heroine as the case may be) realize that the person they've been mooning over for years is really a jerk and they don't know what they ever saw in them. Or they suddenly realize that what they feel is affection, but no more than friendship. Or they kiss and realize the spark is no longer there? Doesn't that get old? And how realistic is it really? When you've been in an intense relationship with someone for ten years and that relationship ends, against both your wishes, and you never had any closure about it there are going to be a lot of lingering, intense feelings. I was shocked the author went where she did with it, but also commend her for not backing down and giving the characters an easy out. It made for a much more emotional read and now these characters are going to have to work harder for their happily ever after.

I don't think the above is really a spoiler, but if anyone thinks so, let me know and I'll hide it.

I agree that they are similar. They have one major difference though. NS is 80% story and 20% sex, the breeds are the exact opposite. I also can think of some plot differences that make NS more enjoyable for me to read. At any rate that old saying "there's nothing new under the sun" counts for both here.
