That was the story, was that the wolf had a hardy sex drive, and that to them it was nothing to be ashamed about. But part of who they were. But I guess if you dont like the sex scenes you need to say away from series like this. Me, I love the series, and have continued to read the series follow up called Dark Angel series.

message 20407: by Magda (new)

Magda | 558 comments It's not sex scenes. I read & enjoy many books containing sex, especially erotica but as I said unnecessary sex scenes detract from the storyline. Plus, Riley was not a likeable character. Her dialogue was ridiculous.
I'm glad you could enjoy the series but it wasn't for me. Like I stated, people are different & tastes are subjective.

Teresa Lloyd (steelerlady) | 68 comments People if you can not handle the sex in the books , I might suggest that you not read adult books. I can not believe that every one is complaining about the sex scenes in the Riley Jenson Guardian book, but yet you read others that has just as much and there ok. To name a few, Black dagger Brotherhood, Carpathian Novels, Kresley Coles, Immortals after dark, Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series. And that is only to name a few of the ones that I myself have read and loved, and have seen many of you all talking about how great they are. WoW!
Oh and you might not want to read Kate Douglas "Wolf Tales, because if you can not handle the sex in RJG series then you will not be able to handle hers.

I haven't read Riley Jenson's series yet and I don't mind sex scenes...but what bothered Magda, I think, is that the sex scenes didn't make sense...not bc she can't handle such scenes...bc we ran across a couple ER and we loved it.

Hope this clear things out, plus not every book is for everyone. I now I loved books that people said...huh, what and why???

I am not sure sure it is the sex they can't handle as it is that they are making a comment on the way it is handled or the amount of sex in a book and the necessity towards the story. Sometimes an author can overdo the sex and not spend as much time on the story itself. A question of balance.

On Riley Jensen, Magda also commented that Riley was not a likable character to her. It wasn't JUST the sex in the books. I read the whole nine books in the series, and I agree with her. To me, Riley was whiney and self-centered, and I was so tired of her moping about finding her soul mate and using it as an excuse to not commit to anyone else. But that's just how I read her character and how I felt about it.

And for me, I enjoy a good sex scene (or three or four) if there is a reason for it. If I buy that these characters have a connection, even if it's just plain old lust. But some sex scenes read like they were thrown in just for the sake of throwing in some sex and there is no real passion. Those are the sex scenes I don't enjoy reading.

I've never read Riley but I totally agree with you about unnecessary sex scenes. I also read and enjoy erotica but too many sex scenes and I start skimming. I can only believe a woman has 3 orgasms tops--when they start having 9 an 10 I start rolling my eyes.

message 20420: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 368 comments I loved the Riley Jensen series. All though the way she treated Quinn made me nuts but he did some horrible things to her too though. Once you get into the middle of the series they really were amazing. The different things she would have to investigate working for the Directorate were unique and interesting. I think one of the reasons I loved it so much was that it was unique. I get burned out on the whole girl meets vamp, someone is trying to kill them, they fall in love, etc. Sometimes it feels like you're reading the same book over and over. I can't think of too many books that are like the Riley books.

@P.A. I agree with you! It's funny when authors try to pass off these sex scenes which are impossible!

The way I always think about it (to give background- I did enjoy Riley, but it's not a favorite) it seemed like Riley's sex scenes were more like porn than erotica. Just a personal feeling, but I almost heard boom-chicka-bow-wa 70's music start up. It's not that there is sex scenes, it was just how I perceived them. It seemed like at least one or two could have been cut out of that book without sacrificing any character and plot development.

This made me giggle. And I think you hit the nail on the head (no pun intended), in terms of my perception of the sex in the books.

While Riley did get on my nerves, I enjoyed the stories enough to read the whole series. Well that and I found the entire series at a used book store for cheap. For me the last three books in the series were the strongest and most enjoyable. Usually towards the end some series start to falter rather than get stronger.

Magda | 558 comments See, now this is a discussion. Some like it, some don't.

I completely agree with you ladies. To me, the sex scenes have to contain significance. I recently read a book by Lorelei James (not from her RR series) and although, I love her as an author, I didn't connect or feel the connection between the characters. Now, we all know there are MANY sex scenes in her books & to me, they just felt like words on a page vs. love or lust or ANYTHING.

Doesn't mean I don't appreciate sex scenes. I read trashy books, too. Believe me, plenty of them, sometimes you're in the mood.

AND, like I said, if you enjoyed them - more power to you. Glad you found an enjoyable read.

Now I'm on Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series currently reading Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs I am loving this series; I'm blowing right through it, I wish I could slow down to savour it a bit but I'm hooked and they are a bit short. The first few Breeds books by Lora Leigh had way too much sex IMO. I still enjoyed the stories and I loved the concept so I kept reading but I skimmed those parts. Then she switched publishers and they got much better. I can see exactly what you're saying.

Wow! We're getting worked up this morning. I have two cents here.

I actually really loved the Riley Jensen series. I think there was HUGE character growth for Riley. The first few books, I agree with you all about some of her unattractive qualities. Lots of sex and self-indulgence, but there is also an extreme vulnerability to her that slowly eked away over time. She grew up. That was one of my favorite parts about the series. It was sort of like starting with a teenager - selfish, self-centered, immature - and ending with an adult. I loved Quinn, but I also loved Ky (sp?)

And PA, I've read the first three of the Breeds, and gave them such horrible ratings/reviews that I probably wont finish. Too much out there for me to waste time on something I know I won't like. It's the animal genitalia that ruins them for me, TBH. Gross!

LMBO...well they are part animal. See, that didn't bother me. Just goes to show you what some people like others hate. For me, I loved the concept of the story. It was unique (well that was before they released 26 of them, now it's a little much)

message 20429: by Shawn (new)

Shawn | 375 comments I loved the entire Breeds series sex scenes and all. The story was so inventive and she made you love her characters. I couldn't wait to get to the next one.

We are all individuals and have our own levels of comfort. Not all books are for everyone. All the Breeds books come with a warning of their explicit content. And those who choose to forge on and still have some discomfort skim on past and enjoy the story because it's awesome!

So true, I thought the story was great. And it isn't so much a discomfort (I enjoy erotica) as I was reading and it was like ya ya another sex scene, blah blah I get it, another 10 orgasms today, add that to the 20 she already had. It just gets too unrealistic, like all they do is have sex. Lora Leigh writes a great sex scene though. In some of the books though I felt like you could take out a few of them and the book still would have been fantastic and still steamy.

message 20432: by Duchess Nicole (new)

Duchess Nicole | 138 comments I've been told many times that once she switched publishers, the books got way better. More pnr and less erotica. Though I will say that Elizabeth's Wolf (Breeds, #3) by Lora Leigh had more substance than the first two, IMO. I just hate it when I read reviews and the person says, "I hated the first books, and I hated this one, too." Why read something you know you won't like and take the time to write a hateful review?

I think Elizabeth's wolf was my favorite. The only reason I keep reading now is because I am dying to get to Cassies story. If it wasn't for her I think the story line should be done now 26 books is a lot.

My take on the sex scenes may be odd. I looove a long build up, because when it finally happens, it's HOT! I also love when it happens quickly and then not again for awhile. I guess I like surprises. When I know that each second chapter is going to have a sex scene, it loses the appeal. No matter the material, it feels like I'm reading the same words over and over, and the story doesn't get to move on.

LOL! I do the same thing! I'll switch genres to get a smut fix. I just finished Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth last night. Freaking awesome book. I'm debating whether to start The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner or The Dead-Tossed Waves (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #2) by Carrie Ryan to stick with the YA Dystopian, or finally get to Duncan (Vampires in America, #5) by D.B. I completley agree and couldn't have said it better. I am glad you enjoyed the series, and like I said I will continue as it did improve and seems to be turning into something I will enjoy. I too, read erotica and books heavy in sex. However, if it doesn't flow with the story it's distracting to me and that's what bothered me about the it. She's not my favorite heroine, and her attitude at times drove me nuts, so it was harder to look past other things. I did enjoy some of the supporting characters though.
@Alana- I lol'd at your 70's porn comment. That about sums it up.
@Shawn- I love that series and watching Adam & Mercy's relationship develope. (Adam *swoon*). Although I will say that series has the complete opposite problem and leaves you saying, wait, did they do it? lol, but it's a fantastic series regardless. I hope you enjoy!
