P.A. Lupton (palupton) | 909 comments I am reading Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent and it is really bugging me. I think the heroine is supposed to be kick ass but she really is just coming off as bitchy and she is contrary just for the sake of being contrary. It's kind of annoying.

Everyone talking about how good Pale Demon was is what has kept me going because the series has just been kind of meh to me.

Yeah Katya and Christine, I think JR was heading that way with V and Butch but she chickened out or her publishers wouldn't let her go that way. I think that V and Butch are the most emotionally bonded characters in the series and I kinda wish they were together sometimes. Controversial i know. It has been touted by some that Quinn, Blay and Layla have some sort of three way arrangement, again i don't think mainstream would go for that either. Anyway she ends it I think it is time for the whole thing with Q and Blay to be resolved.

You know, I think I'm one of the few people I know who really didn't care for this first book of the Guild Hunter series. I liked it, but I did not love it. I really didn't like Raphael at all, even though everyone else was panting over him. He was just too cool, too cruel, even though I get why he had to be that way it did not appeal to me at all. I've actually found the series more enjoyable as it has gone on and absolutely loved books 3 and 4 in the series. I think in the second book, you start to see a more humane side of Raphael that I enjoy more. Plus, her writing style in 3 and 4 is one I really like, but I know others don't.

I've still got to catch up with Pale Demon before A Perfect Blood comes out later this month. The end of the previous book left me with hope that Rachel was finally going to turn things around and I've heard good things about Pale Demon, so here's hoping!

I never got past the first book of this series for the reasons you describe, but everyone who's read it swears to me that Faythe really matures through the series. I keep debating going back and trying the second book because I do like a series where you can see the characters grow and change.

I heard great things about this series and I liked R.Vincent in her other book. It's hard to get thru the first book but base on many rec's, it'll worth the time digested.

Katya | 645 comments I broke away from Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh and picked up Mate Set (Mating Heat, #1) by Laurann Dohner instead....Which was not much better....

Story: This hot Werewolf is forced to mark this woman to save her from being passed around these four guys....and then has to spend three weeks while everyone is in heat having sex with her all day long. Basically, once marked they can only "releave themselves" with the marked person or mate.

I actually have the second book in this series and intend to read it as I do like this author. But this book was just one sex scene after another with some arguing thrown in. It was alright...not going to be a re-read-that is for sure!

Pansy | 740 comments OK, has anyone else read A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness . I am 20% through and the science and history is driving me crazy. At first I was quite intrigued but it is so much. I feel like I am taking a graduate course in the Dynamics of Witches,Demons, and Vampires and their Contributions to Science and Technology. The author is quite resourceful and informative but good grief. I am going to keep pushing through but I do not know if I will make it to the end.

I just recently read this one myself and loved it! In the beginning of the story I really enjoyed reading about Oxford and the library. You just really got a sense of atmosphere and being there. and I loved all the research and genius that went into the background of the story. Yes, there is a lot of science and can get bogged down in it; but there is a payoff and reason for it later in the book. The action does pick up and alot end up going on after the initial setup. I hope you stick with it because it really was a pleasure to read. Just my 2 cents :)

Unfortunately this book was a DNF 1 star read for me. I also heard good things and tried twice but I was sooo bored. I really didn't understand what people like so much about it.

K (oliviamac) | 8 comments I read this book when it first came out, and its true there is alot of science (mumbo jumbo) and history in it, mostly in the beginning.

It does get better ! It really is a good book and the last half is worth wading through all the intellectual stuff in the first part. I actually skimmed over some of it kind like when a author goes off describing the wind through the leaves in the trees for 3 pages lol

The second half of the book is pretty high paced and will leave you waiting expectantly for the second instalment
A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness

Its also interesting to note the author of this novel has multiple degrees in sciences and history

A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness .I did like her description of Oxford and the library. She is very descriptive in her writing which helps. Sorry my friend, haven't gotten to it but I'm on the waiting list for it. I heard great things about it though. I think it's hard as the author trying to establish her foundation. If you do audiobook and found yourself drifting off, have the book along with the audio, it helps you getting through the "non-interesting" portion of it.

I am still trying to read it. I think it just seems so "usual" in it's plot and dialog. It is not fresh. It is top notch writing and it has all the spit and polish that a book by one of the greats has.

But I feel as though it is a copy cat book using angels and a vamp hunter. They do not stand out to me and after I finish this I won't remember them. I mean, who can forget Cat & Bones? Are they not unique and even their story has twists and turns you don't just expect or reactions to things which are unique and different. I always expect to be surprised and wonder how the characters will react to something....in this case-blah....nothing.

I don't particularly believe she is attracted to him despite the author telling me she is. I don't connect with her or the hero for that matter. I like one of the secondary characters-Dimitry...he is about the best part of this book. But the main characters? ~nothing~

To be fair, I do not particularly like books about demons or angels. They kinda get in the way of how I perceive them because of my religious beliefs but that would not stop me from reading it with an open mind and liking it if well done. I loved Franks Nightwalker series and Showalter's LOU series-had no problem with them....Hated Demonica....go figure.

I have never read anything about angels before. But the angel part of this book is good how she describes them and the way they look at the world...it is just the personalities in this book that just doesn't quite do it for me.

I'll keep reading...it is a challenge this month for me that requires me to read it! And I'll let ya know.
