The first was my favorite, too. I was so sucked in by the relationship between Kara and Lyon that I could overlook plot holes big enough to drive a dump truck through. None of the others have quite lived up to the first. But I keep going back for more, so there must be something there.

I finished the first book in Banks' trilogy and I didn't think it was that good, but now that I think back on it, I was definitely comparing it to other Highlander series I've read, like KMM's and Gabaldon's. I found Banks' Highlanders to lack personality compared to the other series.

My thoughts:

Grabbed this one as a freebie on my Nook Color. Who can pass up a freebie right? My husband actually found it searching for vampire fiction. Cover was intriguing (and sexy) and it is a short book so what did I have to loose, right?!

The story immediately gets into the action. You are pulled in before you can even decide if you like the characters or not. Drummond quickly distinguishes bad from good and you just get to light heartedly follow along.

I wouldn’t joke anyone and tell you that this is a heart stealing book. You CAN live without it, but if you’re at a spot between book series right now and just need something paranormal, very sexy and well paced - then go ahead and grab this one. It’s free on most sites including Everly’s Blog on Blogspot.

The sex scenes in book one are heated and delicious, but Drummond does turn it up a notch in books two and three. So if the normal scenes in book 1 don’t turn you on, then move on to book 2 and 3 quickly. There’s something for everyone’s sexual appetite between 1, 2, or 3.

(below is as described from Everly Drummond’s Blog ** I do not claim the rights to this work)

Marked: City of the Damned Book 1. Following the death of her parents, Sara Bishop sells everything she owns and moves to New York in hopes of being closer to her aunt and uncle, the only family that she has left. After stumbling upon a fight between two men in the dark alleyways of New York, a brutal attack by one of the men has left her marked. Pryse has claimed her intoxicating blood for himself. It is against vampire law that a human be unwilling marked, and Gedeon finds himself, not only wanting to protect the fragile human, but doing anything within his power to break the mark that Pryse has placed on her, so that he may claim her for himself. Until now Gedeon believed that vampires could only feel two emotions, lust and hunger, but Sara has him second guessing everything he had ever thought to be true. In Sara’s arms, Gedeon finds something that he never knew existed, and Sara finds more than she could ever hope for. Can Gedeon break Pryse’s mark and claim Sara for himself before it’s too late? The last two books are much better. The first book of a series can lack some personality because we are getting to know the characters. Banks only has three books to her series and when we get a feel for them the triology is over. But I agree the first book was okay, but Bank's books are a much smaller scale than Gabaldon's and Moning's series. We really get to know the characters of those books. Christine | 1127 comments Finished the pinkest book I've ever read Ecstasy Untamed (Feral Warriors, #6) by Pamela Palmer . Maybe the cover model knew what they were going to do with his picture and that explains his pose and the look on his face.
I heard it ends in a cliff-hanger, and it does. I guess I'm not that emotionally invested in the series, because it was only mildly irritating to me.

Next up is Better off Undead Better Off Undead (Bloodhound Files, #4) by D.D. Barant .

The Breed series came highly recommended to me, but I have to say, I don't tear through them like other series. Megan's Mark was good, but I had to take a break after it and refresh my brain with something else for awhile. Lora Leigh tends to get repetative in her wording in these first few books, but I'm told her writing tightens up as the series progresses. I just started Harmony's Waythis weekend (which is after Megan's Mark). So far, so good!

That's pretty spot on, Jolyn. I think the ones published by Berkely (the later ones) have a lot more storyline while the Ellora's Cave are heavy on the smut! You've still got a way to go as there are over 20 in the series now.

Yeah, I didn't realize how looooong this series was when I first started reading them. LOL Imagine my shock when I figured out I had to power through that many! (I'm obsessive in my reading, so there's no way I could NOT read the entire series.) I'm so glad to hear they shine up more. Oh...and the smut I can handle (*snicker*), it's repetative smut that gets tiresome. Sometimes it's as if the same love scenes are in book after book. ;)

I totally agree with you both, the first ones really do have more smut than story, but I have been told by lots of people that they do get better, and like Jolyn I don't mind smut, but it needs to have a place in the book for it, instead of just making space to put lots of it in;).

I think at the moment I'm on a low for books, I have read so many good books, that its feels like I have done all the good ones.

I totally agree (about the placement). Romance books are going to have love scenes, as well as erotic romance (naturally). But there's proper placement, and then there's just writing it to write it. The second option is not a good one. :)

A low for books? Is there such a place?! Sounds horrifying! ;) There HAS to be something out there for you. Something I've done was go to Amazon and look up a book I really enjoyed and then watch the recommendations section based on what I looked up. I've found a lot of books that way.

I normal do get all my books from Amazon, and the thing for me I only like pnr books with alpha males action, romance and women to save, I don't want to read about real life, (its my time out) I think that because I have read really good series, its hard to beat them, I have looked at the recommendations from Goodreads but the books they have on there just are not wooing me to read them.

I have been told to read Black Wings (Madeline Black, #1) by Christina Henry

its meant to have all the action humor and romance just my cup of tea

I hear you about needing the escape. I'm sure any recommendations I'd have to give are series you've already checked out - I think most of the series/books on my TBR list are pretty well-known. A friend of mine just published Forged in Fire (The Forged Series) by Trish McCallan - it has all the elements you are looking for, but the paranormal angle is slight. There's a lot of "real life" going on there. Just a thought though.

I haven't heard of Black Wings. You'll have to let us know how that one is. Hopefully it's what you're looking for. :)

I love Cheyenne McCray's contemporary suspense books, but these were just boring. I couldn't get connected to Nyx, the heroine. She just wasn't written with any depth. Even after two books I still felt like I didn't know her. I felt like someone was telling me a story second hand even though it was written in the first person.

I'm continuing to read both Death's Sweet Embrace (Dark Brethren #2) by Tracey O'Hara and Kindling the Moon (Arcadia Bell, #1) by Jenn Bennett . I think after this I'm going to do some contemp or historical romance. Maybe Charlotte Featherstone, I love her books.
