I just finished Dead Until Dark, and just loved it. Which was completely unexpected, because a month or so ago I checked out Definitely Dead just to see what the Sookie phenomenon was all about. I really didn't get DD and found it a struggle, and was all set to dismiss the series, but thought I'd give it a second chance and get out the first book. I'm so glad I did. Sookie is terrific, Bill is sexy as all hell, and I have such a crush on Sam. I've got a lot of catching up to do, so I'm totally stoked that I went back and tried again. Yay!

I enjoyed the Sookie books and will definately read the next one::Yay Bills my vamp too!::always has been ,always will be.
Started and finished Wolf Tales III last night. These books are really just about the sex but I do enjoy them. This one I liked a lot better than the last one because I liked the female better. Next I think I'm going to start Cordelia's Honor. I've been procrastinating on this one because I'm afraid it's not going to have enough romance...okay sex...for me but it's part of my RRR challenge so I'm going to give it a whirl.
Jess,Amber Benson (aka Tara) actually wrote another series called the Ghosts of Albion with Christopher Golden. I thought they were good...just a little hard to get into because the story started with a few hard to find webisodes. Once I got the world straightened out, I enjoyed the stories. I didn't know she'd written anything new. Thanks!
Christopher Golden...I love him.Not PNR, but I'm just starting a fantasy book called In the Company of Ogres by A Lee Martinez. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Terry Pratchett or Jasper Fforde.
I finished two books today: Forbidden by Suzanne Brockmann and I Hunger for You by Susan Sizmore. Neither were really my cup of tea, though Forbidden was my first Brockmann book and by now I know better than to judge on the basis of one solitary read. So I'll check out a couple of others by her probably. I'm going to stop with the Prime series by Sizemore though--although I like a lot of things about her writing I've read two Prime books now that just haven't pushed my buttons. It's a shame, because I do like how sparky and real her characters are. Ah well.
Just finished Death's Daughter and I liked it but thought there were a few problems. I thought the story was really unique, the main character Calliope is the daugther of death. Death goes missing and she has to help find him. But the writing irritated me!! She wrote as if she were speaking and something about it really bothered me. Plus she made the main character kind of annoying. But the story was interesting enough that I looked past it and still gave it a 3 lol.
Right now I'm reading Outlander.. which I didn't realize was really long lol.
I'm reading Euryale::read this years ago and remebered it as being quite good::its the story of a gorgon (everyone she looks at turns to stone)who's trying to find a cure for her curse:: ooooooo its a bit slow going tho':: could be because i'm not in right frame of mind for it tho'....we'll see.
I'm finally reading Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre, hooray! I'm about five chapters in, and I'm loving it so far.
I just finished Bitten, the first book of the Women f the Underworld Series and it was really good. I am going to have to finish the whole series now. It is written by Kelly Armstrong.I have also just started Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon
I've abandoned Cordelia's Honor after just a couple of chapters. I just couldn't get into it. I don't think it's going to have enough romance to keep my interest and it's so long since it's actually 2 books in one. I may pick it up again but with so many books on my TBR shelf, I don't see any reason to force myself to read something that isn't doing it for me.So, I started Gabriel's Ghost by our own Linnea Sinclair and this is going to be an awesome book. I'm only a couple chapters in but I know I'm going to love it.
-----POSSIBLE SPOILERS--------
I've just finished Lover Enshrined (got delivered this morning and I just sat down and DEVOURED it). And hm, yes, I get what everyone has been saying about it. There's a lot going on in this one little book. A LOT. And it's definitely veering hard into UF and away from PNR. Phury and Cormia's story is almost a byline, for all its' intensity. But you know, I still really enjoyed it. It almost felt like the start of a new series, where the author's laying down a lot of groundwork for future books, and I think that's really what she's doing--starting to take the BDB and the peripheral stories in a new direction. So I'm down with it, and looking forward to seeing what happens with the Chosen and the lessers under new management.

I'm with you Moss, I loved it. I think that if Phury had been my favorite brother I would have been more upset by all of the other story lines in the book, but as he wasn't I didn't mind. Plus, I loved all of the building of the other story lines and what it's set up for the future. Is it April yet? =)
I agree with you Moss::I know there were quite a few people who missed bits out::felt P deserved a better book etc:: but i thought the relationship between P and Cormia was quite good given their personal circumstances::and the rest of storylines are unmissable::I'm having trouble waiting for Rehvs book so I'm reading Dark Lover again:)

I've seen UF used before, what does it stand for?
Michelle M. wrote: "UF = Urban Fantasy"Hmmm... ok, I'll have to look that up because I don't know that I understand the genre.
Believe me, there are plenty of threads floating around these groups that have debated the difference between PNR and UF into the ground. Look around a bit and you'll find them...(but basically urban fantasy is a paranormal book where the romance is not the primary focus. There may or may not be a romantic storyline somewhere in there, but that's not what the book is about. Where as paranormal romance is a romance novel, boy + girl = HEA, with paranormal aspects. And HEA stands for 'happily ever after'.)
Nichole wrote: "Believe me, there are plenty of threads floating around these groups that have debated the difference between PNR and UF into the ground. Look around a bit and you'll find them...(but basically..."
Oh, ok, thank you. I just found this on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_fa...
It helped a little, but your explantion was better. I don't think I've read any UF then.
Uniquely Moi wrote: "Michelle M. wrote: "UF = Urban Fantasy"Hmmm... ok, I'll have to look that up because I don't know that I understand the genre."
Just basically fantasy elements in an urban setting.
May or may not have a romantic element.
Think Dresden Files.
From Wikipedia:
Urban fantasy is a subset of contemporary fantasy, consisting of magical novels and stories set in contemporary, real-world, urban settings--as opposed to 'traditional' fantasy set in wholly imaginary landscapes, even ones containing imaginary cities, or having most of their action take place in them. The modern urban fantasy protagonist faces extraordinary circumstances as plots unfold in either open (where magic or paranormal events are commonly accepted to exist) or closed (where magical powers or creatures are concealed) worlds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_fa...
A lot of the PNR authors incorporate aspects of urban fantasy, so it seems as though most of us read both.
Well, based on Wiki's description, I thought BDB would be UF. But then Nichole said that UF where romance is less focused on, which is NOT the case in BDB. So, at least I have a better idea. Thanks for the input!
It's all about the Happy Ever After! If there's a new one in each book in the series, it's PNR.If it's an ongoing relationship, or one person dating around, it's UF.
Uniquely Moi wrote: "Well, based on Wiki's description, I thought BDB would be UF. But then Nichole said that UF where romance is less focused on, which is NOT the case in BDB. So, at least I have a better idea..."BDB started out PNR but has turned UF, which Ward freely admits.
DarkHeart wrote: "BDB started out PNR but has turned UF, which Ward freely admits. "She did? I thought she said there would always be a primary romance in all of the books.
UM - A lot of people saw a change in Phury's book, where the primary romantic storyline seemed to get pushed into the background in favor of the larger storyline about the war with the lessers and all the stuff with JM, Qhuinn, Blay and Lash.
I know I saw the change, but would still classify the book as PNR because there was a typical romance with HEA in it, even if it wasn't as prominent as it was in previous books.
But this turned into quite the debate, especially in the forums over on Amazon.com. There are a lot of really unhappy fans out there...
I'm of the same thought as Nichole. Even though there are more and more details on the larger storyline of the BDB world, I would still think the books are PNR, because each one will still have a pair of characters getting a HEA, or so I assumed. I don't think she will totally abandoned that pattern.
*crosses fingers*
I need my happy ending, as much as possible, at the end of every book..LOL

I can see there was a big difference in Enshrined, and while they did end up HEA, there was soooo much more frustration in the story line for me. I can see where it all had to start coming in somewhere, so I am going with it and being grateful that Phury and Cormia did end up together.
Now, I can't wait for Rehv!
I just hope that Lover Avenged isn't so much like Lover Enshrined where there are so many different story lines going on. If it was 75% Rehv and 25% all the subplots then I'd be ok with that!
Michelle wrote: "I just hope that Lover Avenged isn't so much like Lover Enshrined where there are so many different story lines going on. If it was 75% Rehv and 25% all the subplots then I'd be ok with that!"Yeah, I agree. There will have to be some subplot, maybe regarding Lassiter, JM and Xhex...I can handle some. I just feel like Cormia got the shaft when it came to the romancing part. She adored Phury for so long and he was such a head case... *sigh* Oh well...
I guess the only way to guarentee the ending I want is to write it myself. LOL
Totally agree! I am glad that Cormia and Phury did get their HEA but I think it should have been more deep! Oh well! I have high expectations for Rehv's story! I hope Ward does us all proud!!! hehe
I just finished Working for the Devil. Man, I don't know what to tell you --I'm split right through the middle on how I feel this book. On the one hand, Lilith Saintcrow has the most fearsome imagination and eye for detail I've encountered in a long, long time. It's almost like reading a post-apocalyptic Jane Yolen, it's so intricate. And talk about doing the groundwork, this book works harder than a soldier ant: my brain is totally awash in sensory overload from the world she's built. I spent half the time dazzled and the other half wtf'ing as I kept flipping back and forth to try and get a grip on the constant stream of information. Maybe it's just I'm not so exposed to UF or whatever, but she is fierce.
Ah yeah and on the other hand, have I ever loathed a character more than I loathe Dante Valentine?
No.
The constant--constant--bitching and whining she does is bad enough, but that teamed with the chip on her shoulder the size of, oh I don't know, CANADA, and her one constant state of being (snarly and pissed)....oye, I've never wanted a main character to die so bad. No really, I wanted her to die. I wanted her to extinguish, wither, desiccate, dissolve, explode, finish.
Phew. Sorry, needed to get it out. Does she get better? I really want to read the second book but I just don't know if I can stand any more of her.

So, Moss...would you say you had strong feelings about this character?Canada. That is quite large.
Whew! Maybe I'll move that one a little further down the TBR pile, since she seems to evoke the need for anger management!
Then again, I still read Anita Blake even though I want to slap the bejesus out of her and Richard both.
Grrr...Richard.
(Experiencing my own moment of seething rage, complete with narrowed eyes and clenched teeth.)
Maybe we should start a new thread: "Characters you want to beat the living daylights out of: Who inspires your wrath?"
Michelle M. wrote: "So, Moss...would you say you had strong feelings about this character?

LOL
Anger management is right. But oh god, I loved all the rest of the book so much.
Heh, I'd love that thread btw.

Nichole wrote: "DarkHeart wrote: "...She did? I thought she said there would always be a primary romance in all of the books"LOL, I think they'll be one of the series that straddles the line between the two genres. The change in direction is what has upset a lot of fans, but is something I love. Anyway, I trolled the forums for the post in which she discussed it. This was her response to the question of whether or not BDB was now UF:
"That quote was from a conference in response to a question asked whether I would classify the books as urban fantasy or not and I said yes because there are urban fantasy elements in them. The question was not whether I consider them urban fantasy over paranormal romance or whether they are soley urban fantasy. There's always been romance in my books because that's what comes out of my head.
In Rehv's case, everyone who has read him has said there's a lot of romance in him- and two people have said that he and Ehlena are tied for first place with Bella and Z as favorite couple. Personally I think he and Ehlena have a great romance and that the ups and downs of their relationship are fascinating to watch. I mean, helluva predicament to be in for him. And that's before the sh** hits the fan.
I hope this helps- oh, and the new series centers on couples as well (cuz Love Conquers All!)"
Moss, thread created. Though I admit I'm too sleepy right now to get my proper Irish up and write a scathing character admonishment. I'll have to pull out the can o'whoop ass tomorrow. :)
Michelle, it's not PNR, but I read Judy Blume's Wifey recently and the husband in it nearly made me throw the book across the room. Ummm...I also typically hate brooding, self-loathing vamps whether hero or heroine - it's so cliché and annoying.I am currently reading, for the first time ever, Bram Stoker's Dracula! I figured I should do so before continuing on with my case of vamp lit. I like it much more than I thought I would. It definitely has erotic elements, too.
Julie: I haven't read Dracula either! I'm starting to feel rather remiss about it too. And as for wanting to throw your book, oh, the passion!
I'm reading Gabriel's Ghost by our own Linnea Sinclair. Wow...this is a great book. The hero, Sully, is such a study in opposites. Strong, self-confident and yet terribly vulnerable at the same time. I love the heroine Chaz as well. She is smart and feisty but not stubborn or afraid to apologize when she realizes she's hurt him. There is sexual tension but none of that angst that goes on and on until you just want someone to either give in or die. It's sci-fi but not so complicated that you have to be a die hard fan of the genre to get it. The secondary characters are as interesting as the primary ones. I love Ren and hope there's a sequel to this book about him...*hint, hint*If you're not sure about Sci-fi romance, give this book a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I'm reading Nalini Singh's Slave to Sensation right now. I'm on Chapter 4 and it's been a pretty slow start so far. I'm waiting for something good to happen
Michelle - I think it's important to read, especially if you have some books which refer to or use parts of the Dracula story. Good to know the source first.I HAVE thrown books before. I'm a very lively reader, ha!
Lori - I am going to try that. I have yet to read any SFR.
Lori wrote: "I'm reading Gabriel's Ghost by our own Linnea Sinclair. Wow...this is a great book. The he..."
Lori, it sounds good. Linnea Sinclair is getting quite a bit of love around here so am going to try and find her. Am in need of soothing sensible heroine.

Well, i just finished Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I needed a bit of a break from the DH 'verse....so i just started the first Black Dagger Brotherhood book...and i'm LOVING it so far. :)ETA: I guess i'm the only one around here who didn't hate the first Immortals After Dark book?! Eeeep.
Right now I'm finding any excuse to avoid reading Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I'm somewhere around page 90 and I'm soooo determined to finish it, but I'm not enjoying it. I picked Dance With The Devil as one of my books for the April challenge, but I may have to swap it out for something else. I think it's finally time to admit defeat and say the Dark Hunter books just aren't for me.
Just finished Evermore The Immortals, Book 1 by Alyson Noel. It was okay, sort of simple and sweet. First book I've read in a while that's written in the present tense, which took a chapter or two to get used to, but it wasn't a biggie. POV is first person, and the narrator is only sixteen and a half, so very YA, but other than that no major worries.
Moss: "a soothing sensible heroine" LOLNichole: Talon & Sunshine's relationship, apart from the scene when he's in her apartment for the first time, didn't do a thing for me. I only liked it for introducing Zarek and Valerius, and for the info revealed in the final fight scenes, so I understand your not getting into it.
Nichole wrote: "Right now I'm finding any excuse to avoid reading Night Embrace by Sherrilyn ..."
Nichole, it's all good. I'm part of a small tribe of non-believers myself when it comes to Kenyon. The DH crew are understanding of us and we all eventually unite anyway under the soft, glowing banner of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and Zsadist's hotness.
