Hehe thanks for putting up with my lack of Kenyon love. Not that I can't appreciate the universe she's creating mind you--it's pretty detailed, and I actually really liked Acheron's demon, she was hilarious.

Yeah and Feehan...hmm I've stopped after four books because I know what you're saying Michelle. For me, it all got a little repetitive. Although, again, I do like aspects of her--her characters are muy intense, no? All those stormy almost-vampire alpha males.

I picked up ten books from the library today wheee! No beddy-byes for me tonight!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments I'm discovering that I'm not a fan of LKH, so honestly, it's no problem not loving all of the big names. All we can do is try them out - if they don't work for us, they don't work for us. There are always more authors out there waiting for us. As the 99 unread books on my bookshelf can attest. ;)
*As long as my "read" list remains higher than my "to-read" list, I figure I'm doing okay.

Ash's story was so awesome. Well, if you can get past the first half and how heartbreaking it was..

Yz wrote: "LOL...yeah..yeah..How can I not like a so popular a series?...LOL.."

It's okay YZ, there are some popular series that I don't like. For example, I pretty much despised LA Bank's series. The first book was Minion. ick.

Anya Becker | 12 comments Im currently on book 5 of Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series... They are mostly time travel with some faery and druids and lots of yummy highland LAirds!!

message 1257: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments I really want to read Moning's Fever series. It sounds muy interesante too.

Any one have opinions on that one?

And DarkHeart, I have such a love/hate relationship with LKH. I want to love the series, and at times I do, but I find myself coasting straight past any and all sex scenes. I find hers gratuitous at this point, and, frankly, a little stale. ::gasp::

It's almost as though once you've read one sex scene by her, you've read them all.

And my previous complaint about her following every question mark with "I made it a question." ::grinding teeth::

Hmmnn...you know what! I think I just don't like ANITA. I know I love Jean Claude, and Asher, and Jason and Edward and the vamp politics. And I also love the fact that they have a necromancer agency. But I find myself wanting to slap the bejesus out of Anita. I suppose I read them to find out what's going on with everyone else in her world!

Edward is next. Yay!

I read the first 3 a little while back... IMO it took me a while to get into the books...Over all they are great reads it just takes you a while to understand.. which is kinda like the main character too..
you should check out Moning's website... she has excerpts and actually all 3 on audio for ya...

I read these before reading her Highlander series... and am finding some things that will help you understand the whole FAE aspect, but its not really necessary to do before reading the Fever Books... her newest is due out Aug 25th i think ...

message 1260: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Speaking of LKH - I haven't read any of the Anita Blake books, but I read the first two Merry Gentry books, and I found the sex annoying. Not because there was so much of it; I like me a good sex scene as much as the next girl. But it just seemed like *every* time she had sex, it was the most earth shattering, amazing, apocalyptic experience ever. It got exhausting. And I just didn't find them... sexy!

message 1261: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Oh, and about Moning - why can every other author out there seem to be able to keep up with more than one series at a time, but Moning had to quit her Highlander series to write the Fever books? And she still on puts out one a year. Lame.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments Nichole wrote: "Speaking of LKH - I haven't read any of the Anita Blake books, but I read the first two Merry Gentry books, and I found the sex annoying. Not because there was so much of it; I like me a good sex s..."

Hehe... I've only read the first Anita book, and I'm on the third audio book of the Merry series, but I find that the sex scenes are actually taking me out of the book and the plot. In this book, especially, they don't seem to be furthering the plot along which is my issue. If I were just looking for erotica it would be fine, but I'm interesting in the underlying story and I think it's getting lost.

Well, last I heard is that KMM has been sick with Lyme Disease.

Here is what she said:

"Dreamfever was going to be published sooner but I got sick again, so mea culpa. I've been wrestling with Lyme the whole time I've been writing this series and it has some cognitive side-effects when it's at it's worst. The series is so complex, with so many minute details to keep track of (you'll see what I mean at the end) with so many tiny little things that matter in each installment that it's taken me longer to write than I'd hoped. There've been times when I've simply been too sick to write. The bright side of it is--once the series is done, people will be able to go buy them all in paperback and read them back to back, which is what I'd hoped for in the beginning(originally, I lobbied for the Fever series to be released in mass market format but my pub wouldn't agree.)

I know what it's like to get stuck on a series and have to wait. When I was in college I loved the David Eddings series and each year was pure torture between books. I starved myself for a week to afford the new hardcover the day it was released. Ironically, back then (in those ancient long ago days:) it was the exception for an author to put out more than one, maybe two books, a year (Nora excluded). I'll never be a five-book a year girl. I'll never be a three-book a year girl. Once I'm strong again I may be a two-book a year girl, LOL.

So, no date yet for Dreamfever, but probably late summer/fall of 2009. It's the most intense, complex book yet and I need to get it exactly right.

PS, for those of you who wonder about lyme, I'm posting a link to Amy Tan's website. I'd originally considered writing about it myself, but I find it easier and better for me not to think about it too much, and write about happier things. What she experienced is virtually identical to what I experienced (with one exception, I stopped treating too soon and got it back again.) Warning, it's not an easy story to read.
http://www.amytan.net/LymeDisease.aspx"

That would explain why its taking her too long to write the books. I wish she gets better soon.

CJ Thompson (cjthompson) Hey guys......I'm kinda new here, and I see there's been quite a lot of discussion about these Dark Hunter books, so I just wanna ask if they are anything like Christine Feehan's series before I try to get into one. I stopped liking her books a while ago due to their repetitiveness and I do not want more of the same! Just let me know if I'm wasting my time or not :)

And as for what I'm reading right now......I just finished Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine, and I'm waiting for the 4th and 5th of the series to arrive. Also just about to read Men of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong! I'm so excited XD

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments Courtney,

No, I wouldn't say Feehan is anything like Kenyon. If you're refering to her Carpathians, then I think you'll enjoy the Dark Hunter men a lot more. Strong alpha men, yes - but fiery alpha women as well, and scorchingly hot relationships. Plus, Ash and Simi - what more could a girl ask for? ;)

Ooh, and aren't the Morganville books brilliant? I just read them last week and am completely hooked - waiting impatiently for the next release. And I've decided to read through the Women of the Otherworld series, instead of impatiently jumping to the Clay and Elena books. Starting Industrial Magic next.

message 1271: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Have any of you read the Night world books? I put a hold on the first one at the library since we seem to be ordering all of them there. Are her other books good as well? The author is L.J. Smith.

message 1272: by CJ (new)

CJ Thompson (cjthompson) Thanks for your reply DarkHeart! I was referring to her Carpathian series, but I also find her other series have a lot of the same elements. I'll definitely give Sherrilyn Kenyon a try though ;D

And yes, the Morganville Vampires are amazing! While I found Rachel Caine's Weather Warden Series way too gloomy and bleak for me, somehow she does it exactly right in her Vampire series.

And I'm so glad you decided to read through the whole Women of the Otherworld series instead of skip! I've been trying to convince my friends to do the same, but they are all hooked on Clay and Elena! I told them to just give the other characters a chance to grow on them. I find that you get better insight into the characters you already love reading about them from different viewpoints too. I don't know about anybody else, but to me it's more exciting!

Ooh, I haven't read them yet, but when I was back in the States last week I did pick up [book:Night World
, The Vampire Diaries The Awakening and The Struggle and The Secret Circle The Initiation and The Captive Part I because I've heard good things - and I'm apparently obsessed with YA books at the moment. ;)

Yeah, I read the first two last year and loved them, but then set the series aside and read other things. But I've got the whole series sitting on my shelf and I'm desperate to read Broken & Men of the Other World, so I've decided to read all of the way through. And with such a break between the first two books and the third, I forgot how annoying I found Paige and actually quite like her now. ;)

EXACTLY! You and me and DarkHeart, we are right THERE on the LKH issue.

I find I like Merry's personality far more than I like Anita's. No whining.

I was somewhat more comfortable with all the gettin' it on in the Merry Gentry series, what with the trope of "sex magic" and her being related to a fertility goddess. But still.

However, the Mistral thing? Whoa. Now THAT was definitely unique. But neither of you got up to that, did you? Ooops.

message 1280: by Stav (new)

Stav (voliotisa) | 291 comments Hey Tamara,

regarding Sergei Lukyanenko's Night Watch and you're mom is right to a degree...I first saw the movie, and loved it, so decided to pick up the book..the book is divided into 3 parts...the first part is a little hard to get into, but once you get past it, the storyline gets better...the following books were much better...my friend Yazmin who read it too also said the same thing...Day Watch and Twilight Watch much much better...but this is just regular old paranormal fiction..not paranormal romance...but it's got action and is a really interesting twist on the ageless battle of good vs. evil

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments I had such a love/hate with Lords of the Underworld. The premise was interesting, and the action was great, but the relationships seemed forced to me. Anyone else feel that way?

I was more interested in the action going on peripherally. Although I did really like...oh, total blank on the names, dammit! Goddess and the scarred guy...shoot!!

Michelle M,

You mean, Anya and Lucien. I find them a cute couple, although many readers think Anya is too juvenile. But she was worth a couple of laughs for me, and their relationship plenty of "sighs". Okay, I enjoyed the two of them together..LOL

message 1287: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Thank you! I was leaning toward Lucien, but thought it was my Argeneau obsession steering me awry.

I think that's why I liked them, Yz: She was indeed worth some laughs, and he was so reticent, which made them seem more real to me, more fleshed out. The others were more flung together.

I was not a big fan of "girl chases boy" premise, but Anya's pursuit of Lucien is just so cute, I couldn't resist her charms. Sometimes I get tired of guy pursuing the girl storyline, so a female who knows who she wants can be refreshing. Plus all the crazy names she calls him. Flowers..LOL..

It's funny, in my other group, Anya is not popular. They can't stand her, and I thought I was the only one who thought she was just "cute" and totally appropriate in a crazy sort of way to simply "thaw" out Lucien. Happy to know, I'm not totally alone in that thought..LOL

message 1292: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Yz, no way are you alone! I think she's what kept me reading, since I also prefer girls that can take care of themselves. Maddox's woman was a little too low key for me, but once Anya showed up, I got far more interested. And you're right, her whimsical and impulsive personality was a great match for the ever-stern Lucien. Opposites attract!

message 1293: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments I loved Anya's character! She could be a tad annoying at times, but I mean, look what she had to deal with!! lol. Lucien was so down on himself she had to be aggressive.

Does anyone know when the next book is coming out in this series? Maybe I should re-read them, I haven't looked at them in awhile.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments More than halfway through Simon R. Green's The Man with the Golden Torc. I wasn't thrilled with the first 60 pages or so, as Green set up his world and hero. Then suddenly it became very funny and very fast-paced. Lots of action and now a brewing romance. Main character is sort of a supernatural James Bond who has been declared rogue and is working to find out why...and of course he's killing lots of baddies along the way.

I keep thinking "this would make a great movie."
