Amy | 24 comments I'm waiting for 'At Grave's End' for Night Huntress series. I love them!!! This might be one of my top ten series. But again, I just start getting into reading series. :)

Lori - it's pretty much the formula for all the books. I got far into the series and I just gave up on it.

Your right it does seem to be that way in nearly all of her books. I have read them all and some I liked and others not so much. I like her Drake Sisters series better.

message 1004: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 2 comments Sherilyn Kenyon, Night Embrace.
This series is very much a series, as in you really need to start at the beginning to have any idea who all the characters are, and the back plot. That being said, I don't mind this as I almost only read series. I like her writing, although her "hero" characters are all these HUGE guys. I am tired of this stereotype, but it's hard to find Paranormal romance where the guys aren't these massive hulking he-men.

LOL, I hear you. I own the first four, but stopped after the first two. I will go back because I'm curious about Gregori, but I did find the women quite weak and the men so overbearing. I've only read the first of her Ghostwalker series so far, but the characters were more balanced in it, and I enjoyed it enough to buy the second one a couple of weeks ago.

message 1006: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Jessica,

I am SO with you on the "hulking he-men" thing. That can be okay sometimes, but men in the real world are all different, and it's totally possible to find a super hot guy that's not huge. In fact, I'm rarely attracted to guys that big in real life.

message 1007: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 79 comments Hi All,

I'm new here. So far I've read the entire Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward, the first book of Lara Adrian's "Midnight Breed Series" and the first book of Sherrilyn Kenyons "Dark Hunter Series" and I absolutely LOVED them all. I just picked up the 1st book of the "Carpathian Series" by Christine Feehan and I am having a hard time reading chapter one. It just doesn't seem to pull my interest. Can anyone tell me if this series is worth reading?

Thanks

This is my take on Feehan's Carpathians. I read all the books but I don't own a single one. On the other hand, I have all the Ghostwalkers books. I feel the second series is collectible, the first one more like "borrow" from the library type.

Gregori, however, is my favorite Carpathian.

Stephanie (stephanie_julian) | 108 comments Just started Coyote Breed by Lora Leigh and realized I'm missing one of the first stories in the series. Ack!

message 1010: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I can't decide what to read next. Dark Desire was such a struggle to get through that I want my next book to be really good. Below is the list of what I have on my challenge lists that are on my shelf (I'm still waiting on the library for 4 books). Please help me decide which one to start.

Dark Protector by Alexis Morgan
The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter
The Smoke Thief by Shana Abé
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
Moon Called by Partricia Briggs
Wolf Tales II by Kate Douglass
Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole
Claiming the Courtesan by Anna Campbell

message 1011: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 128 comments Hi Lori. The only one I have read on your list is Moon Called and I LOVED it. :)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 1020 comments Mod
Lori,

If you are looking for a quick read and with a clear HEA, I would go for Dark Protector or The Darkest Night. Both writers are not heavy in prose and the action flows quicker, which can be a good break from Feehan's rather lengthy descriptions.

Jessica, Nicole, you two bring up an interesting point. My boyfriend is 5'6", a rather slim Japanese-American guy, and I think he's super-hot. Most of my ex-boyfriends have been slim guys who were either short or of medium height. But I do notice that I really dig the hulking guys when I read or write fiction. I have quite the thing for Wolverine, for example, and though he's short in the comics (and not in the movies), he's a pretty big dude. I wonder why there's such a disparity in what I go for in real life and what turns me on in fiction.

Maybe it's because I'm pretty short (5'3"), and the thought of a tall, broad guy plays into a domination kink?

Er, if that isn't TMI. Domination in fiction! Yeah, that's it. ;)

I loved both Moon Called and Bitten, so I'd throw my vote behind one of them.

Moon Called and Bitten are my favorites. You can't go wrong with ether book.

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I'm currently reading Wolf at the Door by Christine Warren. It's not really grabbing my attention so far.

A woman with obviously great taste. ;)

Lori, I think you would like Bitten. :)

message 1019: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Okay, Bitten it is. Thanks girls!

message 1020: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 2 comments Hi Fangirl, Nicole, Thank you for validating my opinion =^_^= My husband is average Height, kinda slim, and I think he's superhot too -blush-. Although I do like the occasional fictional he-man, I'd just like some imagination on the authors part... maybe it's harder to write an average dude and make him appeal to the masses. Anyway back to the topic, I also really liked J.R. Wards writing, and universe, real substance there. I like a good back story a lot. I'm kinda new to this genre, I need recommendations for real substantial characters , and plot. Thanks!

message 1021: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments I think at this point writing a lean but defined guy would be more unique and realistic than the friendly giants we see in PNR.

message 1022: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Some of the sexiest male characters I know are average, lean and a couple of them are downright short for a guy. Any guesses? Give up? All the yummy Anita Blake boys. Nathaniel and Micah are little. Jason is average and I think Jean Claude and Asher are maybe a tad above average. Not a hulking he-man in sight.

message 1023: by April (new)

April Howell (april97) | 2 comments I just finished Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs, I read Cry Wolf first and was excited when I found out about her short. I thought it was interesting left me wanting more. I just purchased the first in her Mercy series and am looking forward to that! Werewolves are very cool, I have been into vamps for sometime, its a nice change.

message 1024: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments Lori if you're looking for a sexy book, then you should go with Kiss of a demon king

message 1025: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments How many dudes do you actually see in real life who look like the huge hulking romance hero characters? There really aren't many of them out there in the world. Even most Hollywood actors aren't 6'6". I generally have tried to date taller guys, but that's because I'm 5'9".

message 1026: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (shigyrl30) I just finished reading Dawn's Awakening by Lora Leigh and it was a good read. I am looking forward to the other books in this series. Next up for me will probably be The Pagan Stone by Nora Roberts.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments So, I'm welling and truly wrapped up in Amy Lane's Little Goddess series. I read Vulnerable last weekend and quickly ordered the other two in the series, which arrived Friday. I finished Wounded earlier today and am about to start on Bound. This isn't helping my challenge list one bit, but I love the world Amy has created and I can't stop myself from completing the series. So good!

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Just started A Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix tonight. I'm only 30 pages in and I'm already hooked. It's so dark and gritty compared to everything else in the genre right now. It immediately has a different feel from other urban fantasy; it's much more real.
I love stuff with a dash (or more) of humor, but this book really appeals to my dark side. Can't wait to read more!

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 1020 comments Mod
I've started A Rush of Wings, too yesterday, and I was immediately entranced with the book. Definitely grittier than most read, and shrouded with mystery.

I hate that I have to go to work and can't read...LOL..

message 1030: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Bitten was fantastic! Can't wait to read the rest of the series. Tonight I'm going to start Kiss of a Demon King. I've read mixed reviews but I gotta read it.

message 1031: by Jess (last edited Feb 16, 2009 02:39PM) (new)

Jess | 173 comments I just finished the third book in the Aisling Grey series - Light My Fire, and now I am starting Holy Smokes. It should be awesome

message 1032: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephanie_julian) | 108 comments I'm reading The Book of Werewolves by Sabine Baring-Gould. It was written in the 1800s and it's non-fiction but it's fascinating so far. I'm a research geek and I love reading old books like this to find out how werewolves were depicted years ago. I plan to use the info in my next series.

message 1033: by Margay (new)

Margay | 1 comments I just finished The Magic Knot by Helen Scott Taylor, which is a wonderful exploration of the magic and lore of fairies, etc., in Ireland and Cornwall. Well worth the read.
Margay

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments Lori, I liked KOADK. It's not my favorite in the series, but it was still good. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

message 1035: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) I finished Dark Desires After Dusk last week sometime and just from the little glimpse of Rydstrom you got in that book, I was like... "ooh, i don't know..."
(Spoilers if you haven't read it yet.....)

The way he had Sabine tied to his bed and just the way he was acting with Cade made it seem like the next book was going to be pretty dark, and I just don't know if I buy a true HEA coming from that dark of a place.

message 1036: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I'm getting ready to start reading Hunted by Amelia Elias. It's the first book in The Guardian's League series.

message 1037: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Just finished Kiss of a Demon King and I loved it. It didn't take long at all for me to get sucked back into that magical world Cole has created. Nichole, I know what you mean about fearing it would be really dark based on the end of that last book but it wasn't at all what I had expected. It wasn't my favorite in the series but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I'm going to start Halfway to the Grave. I've heard so much about Bones, I can't wait to "meet" the yummy vampire.

Oh, Lori..you are going to enjoy Bones. I just finished the first book recently, and he is definitely a vamp hottie.

It is part of a series. Book 2 is called Ink Exchange and book 3 is called Fragile Eternity and is due out late April.

I'm glad to hear it was good. I own the first two books and have pre-ordered the third, but as usual, have not read them yet.

What did you like about it Amy? I've looked at it but haven't bought it yet.

message 1044: by Amy (new)

Amy | 24 comments Stephanie, I like the storyline and the characters' development. I love the relationship of the main characters and the plot that they have to overcome. It's a beautiful story as well.. It's on the clean romance since there is no sex scene but the emotion between the characters do take my breath away. Plus the book pulls me in from the beginning and it's one of the book that makes me want continue reading to know the ending. It's fun reading!

I agree that I am quite disappointed in the 3rd book (At Grave's End). But not because the book is not good. It's just because I need more Bones!! :) Dare I say it's almost like New Moon in Twilight saga.

message 1049: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Amy -
I was also disappointed with At Grave's End. It was still a good book, but I felt like it didnt' quite live up to the first two. This book had more action and plot, which is fine, but the characters were what made the first two so great (better than 'good', you know?) and that was missing in this one.
Plus, I thought the plot and action moved way too fast. I came to the conclusion that Frost should have split this plot into two books in order to allow more time for character interaction, and more time for the plot to grow. As it was, the villain of the book just didn't have time to really make an impact.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments That's interesting. I wouldn't say that I was disappointed with At Grave's End, but I didn't enjoy it as much as One Foot in the Grave. I missed the interaction between Cat and Bones, but I enjoyed viewing their relationship through the eyes of those around them. And the development of the supporting characters was quite interesting, although I still contend that there wasn't enough of Juan for my liking - he's hilarious! ;) And Vlad was brilliant!
