Summer (summerbp) | 59 comments I'm finally reading Lynsay Sand's Argenaeu Vampires series, due to numerous recommendations here. I like! Read The Accidental Vampire yesterday and am about half-way through Vampire, Interrupted today. It's nice that each one is a stand-alone novel.

I'm also reading Charlaine Harris's other series (Lily Bard and Aurora Teagarden); I liked Sookie so much that I'm hoping these are just as good.

message 52: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Thanks Jessie! I really just want to see their interaction. I hated that LKH started the book after their meeting instead of including it. What made him want her so bad? I'll go to Borders and read it for free. LOL. Or the comicbook store next to my job might have it..I saw a Jean Claude one in the window one day....Thanks again!

message 53: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Summer - just to warn you about the other Harris novels - they are not quite up to par with Sookie. I liked about every other Aurora book. The first books was great and it made me want to read more. The second book made me want to quit. After a long time passed, I picked up book three and four and kind of got attached to the characters. She's not shy about changing things up in her books' worlds. I did read them all, but more for the satisfaction of knowing how it all ended up for the characters than the actually mystery or writing.

I thought the Lily Bard series was better than Aurora, but maybe only because there was a lot more action and there were only 5 books to the series so it all ended quickly.

I think they are worth reading, but I just wanted to warn you that they are a bit different than Sookie.

message 54: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerbp) | 59 comments Thanks for the warning, Melissa. I'm about to start the first Lily Bard. I doubt I'll read all of them; I was just desperate for something from the library.

message 55: by Natale (new)

Natale (natalestenzel) | 32 comments Summer, I've read all of Lynsay Sands' Argeneau books. I think Vampire, Interrupted was actually her best book yet. Marguerite is such a great character and it was fun to see more of the history of the family. Hope you enjoy it.

message 56: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments Finished Lover Enshrined. I liked it more than I did V's book. I think because I knew going in that it wasn't a romance. I still don't like that she switched to UF halfway through the series, but this time I was prepared. I'll keep going with this series, but not with the same excitment and I won't be buying them in hardcover.

message 57: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerbp) | 59 comments Natale: Vampire, Interrupted was good, but I felt a little cheated because I'd figured it out from the get-go. I really liked The Accidental Vampire; looking forward to reading the rest of the books!

message 58: by Natale (new)

Natale (natalestenzel) | 32 comments Summer, I'll admit I'd figured the secret out, too, but the journey still entertained me enough to keep reading. I wanted to know the how's and the why's.

Also, Marguerite appeared as a strong secondary character in several books prior to Vampire, Interrupted. Knowing her as the matriarch of the clan through those earlier books . . . and then to see her finally get her own story . . . I think that had a lot to do with the story's appeal for me.

message 59: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments I just finished The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter. It's the first of a new trilogy or series. I liked it a lot. Also read Angel of Mercy by Toni Andrews. It was more urban fantasy than para romance but a good book.

message 60: by Christal (new)

Christal | 83 comments I just finished the latest Sookie book, From Dead to Worse. I liked it but it was missing some of the snap the series usually has.

message 61: by Cassandra (last edited Jun 17, 2008 05:58AM) (new)

Cassandra | 49 comments I'm reading Phantom Pleasures by Julie Leto. I'm a bit disappointed so far (I guess they can't all be Kresley Cole). I'm only about halfway through and it seems like she's going to be following two couples in one story. I usually prefer to just have the other couple introduced and then read their story in a separate book. Telling two in one seems like neither couple has enough conflict to fill their own book. We'll see if she can pull it off though...

message 62: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I just finished Dark Watcher and Storm Watcher by Lilith Saintcrow (she wrote the Dante Valentine series). They were short, but great stories. They are books 1 and 2 of 5 and I'm having a hard time finding the other books, but now I have to because I have to see where it goes! The books revolve around a few women who are witches called Lightbringers. There are Dark things out there who like to eat the Light in those with Power. There is a large magical group who "makes" men into Watchers and sends them to protect and contact the witches in the world. There job is to bring them into the Circle so the forces of Light can combine and hold off the Dark. Each book is about a different witch and her watcher. Most of the characters are introduced in the first book. It reminded me of the Carpathian series because each Watcher has one witch out there that will sooth the Dark in him instead of hurt him with her Light. Decent romance and a cool take on witchcraft and psychics.

Erica Poole | 21 comments I had to work an all night job, well from 2 pm to 2 am yesterday and I took my latest Katie Macalister book, Holy Smokes in, slow night, patient was sleeping pretty much the whole time, so I started AND finished it. I love the Aisling Gray Guardian series!

message 64: by Christal (new)

Christal | 83 comments Erica - I love Aisling too. She's so funny and that Drake is so hot. I just got the first book in the Silver Dragons series but haven't started it yet. Anyone else read it?

message 65: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments I just finished Dead Girls are Easy by Terri Garey. The sequel is coming out next month so I thought I should read this one so I'd know if I want to buy the next one. It was a little light on the romance but I liked it.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Cheri- I just finished that book yesterday as well. Thanks for lettig me now that the sequel is out next month.

Summer (summerbp) | 59 comments I just finished Bit the Jackpot by Erin McCarthy; I was disappointed. The characters were all pretty flat, and the plot was...well, what plot?

message 68: by Celeste (new)

Celeste | 12 comments I'm reading Night Keepers by Jessica Andersen. It is the 1st in her Final Prophecy Novels... very good so far!!! Looking forward to the next book already! ;-)

message 69: by gtrachel (new)

gtrachel I'm almost done with Weddings from Hell, and it's been really good so far. I bought it for Frost but read the other short stories too. Very cute!

message 70: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 137 comments Summer, is Bit the Jackpot part of her Vegas Vampire series? I didn't even like the first book so I haven't bothered with the series. The characters are flat, there's not plot whatsoever, more like ramblings. I need context in order for a novel to keep my attention.

message 71: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 39 comments I just started Jeaniene Frosts second book "One foot in the grave." I love this author! Her stories are what LKH USE TO write like.

message 72: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 39 comments Oh... and Gena Showlater's new series "Lords of the Underworld" is excellent! I've read 1, 2, and have 3 on the way.

There's an e-book, a prequil to this series here http://www.amazon.com/The-Darkest-Fir...

message 73: by Christal (new)

Christal | 83 comments I just started One Foot in the Grave last night and I'm really enjoying it so far. I was a bit so-so on this series after the first book but I think this one might restore my faith.

I'm also reading LKH's short story collection Strange Candy. I really like these stories. It makes me remember the early Anita days when she used to write good stories with actual plot!

message 74: by Erica (new)

Erica Poole | 21 comments Christal, yeah I just read it too, it was really good, some interesting new characters and ideas she has added in there. It definitely picks up where the Aisling Grey series left off, AND Aisling, Drake and Jim are in this one a bit too! Unfortunately, the next one isn't out until October, I can't wait!

message 75: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (oliviationlee) | 4 comments Touch the Dark by Karen Chance seems to be starting off slow...

message 76: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerbp) | 59 comments Gina: yes, Bit the Jackpot is part of the Vegas Vampires series. I disliked it for all the exact reasons you mentioned.

message 77: by Amie (new)

Amie (amiestuart) | 44 comments Olivia I gave up after 30 pages :(

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
Olivia, it is a bit slow moving, but I really like the characters. It does pick up, so I'd suggest sticking with it. :)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Just finished Darkest Night by Showalter. It's the first book from this author I have read . I liked it but was annoyed how she chose this book to be a set-up for the others to come. I was really inetrested in Maddox and Ashlyn and kept feeling cheated with the interference of the other characters. I'm just starting Darkest Kiss. Hopefully this one plays out better than the first.

message 80: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments Jael, I hope you end up liking it. I loved the first book and just started the second last night. It was too easy for me to put it down. I'm hoping that changes.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) I just finished Darkest Kiss today. I liked it better than Darkest Night. Again she broke up the story b/t Lucien and Anya to set-up Darkest pleasure but I didn't mind b/c it wasn't too intrusive. My only problem is she gave a glimpse of Paris' story and now I'm more interested in that story than Reyes( which is the third book) Although I'm not completely in love with the series I think I'll continue b/c I like the concept. These are books I'll read while waiting for books by authors I love to be released.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Cheri- I feel the same way. I kept putting both boos down and than forcing myself to finish. I think this serieshas promise and Darkest Kiss was better than the first.

message 83: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments I just finished Darkest Kiss and ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would. It started slow but got me hooked after a while. I'm really looking forward to the book about Paris. Any idea when it's coming out?

message 84: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyjcohen) | 74 comments I'm reading Linnea Sinclair's THE DOWN HOME ZOMBIE BLUES. I love Linnea's writing. We tap into the same space-faring fantasies so I always enjoy her books.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Cheri- I have a guess that Darkest Whisper will e about Paris( I'm hoping) the release date was for Nov 09 but Gena said it might be pushed up since she finished it early.

message 86: by Christal (new)

Christal | 83 comments I just finished One Foot In The Grave and Strange Candy and would recommend them both. I just started the Silver Dragons book and on a non-PNR front, am beginning The Time Traveler's Wife for a book club. Has anyone read the newest Kelley Armstrong, Personal Demon? I bought it but moved it towards the back of my shelf because the character of Hope has just never interested me. I normally love KA's book, but find myself doubting this one.

Erica - I love Aisling too. She's so funny and that Drake is so hot. I just got the first book in the Silver Dragons series but haven't started it yet. Anyone else read it?

Christal -
I loved "Playing with Fire" so much so I re-read it 3 times. I can't get enough of Gabriel!!! I can't wait for book 2 "Up In Smoke". Katie threw a bone to her minions over on her message board, saying that one of the main secondery characters was going to get snuffed. She encouraged us to dicuss which one we think might get the axe.

I'm reading Witchy Business, an anthology with stories by Julie Leto, Rhonda Nelson, and Mia Zachary.

message 89: by calicheri (new)

calicheri | 39 comments I just finished The Undead Next Door by Kerrelyn Sparks. I liked it a lot and now get to find her earlier books and read them.

message 90: by Freda (new)

Freda (arkie_fallenangel) | 9 comments Cheri and Jael - the third book in Showalter's "Darkest" series is out now.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Freda-Thanks I'm waiting for it to be shipped by DoubleDay right now.

message 92: by Allison (new)

Allison Honea-Sisson (deadxendxgrrl) | 4 comments I'm currently reading Taltos by Anne Rice. I've read almost all of her vampire books so I've switched to the witches. Honestly, I don't like them as much but I'm almost finished with the trilogy.

message 93: by LilMisGrayBrisk (last edited Jun 26, 2008 05:10AM) (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I just finished Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh. It was pretty good, though it could be a little confusing at times.

message 94: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) how's that working for ya Allison? i read 'the witching hour' several years ago, and was SO into it...right up until the last quarter or so of the book where the whole thing collapses into a huge WTF trainwreck. that ending peeved me so much i've never revisited anything in that series.

just finished Jim Butcher's latest, 'small favor'...though there's no vampires and only the teeeeeniest bit of romance in there at all.

message 95: by Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
I finished the first story in Witchy Business, snickered a bit, and had to take a break from it. It's... well, very fluffy. :D So at the moment, I'm reading The Last Camel Died At Noon by Elizabeth Peters. Love me some Egyptian mystery.

message 96: by Allison (new)

Allison Honea-Sisson (deadxendxgrrl) | 4 comments It's an okay trilogy, Michelle. I bought all three at the same time, (yay Half Price Books!) so as soon as I finished The Witching Hour, I jumped straight into Lasher. The story is mildly interesting but I really dislike the main female protagonist so its hard to read sometimes. :/

message 97: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments Anne Rice's witches series is not nearly as good as her vampire chronicles. However, the fourth book of the witches series crosses over into the vampire chronicles, and they sort of merge after that. There are a couple of merged books beginning with Merrick, so you may want to read them so you won't be confused when you hit that point in the vampire books.

message 98: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I am reading Blood Ties: The Turning by Jennifer Armintrout and I am enjoying it very much!

I tried to read Storm Front by Jim Butcher and Claimed by Shadow (the 2nd Cassandra book) by Karen Chance but Butcher's book was really dragging for me and I didn't have the patience to continue and Chance's second book is moving way too fast for me. I'll go back to them eventually but it probably won't be anytime soon.

message 99: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ranata - I felt the same way about Jim Butcher's books. I have a few anthologies with his stories in them and I haven't fallen in love with his writing.

I am reading Tiger Eye by Marjorie M. Liu. So far so good. This is the first I've read anything by her besides a short story here and there.

message 100: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I'm glad I'm not the only one who had a hard time getting into his writing.
