LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I'm currently reading Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts. It's better than Blood Brothers, but it's just OK to me. If it continues along the same vein, I doubt I will finish the trilogy.

message 802: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyjcohen) | 74 comments I've just started the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind with Wizard's First Rule. Has anyone here read this series? I got interested by watching Legend of the Seeker on TV.

message 803: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'm reading "A Fistful of Charms" and the Dark Elves series by Jet Mykles.

I keep reading that a vamp dies in the Rachel Morgan series and I'm assuming it's going to happen in this book. Since there aren't that many vamps, it's not hard to guess which one bites the dust. I'm not looking forward to that as I really like the character.

message 804: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments Lori - let me know how you like the Dark Elves series. I really liked it.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments Okay, I'm currently in the middle of Adrian Phoenix's "In the Blood". I loved "A Rush of Wings" and so far this one isn't disappointing in the least. They're great books with rich wonderful characters that you really grow attached to. I highly recommend her to anyone that hasn't already discovered Adrian and the world she's created with Heather and Dante!

message 806: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Mitabird- I thought the Circle Trilogy got better and better, and the third book was the best, so if you're like me I think you'll be glad if you stick with it. (Although, I also liked the Sign of Seven Trilogy, though not as much.)

Lori- I too am reading Fistful of Charms, and I too have read that a major character dies, but I'm pretty sure it happens at the end of the next one, For A Few Demons More. (And you're probably right about which vamp dies; I pretty much figured it out too.)

I'm taking a short romance/urban fantasy break, so I'm reading Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. Oh man, I LOVE this comic.

message 808: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Nicole, I don't know how I missed this author but she sounds great! I've added both books to my TBR shelf.

message 809: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Nichole, good to know that it doesn't happen as soon as I feared. Maybe by the end of the next book I won't mind quite so much.

message 810: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Mitabird - I'm really enjoying them. I loved her Heaven Sent series the best though. Those rockers are just too yummy for words.

Unfortunately, I couldn't finish this book. It was boring and I just didn't care about any of the characters.

message 812: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephanie_julian) | 108 comments I'm reading the Dead After Dark anthology. Just finished the Sherrilyn Kenyon story about Fury. Enjoying it so far. I like anthologies. I think sometimes writers have to work too hard to fill pages on longer books and they have to be more careful with shorter stories.

Nancy, I read six or seven books in Goodkind's series. They're not bad... as the series went on, I got progressively more and more bored, though. It seems like not a whole lot happens in each book, but it takes Goodkind a LOT of words to say that. I have some other issues with the books, too... particularly that they're rather misogynistic. I mean, Kahlan can't have an orgasm without stripping a man of all his power and will? Uh... sounds like someone's terrified of women. ;)

message 814: by ♥Tricia♥ (new)

♥Tricia♥ (siddie) | 146 comments I am actually reading a non romance *gasp!!* (which is very not like me lol).

Its called Dragon Champion by E.E. Knight

So far its VERY interesting and I find myself not wanting to put it down. Its part of the Age of Fire series so I will most likely pick up the others as well.

message 815: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 65 comments I just finished Veil of Midnight by Lara Adrian and I really liked it. Now I have to read at least one mystery for a book club then I can go back refreshed for another round of things that go bump in the night.

I really hated that she killed off who she did ( I don't want to give it away). I almost stopped reading her books. I mean how could she do that. I just hope she has something better in the wings.

Sounds pretty awful. Just like the books that claim to have strong heroines who can only feel validated when the hero is wrong. Sometimes I think they make "strong" heroines seem like an alien species. I mean, jeez, I've met strong women who don't have to assert themselves every 30 seconds. That's more common in contemporary books, I think.

Sue | 43 comments I am still reading the Accident Werewolf and I am liking it so far but it was her first book and you can tell, Accidentally Dead was better and maybe her next one will be even better

great to hear Accidentally Dead was better b/c I couldn't even finish Accidental Werewolf. the main character was a sillier version of Betsy( and that's saying something because Betsy can be quite silly)

CJ - It's only a Paper Moon (bookewyrm) | 57 comments Just read "The Unnatural Inquirer"- Simon R. Green. Read "The Ghost and the Haunted Mansion" - Alice Kimberly and now I'm taking a brief break from Paranormal and Sci-Fi/Fantasy and reading part five of Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series (historical fiction with a twist) "The Temptation of the Night Jasmine".

Hi Bonnie- have you read C.E Murphy's other series - "The Walker Papers"?

message 822: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyjcohen) | 74 comments To The Discriminating Fangirl:
Thanks for your opinion on Terry Goodkind's series. I'll see how it goes. So far the pace keeps moving on book one. As for the woman who can't have sex with a guy because her power will enslave him, that makes for a great romantic conflict. I did something similar in my paranormal romance, Moonlight Rhapsody (written as Nancy Cane). My heroine could mesmerize men with her singing voice (like a siren) but she'd lose her power if she ever slept with a man. Keeps the sexual tension flowing because they both want to do it, they both almost do it...but they can't. So will they or won't they? Will she sacrifice her power for her love? I don't know how Terry Goodkind solves this problem in his saga, but I hope to find out.

Cheryl (cheryllaflammegmailcom) | 44 comments Karen.. I agree Lora Leigh's story was very good!

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
Nancy, Kahlan's power does create some tension between her and Richard, but I never felt like her power was created for that purpose. YMMV, of course, but it just bugs me that a) the sole purpose of her power is to rob men of their free will and consciousness, and b) she'd have to give up her power if she wants to be with a man.

I write a lot of feminist criticism. Is it obvious? ;)

Ah, Lover Awakened, an absolutely brilliant book!

I'm starting Caitlin Kittredge's Pure Blood tonight. I really enjoyed the first book in the series and have heard this one is even better, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Pure Blood was really good! It was a little bit darker than the first one though. I can't wait to read the next one in the series!

message 828: by Sue (new)

Sorry -- didn't see this -- no -- I haven't. Any good?

message 830: by B (new)

B | 55 comments So I just gave Hotter After Midnight another chance. I just feel like I'm wasting my time with it...does it get better?

message 831: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments No good? Hm, maybe now that you know the characters you should just skip to the second book? LOL. To be honest, Bonnie, I didn't like the first book nearly as much as the second (I thought HaM was bland), but it does introduce you to the chars in the second. Maybe you can get along without it though. I think the author summarizes those events in book two.

Sorry you're not enjoying it though. :/

message 832: by B (new)

B | 55 comments I'll keep trying....

message 833: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments Right now I'm reading Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts.. and I'm not liking it. It's boring me.. I read her other series, The sign of Seven trilogy, and I enjoyed it.. but I can't get into this one.

message 834: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 65 comments I liked Morrigan's Cross but then I tend to like Nora Roberts books.

I just picked up Yasmine Galenorn's new book Night Huntress and just to make life interesting I also reading On the Prowl by Karen MacInerney, Working for the Devil by Lilith Saintcrow, and a mystery Vi Agra Falls by Mary Daheim. OH and I still have to finish Red.

message 835: by Jill (new)

Jill | 24 comments Jacquelyn Frank's Ecstasy. It's book 1 of her new Shadowdwellers series.

Okay -- it got better. I definitely have issues with some of the writing, though.

message 837: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) I liked Morrigan's Cross too, but I liked the other two books of the trilogy better, especially Moira and Cian's story in book 3. I guess if you didn't like the first one you won't be tempted to read the other two, but I thought they were really good. Better than the Sign of 7 trilogy, which I also really liked.

message 838: by Virginia (new)

Virginia Susan Wigg's Just Breathe.

Next up: Jessica Andersen's Dawn Keepers.

message 839: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments Bonnie, I'll be interested to hear your take on it. :)

Jess, I find Nora a little mild as far as plot, but I haven't read her JD Robb books, which I hear are different and good, LOL.

B | 55 comments new_user wrote: "Bonnie, I'll be interested to hear your take on it. :)

Have you read it new_user?

Well...I liked the story itself, and the action/descriptions/characters/writing were good. It's just the sex scenes? Some good. Some a little...I don't know. Maybe there's just no good way to write these things, but some of the word choices are just really odd/distracting to me. (For anyone who read this particular book (Hotter After Midnight) I'll just say one word...cream.)

Oddly enough, even given my struggles with it along the way, I do think I'd read another book by this author.

message 841: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments LOL, I'm the one who recommended it. ;P You mean the word choices were a little crude? Eh, I think it's better than flowery at any rate, LOL.

message 842: by B (new)

B | 55 comments Ohhhh! Sorry -- so many books, so many suggestions -- I forgot!! I don't know if it was crudeness that got me. Just odd word selections for me sometimes.

Direct and graphic is way better than flowery. :)

message 843: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephanie_julian) | 108 comments I'm just finishing up the Dead After Dark Anthology. Loved the Sherrilyn Kenyon story, same for hte JR Ward story, though I wished it didn't feel just a little rushed at the end.
Am now reading Susan Squires, an author I never read before and I'm enjoying it very much. Guess I'll have to pick up some of her other books. That's why I love anthologies.

Haven't picked this one up yet though I've read her others. I'd like to have some opinions before I get it.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments I'm finally sitting down to discover Feehan's Ghostwalker series, having started Shadow Game last night. However, I'm also getting my copy of One More Bite back today, having generously lent it out before I got a chance to read it. ;) I plan to get reacquainted with Jaz and Vayl this weekend.

Stephanie, I picked up Ecstacy, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. (Hoping I'll enjoy it a little more than her other series.)

Please let me know how you like it. With writing nad kids and life, I don't have as much time to read as I used to and I don't like to waste my time.

I loved Ecstacy and as it is the same world as her other series Gideon showed up to help.

message 850: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) I'm also really curious to know what you guys think of Ecstasy. I thought her Nightwalker series was okay... Frank's a good writer, I think. Her stories and her world are well constructed and all that. But I have two gripes with her: her books are really really saccharine; the declarations of love border on nauseating. The other is the soul mate angle. I hate the soul mate angle. Some writers can do it and make it palatable, but in Frank's books it feels kind of like "You guys are stuck together forever, whether you like it or not." And the characters say "You know, I really don't like it." And fate says "Too bad, get used to it." And then the characters spend the entire book getting used to it.

So what I'm curious to hear is if her Shadowdwellers series is the same way. If it's sickeningly sweet and heavy on the soul mate, I'll pass, but if you guys think it's a little different, I might try it.
