Sue | 43 comments Hi I am new to the group. My boyfriend and his daughter got me started in this genre with the Antia Blake and Sookie Stackhouse series. I have since moved on to other authors too. Currently I am reading "Undead and Unreturnable" by Mary Janice Davidson and "Stray" by Rachel Vincent. I love the Betsy books, they are a hoot and Stray is a new one for me, so far pretty good, it's about Werecats

message 502: by Erin (new)

Erin Quinn (erin_quinn) | 45 comments Kim, I have been out of touch all month because my day job has been keeping me on the run. I finally have some time to catch up on life and popped over here and opened the What are you reading group and you just made my whole week. I am so glad you enjoyed Echoes! Yay!!!! Thank you.

message 503: by Heather (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments Welcome Sue.... I just have to say that I love hearing that guys enjoy this genre too... especially Laurell K. Hamilton!!!!

I'm currently reading Laura Stamps' (one of our own!) The Witches of Dixie.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Welcome Sue... I love all the books you've listed Stray was very good I also like the sequel and can't wait for the next book in the series. I think you should try Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. It involves Werewolves very similar to stray.

message 505: by Nanci (new)

Nanci (bookwoman3966) | 6 comments I just finished the 4th book in the P.C. Cast House of Night series. I'm really loving it!

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
I'm taking a break from reading the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance. I need a longer narrative! So I'm reading Richelle Mead's Succubus Dreams, and I'm loving it so far.

message 507: by LilMisGrayBrisk (last edited Oct 28, 2008 05:19AM) (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I'm getting ready to start reading Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer. This is the 3rd book in her Twilight series.

ETA: I'm halfway done and while I like it, I don't find it as captivating as the first two.

message 508: by Sue (new)

Sue | 43 comments I have read bitten and will be moving on to the next one soon but I will probably start Dead witch walking next.

It is neat that my boyfriend likes this genre, he is also into Mystery & Detective novels. You should see how many books he's read!

What are the PC Cast books like? Are those the Young Adult ones?

message 509: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) The PC Cast House of Night series are young adult and they read like young adult for young adult. I've enjoyed them for quick reads, but they don't offer the intensity of the like to Twilight or Sookie...in my opinion.

An additional FYI...the House of Night books are actually co-authored with PC and her daughter Kristen.

message 510: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments I've been exploring other series while waiting for some of my favorites to come out with new books. I liked Jeanine Frosts series, and her newest comes out in December I believe. I am really enjoying the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by jr ward. And I read the first book in Jennifer Armintrout's Blood Ties series but i don't know if i will be continuing with it. It just didn't pull me in like other series I have read

message 511: by Jill (new)

Jill | 24 comments I'm reading the latest of Cast's HON series, Untamed.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Darkfever by Karen Moning

message 513: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) just finished Blood Noir and I'm already feeling the withdrawal symptoms kicking in. I can't wait for the next Anita book. I was so spoiled being able to read them back to back.

Last night I started the second book in the Dark Hunter series. I know I'm going to love this series too. I hope I can find them all. My library doesn't seem to carry very many so I'm trying to transfer them in.

message 514: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I just finished several really great books. I have been on a roll lately where everything I've read I've loved. Two young adult books I just finished were Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. Great historical fiction about New York during the American Revolution from the point of view of a young female slave. The other was Reincarnation by Suzanne Weyn. Fantastic book about a boy and a girl starting in prehistoric times who keep meeting in each new life. It was such a cool concept and well written and I highly recommend it. I also just read Darkfever and Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning. That is definitely my new favorite series. I'm currently reading Wraith by Phaedra Weldon. I picked it up to read a few pages to see if I felt like reading it next and then I realized I was already 40 pages into it and couldn't put it down. It's about a woman who can leave her body and move about in the world unseen (like a ghost basically) and she does this to eavesdrop on people for a living. While working a case, she witnesses something bad and meets someone who can do what she does and things start to change. It's one of those books that sucks you in right from the beginning and somehow you totally understand who everyone is and what their world is like without all the background info. Lots of laughs and looks like a good plot.

message 515: by Jennifer (last edited Nov 03, 2008 08:56AM) (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I just started Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews.

message 516: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments Lori - the Dark Hunter series is awesome. Enjoy!

message 517: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 49 comments I've been hooked on the new Harvest Moon game for the Wii, so I only just started reading again yesterday. I started "Marked by Moonlight." So far, it's okay. I think it's the author's first book, which I can feel a bit in the writing. But the storyline is interesting enough so far and I'm glad to be reading again!

message 518: by Unapologetic_Bookaholic (last edited Oct 31, 2008 09:43AM) (new)

Unapologetic_Bookaholic Hi: Laura welcome! I am not reading anything new. I am loving what I am reading though. I think I will (try, try, try) and continue the series of The dark One>The Untamed One is next I think. Then In the L A Banks huntress sieres after the Hunted I have 2 or 3 books in my TBR pile.

THing is I have a few of my WL books here, or on the way. That distracts me from my current reading. B/c I have been waiting for months for this books. I got Bad Blood (Crimson Moon, #2) by L. A. Banks the other day just burning a hole on my shelf lol. T/C Happy reading everyone. To those who celebrate Happy Holiday!
=)

message 519: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Laura - you have to come over to the Urban Fantasy group. We just read Darkfever as our "book of the month" book and we have a little discussion going on. Plus, several of us moved right on to reading Bloodfever so there is a little chat started about that book too. Check it out! I'm just waiting for Faefever to be returned to my library and then I'll be reading that next. It's a great series!

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Welcome Laura I'm still reading Darkfever, loving it so far. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel.

message 521: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 49 comments I finished "Marked by Moonlight" in about a day (it was a fun read). The next two books I tried have not been working out for me.

Has anyone out there read "The Accidental Demon Slayer"? I'm up to chapter 3, and I feel not only like I was dropped into the middle of the story without enough background, but that the middle of the story is a three-ring circus and I came in during the clown car act *shiver*.

Does it get better?

message 522: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'm reading The Good, The Bad, and The Undead, Kim Harrison's second book in the Hollow's series. Unfortunately, I'm still coming off the high of reading all the Anita Blake books and nothing quite compares with those. I'm not ashamed to admit and that I like sex in my books and don't think there's going to be enough in these books for me to really love them. I'm also working my way through the Dark Hunter series which I love. I'm just waiting for the books I ordered to arrive and then I'll jump back into that world.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) I'm reading Glass Houses by Rachel Caine, I can't believe I'm actually enjoyingit. I had low expectations but it's a great read so far.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic I finished The Untamed One and look forward to The Cursed One. I looked up Ronda Thompson's profile to see if there were anymore new books coming out in the series, only to find out she died.

I don't think I would enjoyed the old time feel of the world she created w/o a touch of the supernatural. Are there other series or authors similiar to how she writes? I've read the whole Wild Wulfs of London series (almost). I thought Regency was a publishing house, lol, when I heard it mentioned in threads. But I guess that's what this series is also described as. Thanks for your help!
=),
Kenjii

Read:
The Untamed One (Wild Wulfs of London #3) by Ronda Thompson

Started:
Contact by Susan Grant
Dark Embrace (Masters of Time Book 3) by Brenda Joyce
Crave the Night: I Burn for You, I Thirst for You, I Hunger for You by Susan Sizemore

message 525: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments Well, it's good to hear Marked by Moonlight isn't bad. It's on my list. Kenjii, as far as historical paranormal there's Susan Squires, Lucy Monroe, Amanda Ashley, Susan Krinard, and Teresa Medeiros too. I've been meaning to try all of them, but I've only read the last two, and I enjoyed both of them. Medeiros wrote a couple of vampire books and Krinard werewolf books. Medeiros' style is a little simpler and straightforward, but I like Krinard's uber-alphas. :D Also, Lisa Hendrix has one coming out tomorrow.

Now reading Nalini Singh's Visions of Heat, decided to give her another try. So far I'm agreeing that the second book has more romance.

message 526: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Just picked up Faefever (3rd in Moning's Fever series) and am dying to start it! I was happy to see this one is a little over 300 pages. It seems the last one was a bit short.

message 527: by traceyellen (new)

traceyellen | 27 comments Almost done with Guilty Pleasures, the first Anita Blake book--Had me sucked in from page one, but almost lost me in the middle. I think that I will end up luke warm about the fist book, but the concept has piqued my interest enough to continue. I am just not sure how I feel about Anita at this point. Kinda cool that it is set in St. Louis since that is where I live--Kinda fun when an author makes references and I actually know what it looks like....:)

message 528: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I'm getting ready to start reading Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris.

message 529: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Tracyellen, I'm a huge fan of the Anita Blake series. It is my favorite series as you can probably guess by the Anita avatar I use! When I read Guilty Pleasures, I liked it but didn't love it. As I got further and further into the series I got more and more hooked to the point that it's almost an obsession at this point LOL.

I am really passionate about these books and I will defend to the death...okay maybe not to the death...but to something really serious, the author's decision to take these books in the direction she did. I hope you will read them with an open mind and ignore a lot of the critical reviews that you're sure to come upon. Make up your own mind about the books. I love discussing them so if you have any questions or want to chat about them, let me know. I wish I was at the beginning of this series again. You have hours and hours of enjoyable reading ahead of you.

message 530: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Mitabird, the Sookie books are another one of my favorite series. They just keep getting better and better. Are you watching True Blood on HBO?

message 531: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Conflicted, DF? How so? I loved One Foot in the Grave. (Well, except I hated the very very end.) What aren't you liking about it?

message 532: by traceyellen (new)

traceyellen | 27 comments Hey Lori! I've been avoiding the Anita Blake series for so long and I'm not realy sure why. So far...humm...I have no strong emotion either way. I will say that I am very interested in Jean-Claude. Got about 40 pages left and I am at least interested to see how it wraps up.

message 533: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Nichole, I hated the very, very end of OFITG as well. I was like WTF?? It's like "they all skipped off into the sunset".

Everything else was great though!

message 534: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments Ranata and Nicole - I thought the ending of the book was a little too much to take as well. But I think that the author was just setting us up for the next book, At Grave's End. Something disastrous is probably going to start everything, and Bones and Cat will be at each others throats for half the book. haha.

I kind of like the two of them better when they are fighting with each other, and then they make up. Things get boring when everyone is happy!

message 535: by Jill (new)

Jill | 24 comments Kenyon's new One Silent Night of the DH series.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic new_user: I have read about the authors you mentioned. I will see if I have at least ONE of thier books added to my TBR pile. Thanks!
=)

message 537: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I just started Elijah, the third in Frank's Nightwalkers series. It's pretty good so far. The series seems to be picking up steam with each book. Though I still prefer a series of a slightly grittier nature.

message 538: by Sue (new)

Sue | 43 comments I just started "Marked" by PC & Kristin Cast and I am also reading "Undead & Unreturnable" Love the Betsy books!!

message 539: by Gail (new)

Gail | 110 comments Just read SWALLOWING DARKNESS, the new LKHamilton Meredith Gentry book. Twice.

I am now about 3/4 of the way through an ARC by Cat Adams (who is C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp), and a little way into Salvation in Death by JD Robb. I usually don't read more than one book at a time, but...

message 540: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments Hi Lori, I just started watching True Blood. I'm 3 episodes in and it's OK so far. However, I could not finish DUD. It was just too slow for me.

message 541: by Heather (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments I'm half-way through Swallowing Darkness by LKH..... ohhhhh, it's so good!

message 542: by Kim (new)

Kim | 57 comments Good morning! Just started Edge of Darkness by Cherry Adair last night. Wouldn't you know it's Book 3?! Now, I have to buy 1 & 2 this weekend... lol

Happy Friday, everyone!

message 543: by Jess (new)

Jess | 173 comments I am starting the second book in Jennifer Armintrout's series, possession. I don't really know why I'm even reading this book to be honest. I thought the first book was okay, maybe this one will be better? lol.

message 544: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everyone... newbie to the group! I came across the group as I was looking up Larell K Hamilton's books to add to my read list, and I am so excited to have found all of these great suggestions. Hamilton's books are my first forage into the paranormal romance world... but I'M HOOKED!

Right now I'm a little over half way through Swallowing Darkness, and it's AWESOME! This is so far my favorite of this series.

message 545: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'm reading the third Rachel Morgan book Every Which Way But Dead. I like this series but it's really more urban fantasy then romance. I prefer more sex and romance in my books but I am enjoying the stories and I keep hoping that Rachel will get it on with yummy vamp Kisten.

message 546: by Amie (new)

Amie (amiestuart) | 44 comments Kim I HATE when that happens!

I'm not reading anything right now--though I've got plenty to choose from!

Jess,

I'm with you on the Jennifer Armintrout series. I read the first one, it was okay. Started the second one, and gave up. Didn't even finish it. Returned all three to the library, without reading the third installment.

Some people say it gets better and the 2nd book is the weakest of the series. Maybe next time, i'll give it another try.

message 548: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Walker (wykedgoddess05) | 10 comments Just finnished " Living with the dead" Women of the underworld series by kelley Armstrong ...

message 549: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (slpsharon) | 12 comments Good morning.

I'm just starting Laurel Hamilton's Bloody Bones.
She's going to raise an entire graveyard full of people in this one. Should be exciting.

message 550: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (slpsharon) | 12 comments Not sure, but I think Anita and Jean Claude first got together in 'Circus of the Dammed'. She had to free him from his master of the city in it.
