MIDWAY CHALLENGE 50.1 - GO FOR THE GOLD
Bobsled? REALLY? ;)If I like Once Upon a Marigold, I'll probably read Twice Upon a Marigold for this task... Not sure about part 2! (Is that cool?)
Okay, I'll bite: does the sport have to be in the title of the book? or does the sport itself have to feature in the book?
Oh fun! But I will definitely need suggestions.I am assuming that for "ice hockey", just having "ice" in the title isn't enough?
Well, for skiing we can look under Donna Jo's task help topic for suggestions:The boys of winter : life and death in the U.S. ski troops during the Second World War Sanders, Charles J. 940.544
Climb to conquer : the untold story of World War II's 10th Mountain Division ski troops Shelton, Peter 94.5412
Ski Weekend Stine, R. L. YA Horror
The Way to Ski: The official Method Campbell, Stu 796.93
Skiing the Best: A Guide to the top 50 ski areas in the U.S. and Canada Jaffe, Miles 796.9
White Heat: The extreme skiing life Johnson, Wayne 796.93
The Boy who Invented skiing Wolfe, Swain Biography
This sounds good for ice hockey:Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts

3 stars -- "sad": yes; "funny": no
Good for insights into post-communist Hungary.
Is part B limited to just the winter sports mentioned or can it include any event in the Winter Olympics? I ask because there is an event called Skeleton which obviously opens up the acceptable books quite a bit. Thanks.

This is a great suggestion, the reviews are excellent...I've made my choice :)

Marigold will be okay for the word 'Gold'?
Sara ♥ wrote: "I don't know... that's my question, too..."Ah, gotcha. Missed the '(Is that cool?)' sentence at the end of the post. :-)
Would Murder on Ice
the book cover says it is a figure skating mystery or
Nice Shows: A Berrien Gamble Ice Skating Mystery be OK?
The Silver Pigs and
Shadows in Bronze byLindsey Davis are books #1 and 2 in her Marcus Didius Falco mystery/historical fiction series set in ancient Rome. Poseidon's Gold is book #5 in the series. I've really enjoyed these books and would recommend them if you haven't read them yet. Plus I think that Donna Jo mentioned in another Help thread that they also work for the task 25.9 since they have a list of characters at the beginning of each book.
I thought that this series was funny, engaging and historically accurate. I must get back and finish the series since she's written more books after I got it all caught up the first time.
For mystery lovers and those with an interest in Appalachia, I'd recommend:
The Ballad of Frankie Silver by Sharyn McCrumb. I think I am good for part A; but my library seems to be pretty weak in sports titles, so part B could be tough for me! time to check the swap lists...

I agree -- great book!
i'd like to read The Bronze Pen and Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts. do those sound okay?
OK The ??? has been asked on here at least 2 times and no response::Does the sport name have to be in the title or can it be a book about the sport (Fiction)??
Can I use a nonfiction book since we just got back from Ruidoso, NM and I read Skiing for Dummies on the way there???
Just as a heads up. I discovered Holy sex! : a Catholic guide to toe-curling, mind-blowing, infallible loving by Popcak, Gregory K.I won't be using it, but...
It is a legitimate book--and with Curling as a winter sport, how could you resist.
Oh, wow. I think that beats The Ski Mask Way, which, btw, is checked out from the library right now! I was GOING to pick it up, but I couldn't...
I think you get double points if you read both Holy Sex! AND The Ski Mask Way in the same challenge. (but check with Cynthia)
Hahaha... I HAVE to read The Ski Mask Way now, because I have to read a "ski" book for this AND the other challenge, and I only have one back-up book...
Roseann left this post in the Completed Tasks thread:"Sorry about not answering your question--the name of the sport should be in the title for everyone else.
I am starting my online classes, so I will only be stopping by every few days or so--if you have a question feel free to send me a message and I will post the answer in this section."

Any winter sport is fine
Rebecca wrote: "What about Double Black? My library has it listed as Double Black: A Ski Diva Mystery? Thanks!"
That's fine
Melissa wrote: "Okay, I'll bite: does the sport have to be in the title of the book? or does the sport itself have to feature in the book? "
Sport needs to be in the title.
Ashley wrote: "Oh fun! But I will definitely need suggestions.

No it should have both words.
I just emailed Roseann and she has approved "hockey" without needing it to be ice hockey. She says hockey is just fine by her.
Before I get too far into the book, can I use Curled as a form of Curling? or does the book have to be about the sport as well as having the word in the title?
Here's a list of the 15 types of sporting events that will be held at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games:Alpine skiing
Biathlon
Bobsleigh
Cross-country skiing
Curling
Figure skating
Freestyle skiing
Ice hockey
Luge
Nordic combined
Short track speed skating
Skeleton
Ski jumping
Snowboarding
Speed skating
I thought it might help to have the whole list shown.
So if the word 'skeleton' is in the book title, the book doesn't have to be about the sport of skeleton. Correct? Conversely, if the book is about the sport of skeleton, it doesn't have to have the word 'skeleton' in the title. (Again, correct?)
The Olympics start on Friday 2/12/10. I'd better hurry and get more books read before then. I'm a bit of an Olympics nut and will be watching more of that and focusing less on the reading one the games begin.

Yes to part one - no to part two - it needs to have the word in the title.
Donna Jo wrote: "Before I get too far into the book, can I use Curled as a form of Curling? or does the book have to be about the sport as well as having the word in the title?"
Curled is fine
Jayme wrote: "I found a book called Overboard about snowboarding. Can I use that? "I don't think so. Cynthia said no to this question I posed:
"Conversely, if the book is about the sport of skeleton, it doesn't have to have the word 'skeleton' in the title. (Again, correct?)
Cyntia's answer: ...No, it needs to have the word in the title."
(Standard disclaimer -- I'm NOT Cynthia, or Roseann. They are the final artibter's of this question. I'm just chiming in with my understanding of the task.)
Jayme wrote: "I found a book called Overboard about snowboarding. Can I use that? "If it doesn't have the word Snowboarding in the title no.

In anticipation of the Olympic games, read one book with either GOLD, SILVER, or BRONZE in the title then read one book with a sport in the Winter Olympics: BIATHLON, SKATING, SKIING, LUGE, ICE HOCKEY, CURLING, BOBSLED. Note: Any form of the sport words: skate, skating, skates, etc. and variations on the medals: golden, bronzed, etc. are fine.
