Sara ♥ (saranicole) Errr... that's a bit generous! I believe Lyn came up with the original idea... I just adapted it...

Tani | 137 comments I'm totally up for another round, and I'm looking forward trying out the new rules. Lyn, could you send me the spreadsheet as well? My email address is anbakoori@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Angela | 1934 comments Sara I thought it was an excellent idea, so thanks to Lyn for thinking it up and you adapting it!

message 54: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Lyn's suggested:
*At the end post the book that 'touched' the most shelves for you.
Edited to the rules section...

message 55: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments This is going to mean more keeping a better track of books read, shelves touched once, shelves touched more than one, and pages read and shelves eliminated. Hope this is not making it more complicated, just more fun!!

Rebecca (rebeccama) | 0 comments I'd like to join in too if it's not too late! If you could just point me in the direction of the directions of exactly how this works (and also explain how the , that would be great! I've taken a look at the challenges in the past, but I just want to make sure that I understand the rules and how everything works! Thanks!

Susanna (jb_slasher) Hey Lyn, could you send the spreadsheet as well, please? susie_everton@hotmail.com Thanks! :)

message 59: by Foxy Grandma (new)

Foxy Grandma (foxygrandma) I started this in the first one, and "life" interrupted this one and the seasonal challenge. But I think things have calmed down enough to try again. So count me in. Also Lyn, can you send your spreadsheet, (lioness828@charter.net) I know I took it and morphed it to fit me last time, but I can't find it now. Thanks Lyn

I am also looking forward to reading the thread to find books, I am very comptetitive, but I also like hearing what other people read and enjoyed or didn't enjoy. How else do we discover new books and authors?

And thanks to Angela for doing this and keeping track of everybody.

Angela | 1934 comments Rebecca the directions are on the previous page of this thread. If after you read them and are still confused let me know and be specific so I can answer your questions directly. Thanks :)

Chriz - I tried to send you the spreadsheets, but it says the transmission was rejected by the recipient's domain.

Mmmmm - maybe could you try my yahoo-mail? peanut71102@yahoo.com - thank you and sorry for the trouble :)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I think that one worked CHriz. Let me know.

message 64: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 425 comments I've been thinking about what books I have to finish for the Seasonal Challenge and was looking at the reviews and just saw something that triggered two questions.

1. At what point should you check to see what shelves the book is on - before or after you add it to your own ‘read” list and shelves?

2. What about a bonus cross off category for a book that isn't on any shelves?

The reason I ask these questions is one of my books has no ratings and is not on any shelves and this isn't the first time this has happened to me. If I add it to my shelves, obviously it would then be placed on those shelves but as of right now, there are no reviews and as it’s an older book, I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden rush to read it!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Good questions Rebecca - The rule for checking to see what shelves a book is on is that you can't count the shelves until you finish the book. The reason for this is that the shelves may change (I have had that happen to me, but not very often).

As for not hitting any shelves, that is quite a feat. If it just hits no "new" shelves (i.e. it is not the first book that you read), you just don't count it. If it doesn't hit any shelves out of 350, or any at all - I can see that happening with either a brand new book, or a book that is really unique.

What say you guys to that? Angela?

message 66: by Kim (new)

Kim I received the spread sheet, thanks Lyn! How many books can you use the spreadsheet to keep track of? What do you do if you read more books than there is space for?

message 67: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I personally do not look to see what books are going to touch shelves, but I think you can do that if you wanted to, you just cannot count the shelves until the book is finished. I have had numerous books not hit any shelves at all because it may be a new book. Although, I have read books that do not touch any new shelves, but now that we are trying to see how many times we can touch a shelf, it may be more interesting. I am not sure if I am understanding the question correctly.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Kim L wrote: "I received the spread sheet, thanks Lyn! How many books can you use the spreadsheet to keep track of? What do you do if you read more books than there is space for?"

I just re-sent the first two spreadsheets, updated for 50 books. The third already allows that many.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) So - I was thinking about Rebecca's question, and I came up with this change. How about at the end we report both the book that hit the MOST shelves AND the book that hit the LEAST shelves. That is where you would post your book that hit NO shelves.

message 70: by Kim (new)

Kim Thanks, Lyn!!! 50 books should be plenty.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Cool, Don't know what I was thinking, 23 would never be enough!

message 72: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Heehee... My spreadsheet holds 100 books... (I made it bigger...) I just finished book 48... I may just hit 50 before Sunday night. You never know...

message 73: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 425 comments I typically don't check the books I am reading shelf-wise but I am about 50 pages into this one book for the seasonal challenge and I'm struggling with it and was wondering if there were any reviews to see what other people thought about it. That is when I noticed that this book, published in 1996 and is the first of a tilogy had no ratings, no reviews, and was not listed on any shelves at all (although the other 2 did.) I hadn't thought about this before but when I complete any book, I would typcially put it on my shelves - in this case 2010, read, and own and then see what the top 100 shelves are. My question is, at what point do people typically go through the shelf list (before or after adding it to their own list). Does that make more sense?

message 74: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I usually go through the shelves after I've rated, reviewed, and shelved a book. I don't know if this is what others do... I wish we had a 2010 shelf this time! I've had a bunch of those since the new year started!

message 75: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 425 comments Sara ♥ wrote: "I usually go through the shelves after I've rated, reviewed, and shelved a book...."

Not like I would do it, but by going though the shelves after you've rated, reviewed and shelved a book, as I usually do, you can sway the results. It's all the honest system anyway but seeing this made me realize just how easily it could be to knock out those darn shelves I never seem to hit. There was that conversation about books being placed on unusual/unexpected shelves.

It's not a big deal - I was just wondering when everyone one else went through the shelves.

The one you sent me allows 80, I think, but I was just saying that it did not need to be updated. I know, you are a reading fanatic!!

Foxy Grandma (foxygrandma) Good Reading everyone.......

message 86: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Just out of curiosity, how does everyone mark off shelves on the spreadsheet? I've been going through the first 5 pages of shelves for the book(s) that I read, and cutting and pasting them into a column on the sheet. Then I alphabetize them (using Excel's little A-Z button) and go down the list and mark the ones that match. But I keep thinking there has to be an easier way! Anyone have a better way to do it?

message 87: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Are you using THE spreadsheet? For that one, the shelves are all on one side, alphabetized, then you type the book title, etc. in one of the columns at the top, then you can just put a 1 (or some other number) in that column in the rows corresponding to the shelves on the first 5 pages... If that makes sense....

message 88: by Andreea (new)

Andreea (andyyy) | 117 comments For books with over 400 pages, could I decide what shelves to cross off later on? I'm not sure what kind of books I'll read in the future, so I'd want to save up the bonus for the end of the challenge.

message 89: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Andreea, it has to be decided right away. That is challenging part.
