Angela | 1934 comments Who's in??? :)
Does anyone have any ideas to make it more interesting or different?
I was thinking maybe we can also figure out how many times we touch one shelf too. I know there are some shelf I might have touched almost everytime it would I picked up a book. We can post our most touched shelf at the end of the challenge. Any other ideas??

message 2: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm in... Ways to change it up.... I don't know... I'll think about it and get back to you!

message 3: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) I'm in :)

message 4: by Kim (new)

Kim I want to do it! I was doing the last one until I lost my excel file halfway through the challenge and I was NOT going to go back and spend hours redoing my shelves, LOL!

message 5: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments I would like to try round 3, I had to bow out of round one due to work, and didn't do number 2 for the same reason. Now that I'm finally caught up with things, I am reading again!

I agree with the most touched shelves concepts - perhaps it could be a side goal, such as trying to touch 5 different shelves 10 or 15 times or something like that.

message 6: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 425 comments Count me in. I think keeping track of the most touched shelves is interesting and would be a way to change it up a little.

message 7: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 155 comments I'm in. I also like the idea of how many times you touch a shelf.

message 8: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (last edited Jan 19, 2010 05:06PM) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I might do it again. I like the reporting of how many times you hit a shelf.

Another thing I thought of, in the original, if you didn't want to read a shelf at all, you could read an extra group read to make up for it. How about, for every book you read that is over say 450 pages, you get to check off one extra shelf of your choice? Or some page level that we agree on.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) OOh - Heres another one. How about another side goal to see what book you have that touches the most shelves.

message 10: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Oh, that's a good one! Good idea! I have one this time that hit 74 shelves!

message 11: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) Nice, I like all these ideas!

I have an idea, but it might violate the spirit of the challenge. Feel free to shoot me down, I can take it.

I've been wishing the challenge were a bit more collaborative. It would be fun to have discussions & recommendations thread. Here's an example: I could post that I'm desperate to get these shelves: glbt, graphic-novel, queer, nonfiction, etc. Someone might then respond that Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic would fit most of those shelves.

I've been highly amused at some of the shelf combinations for a single book and would love to discuss/suggest them. Of course, this would break the competition & secrecy aspect of the challenge. OTOH, as it stands now, you could just go to my profile page if you were curious.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I would be okay with Cindy's suggestion. It makes it less of a competition, and more of a personal challenge, which is alright with me. What say the rest of you?

message 13: by Sara ♥ (last edited Jan 19, 2010 06:55PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) For me, it's pretty much already a personal challenge. I don't look at the leaderboard and go, "Oh crap! So-and-so is beating me!" For me, it's more like, "Hmmm... I really should branch out to different genres and stop reading books that only hit the young-adult and romance shelves..."

We could make the discussion a separate thread so that people who like the secrecy could keep it that way... I don't know if they would feel like we were cheating... Though it's not like there's a cash prize or something...

Oh, and recommendations for how to hit the "erotica" shelf without actually having to read erotica... that'd be helpful... :) I finally hit it on accident...

message 14: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) Totally agree with you guys about this being more of a personal challenge. I was surprised how fast this turned into a personal challenge. I think as a group we must read at very, very different speeds. There isn't much chance for me to ever compete with those top spots!

Oooh, and if we collaborate, someone who is really into, say, sci-fi or romance might be able to give suggestions to people who don't normally read that genre. It's been fascinating branching out from my usual fare, but I frequently feel like I'm randomly flailing around.

message 15: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (last edited Jan 19, 2010 10:06PM) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) My sentiments exactly Sara - a separate discussion for those of us who are just trying to "hit the shelves", not beat anyone. Great suggestion Cindy. As to how to report, in another group we had a challenge where people had to pick a book off of a shelf based on the last book they read. Anyway, the important thing is, each participant set up a log where we reported was the Title, Author, shelf, and our star rating for each book we read. That way people could look at our log and try to decide whether they wanted to read the book or not.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Sara - I have been avoiding that shelf for a few times!!

message 17: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) I'd like to play again this time. I fizzled out on the last couple of rounds, but I've always thought this is a fun challenge. I'm with Sara in that it's more of a personal challenge for me -- I just like to see how many shelves I can hit and if I can branch out a little with what I'm reading, so any changes to the rules work for me.

message 18: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Lyn M wrote: "Sara - I have been avoiding that shelf for a few times!!"

Exactly! I mean, I love tamer romance novels, but I'm NOT going to read erotica... that's just a bit too much for me.

message 19: by Angela (last edited Jan 20, 2010 01:28PM) (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I think the idea of a another thread to list books that hit certain shelves is a great idea, especially those who would like to see if they hit one accidentally. I personally do not try to find books just to hit shelves and love when I do hit a hard one.
I also think that we can find a way to knock off certain shelves that we know as readers (for me graphic books) are not going to hit unless on accident. Maybe for every shelf you hit 10 times, you knock off a shelf of your choice, but once you cross it off, you can't change your mind later if you do hit it. Therefore, this shelf is off limits for additonal hits. Does that make sense?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) It makes sense to me, Angela. I actually have three shelves this time around that I have hit with EVERY book I've read. So that means I would be able to cross of three additional shelves.

That's a cool idea. But just as a warning... During this challenge, there are 49 books I've hit 10 or more times... so that might start getting a little crazy...

m-m?? That's gonna be fun...

message 23: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Sara do you think we should do a book that someone has read that has a lot of pages as Lyn suggested instead...might be more difficult. Maybe any book with 400-450 pages??

message 24: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (last edited Jan 20, 2010 06:22PM) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Sara - That's just cuz you read too many books, lol. I could go either way, the shelves hit a lot, or the size of the book.

P.S. Currently updating the spreadsheet if anyone wants it.

message 25: by Sara ♥ (last edited Jan 20, 2010 06:25PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm definitely not OPPOSED to the hitting-a-book-10-times idea, but for those of us who read quite a lot, it might get a little... crazy... If it were over 20 hits, I'd only have 11 shelves, but that might be more books than some people read the whole challenge, so...

On the other hand I, personally, don't read TOO many books over about 350 or 375 pages, so I think 400 would be a good cutoff. If we wanted even MORE incentive, we could have, say 3 tiers... like:

* Over 400 pages - Mark off 1 extra shelf of your choice
* Over 700 pages - Mark off 2 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 1000 pages - Mark off 3 extra shelves of your choice

I REALLY don't read many books that are THAT long, although I went through the Inkheart series LAST shelf challenge, but for those of you who DO read super-long books, who can't get through as many as those of us reading 150-page YA books... *looks around innocently* ... that might start the level the playing field after a while.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Lyn M wrote: "Sara - That's just cuz you read too many books, lol."

Psshhh... There's no such thing! ;)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) True, true. Never too many books.

Laura (lkubed) I'm in :0)

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I like the tier idea as well!! Maybe we can find a way to include both in the challenge. (the shelves thing and the book thing)...

message 30: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments At least updating the spreadsheet should be easier since I kept track of the shelves that were added and taken away. Thanks for doing this Lyn!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) It is done, I think.

BTW - I like Sara's tier idea, also.

Does anyone know when we are starting?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) February 1st - April 30.

message 44: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette I think I need a little more instruction but I don't want to hold up the thread - could someone just point me to the original post maybe? It sounds very interesting (and challenging) since I tend to keep to the same shelves most of the time.

I want in too. :D I need something to motivate me into reading more than usual this spring.

message 46: by Angela (last edited Jan 26, 2010 05:51PM) (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Object of the Game: To have read off the most shelves from the official list below.

Start: February 1, 2010
*Any book that you finish after this date can be used for this challenge.
End: April 30, 2010

1. To have read a book off a shelf, you must read a book that is found on that particular shelf. ie. to have read book off the classics shelf, you must read a book that is found on "classics" shelf within the first five pages.
Here is how you find the pages:
-Find the book you just read and click on it so you get to the orginal page. For example: Grapes of Wrath http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43...
-After you get to this page, look all the way to the right hand side and find Popular Shelves, click on more shelves and you should get to this page: http://www.goodreads.com/book/shelves...

and cross off the shelves you 'touched' on the first 5 pages.

2. A single book may be found on several shelves however we will only count the first 5 pages of top shelves for this book. For example, you may find a book that has 148+ pages of shelves (such as Grapes of Wrath), but only count the first 5 pages.

3. You don’t have to read off the shelves in any particular order of shelves.

4. The name of shelves must MATCH EXACTLY to the shelf you are trying to count. No deviations are acceptable (check the spelling off the official list below). For example one shelf reads: 2008-books and another 2008-book or childrens or children-s.

5. It is permissible to read a book that is found on a shelf you've already counted. I may read 10 books that include the shelf "books-i-own". After you have found this shelf once, continue to check off the same shelf, but do not count it as an additonal shelf. At the end of the round, report the shelf you hit the most.

6. Reporting

All we want you to report on the thread is the number of books you've read and the number of shelves these books are found on. Do not report titles because that will give your competitors a strategic edge. I will be creating a another thread where people can post questions on where to find a shelf. So if someone is looking specifically for economics, they can ask other players where they found that shelf. Some of us would like to keep this a secret, as it may give the competitors who are trying to get the most shelves more of an advantage.

For example:
52 shelves
2 books

b. You must track the titles read and the shelves on your own. You can come up with your own method of tracking. I personally print the list and highlight the shelves I have hit, but Lyn had made a excel spreadsheet, which she will email you if requested.

7.NEW TWIST
If you read a book with a certain amount of pages, you can cross off a shelf you are finding difficult to hit. If you cross off a shelf and later hit it, you cannot change your original shelf. You must choose another shelf to cross off.
* 400 pages - Mark off 1 extra shelf of your choice
* Over 500 pages - Mark off 2 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 600 pages - Mark off 3 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 700-1000 and over pages - Mark off 4 extra shelves of your choice
(Please include this in your reporting)
For example:
216 shelves
23 books
Book over 400 pages crossed off so and so shelf.

8. Winning
The winner is one who has either read off all 350 shelves noted on the official list or who has read the most off these 350 shelves by the end date, April 30, 2010.
*Also, please post the shelf you 'touched' the most at the end of the challenge.
*At the end post the book that 'touched' the most shelves for you.

If you read a book with a certain amount of pages, you can cross off a shelf you are finding difficult to hit. If you cross off a shelf and later hit it, you cannot change your original shelf. You must choose another shelf to cross off.
* Over 400 pages - Mark off 1 extra shelf of your choice
* Over 500 pages - Mark off 2 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 600 pages - Mark off 3 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 601-1000 and over pages - Mark off 4 extra shelves of your choice "

Sorry to be picky, but the 601-1000+... should that maybe be 700-1000+? As is, it doesn't make sense to have an over 600 and an over 601...

Also, just for clarification, does a book with 400 pages (even) get an extra shelf, or is it 401 and more?

Kim I am excited about the new twist! There are some shelves that I know I won't hit.
