The quote “In a dark time, the eye begins to see…” by Theodore Roethke generally, means that when you struggle in hard times, for instance, if you find your self in a situation where no one is there to support you, that’s when your self generates to see that you need to find a solution. I am agreeing with this quote because in Impulse by Ellen Hopkins, one of the main character Christina pass through dark times, generating to see that she’s not being who she really is; addicted to sex, drugs, and becomes desensitized by letting her boyfriend hit her whenever he desires. In contrasts, to Christina’s dark times, in The Narrative of Frederick Douglass By Frederick Douglass, the dark times he pass through by being an slave thinking that he will never be free, nor feel like a human, made him to open his eyes, and commence to see that he is a human and he can be free. Both literatures embodies Theodore Roethke’s quote, were each character feels clouded because of what they going through. They are feeling that their lives is sunless , with lack of light, however, that’s where their ideas, and actions become functional, and they began to see.
In Impulse, Christian has a perfect life while being a junior in school. However her life changed dramatically, and she wanted to commit suicide after meeting the love of her life. This is when her dark times countdown. Consequently, she had two babies, which made her not even apply to college. Furthermore she became addicted to heroin, cocaine, and crystal meth. Christina’s dark time was result of her boyfriend who was addicted to all those drugs. She clearly was going through a lot bad things because her boyfriend used to hit her. However, being desensitized made her realize the life she was having, perhaps wasn’t the life she desire. Therefore, she started to change her addictions to all those drugs, and went to live with her mother. The dark times dawn and her eyes begin to see what’s best for her. In The Narrative of Frederick Douglass, the main character Frederick Douglass was being dehumanize, furthermore, desensitized by all the whips not only the physical ones, but the mental ones, which made him to open his eyes wider, generates to see he had a chance to modify his life. The ignorance of being in the dark as slave……
